CONDENSING INSTALLATION FOB. LOCOMOTIVES.
Application filed November 3, 1923. Serial No. 672,575.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EUGENE SCHNEIDER, resident of Paris, France, have invented new and useful Improvements in Condensing Installations for Locomotives, which is fully set forth in the following specification.
In the installation of a surface condenser on a turbine locomotive many difficulties are met with. V
In order to obtain a good vacuum, it is necessary that the condenser should be placed at the outlet of the driving turbine; it is necessary that the condenser should permit a proper entry of the exhaust steam and that it should presentto the steam, at the time of entry, a sufficiently expansive tu bular surface to obtain good condensation.
It is also necessary that the condenser should be very easily accessible in all its parts without it being necessary, in order to reach it, to proceed to dismantle any important piece, such as the boiler, smoke box, etc.
It is further necessary, when the condenser is placed between the smoke box and the neighbouring extremity of the vehicle, that it should not prevent the replacement of the burnt fire tubes or of the elements of the superheater.
Finally, as the weight which it is permissi ble to place on each axle has, generally, a strictly limited value, it is seen that the construction and the installation of the condenser are two, problems which are closely interconnected.
These problems are completely solved by the present invention.
The invention will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating one embodiment of the present invention wherein the forward portion of a locomotive is shown in side elevation, the fire-box and the condenser casing being in section.
Referring to the drawings the surface condenser A is placed between the smoke box and the neighbouring extremity of the vehicle, and further is formed in such a way that its upper surface is entirely situated below the plane of the lowest fire tube of the boiler. For this purpose, the condenser is greatly increased in length and has only a small height, further the tubes of the condenser are located transversely with reference to the longitudinal axis of the locomot1ve.
The flattened form assumed by the condenser may comprise a rectangular, oval or any other section. The location of the condenser below the tubes of the boiler permits of easy dismantling of the tubular bundle of the boiler without it being necessary to remove the condenser. On the other hand, the form of the condenser assures to the steam a large surface of first contact. The transverse arrangement of the tubes of the condenser permits of making the condenser accessible from the longitudinal sides of the locomotive. I
The location of the condenser between the extremity of the locomotive and the turbine permits it to be brought close to the latter, the steam being thus delivered to the condenser through the shortest path. As shown on the drawing, the various apparatuses, starting from the extremity of the vehicle, will receive the positions indicated:
The condenser A is positioned adjacent the forward end of the locomotive and near the driving turbine B. The speed reducing gear C has driving connection with turbine B as shown. One of the covers D for the condenser A is shown broken away to expose condenser tubes E.
I claim- 1. A condensing installation for a loco motive having fire-tubes and a smoke-box comprising a condenser casing positioned on said locomotive between the smoke-box and the adjacent end of said locomotive, the up per surface of said casing being below said fire-tubes to permit ready access to the latter, and a bundle of condenser tubes in said casing, said tubes being so arranged within the casing as to be accessible from both sides of the locomotive. V
2. A surface condensing installation for a turbine driven locomotive comprising, in combination with a turbine and a speed-reducing gear, a condenser casing positioned on said locomotive between the smoke-box and the neighboring extremity of said locomotive, the upper surface of said casing being below the lowest fire-tube of said loco motive and adjacent the turbine outlet, and a transverse bundle of tubes in said casing.
3. A surface condensing installation for a locomotive, comprising a condenser casing of extended length and reduced height positioned between the smoke-box and the adj acent extremity of the latter the upper surface o'fsaid casing being below the lowest fire tube of the locomotive covers for said casing, and a transverse bundle of tubes in said casing said bundle of tubes being rendered accessible from the two longitudinal sides of the locomotive by the removal of said covers.
4. A condensing installation for a 1000- motive having a smoke-box at one end of the boiler casing, said condensing installation comprising a condenser casing of extended length lying transverse of the locomotive between the smoke-box and the adjacent end of the locomotive and below the smoke-box, said condenser casing having condenser tubes therein extending transversely of the locomotive, and removable end plates to enable the condenser tubes to be readily removed.
5. A condensing installation for a turbine driven locomotive having a smoke-box at one end of the boiler casing, and a turbine outlet at a point adjacent the smoke-box, said condensing installation comprising a condenser casing lying adjacent to and below the smoke-box and also adjacent. the turbine outlet, said condenser casing being provided with tubes extending transversely oi the 10- comotive, and removable end plates to permit ready access to said tubes.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification.
