Description
I. THOMPSON.
Detaching Horses.
Patented March 3,1874.
m r/ [ll 11/412 [01 A ems/2' UNITED STATES ISAAC THOMPSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DETACHING HORSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,152, dated March 3, 1874; application filed January 7, 1874. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC THOMPSON, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Devices for Preventing Horses from Running Away, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to a device in the form of a winch attached to the rear axle of a carriage, and carrying two wires or cords leadin g to the bit-rings, and so arranged as to be wound upon said drum through spur-gears upon the hind wheels meshing with pinions upon said drum, and thus draw back the horses head with much greater force than can be exerted upon the driving-reins. The invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the said drum, cords, and gears, and the devices for. throwing the pin ions in and out of gear.
Figure l is an enlarged longitudinal vertical section of the device for throwing the pinions in and out of gear. Fig. 2 is 'a perspective view of the running-gear of a carriage fitted with my device.
In the drawing, A represents the rear axle of a vehicle, connected by a forked reach, B, with the fore axle 0. Dis a three-sided frame, secured underneath the reach and axle, the open ends projecting to the rear of the said axle. At each end is a short standard, in which the winch E is journaled. At each end of said drum is a pinion, a, and on the inner end of eachhub of a hind wheel is a spurgear, I). The frame D is not rigidly secured to the axle and reach, but slides in stirrups pendent therefrom. To the front end of said frame is attached a toothed rack, c, with which engages a geared segment, d, secured to a shaft, 0, transversely journaled in the reach, and having at one end a lever, j, which projects up through a slot in the bed of the carriage. F F are wires or cords, securedat one end to the winch, the other ends being led and secured to the rings of the bit in the horses mouth.
When the horse attempts to run away, the driver may throw forward the lever f, to bring the pinions into gear withthe spur-wheels, which thus set the winch in mot-ion, winding upon the wires or cords F, which forcibly draw back the horses head until he is compelled to come to a standstill.
' If desired, the drum-shaft may be provided with ratchets, and the ends of the drum with spring-pawls, as shown, whereby the winch will not be unwound, to loosen the cords, it the horse backs up the vehicle.
I am aware-that a winch has been used in connection with the back axle for the same purpose that I use my improvement, and I therefore disclaim the invention, broadly, of a winch adapted for the purpose named; but
WVhat I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'The combination, with the rear axle and reach B, of the frame 1), sliding underneath the reach, winch E, provided with cogs, which mesh with spur-gears on both wheels, toothed rack c, and segment cl, secured to a shaft, 0, all constructed to operate substantially as described.
ISAAC THOMPSON.
