Be it known that I, JAiuns S. CLAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Retaining Members, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to post retaining members and is designed primarily for use in connection with that class of post constructions shown in my co-pending application, Serial No. 506,183, filed Gctober 7, 1921. The prime feature of the present invention is to provide means for retaining the post in substantially upright position should the post he delivered a blow sufiicient to break it loose from its anchoring means thereby preventing the breakage of the globe or other parts connected with the post, and also eliminating any possibility of the post striking a pavement with sufiicient force to break the same, and also prevent the post striking pedestrians.
A further feature of the invention is the provision of anchoring means in the base block for supporting the retaining member, such supporting means being so constructed that the retaining member. may be readily entered therein. 7
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter more fully set forth and pointed out in the accompanying specification.

The figure represents a lamp post and parts of its anchoring base, parts of the post being shown in section, and the retaining member positioned therein.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates the post which is preferably hollow and formed of metal, the base of the post being anchored to a supporting block 2 by means of clips 3 and bolts 4, the head ends of the bolts tended through the clips so as to bind the clips on the rib 5 at the bottom of the post.
The clips 3 are of such fragile nature that a blow delivered to the post will snap the clips in two and thereby protect the post against breakage from the blow delivered, but under. ordinary circumstances the post, when released from its anchoring means would fall over and not only break the globe, but under extreme circumstances being anchored in the block and exmight break the post or strike and injure pedestrians. To obviate these objectionable features, a retaining member 6 is extended part way through the post and the lower end thereof is entered in a socket 7 embedded in the block 2, the retaining member having a more or less loose fit in the socket. in applying the post and retaining member to use, the retaining member is placed within the post and the post then set in an upright position over the block andthe clips applied to use to hold the post in upright position, this being accomplished by providing an opening 8 in the base portion of the post. After the post has been properly anchored the lower end of the retaining member is brought into registration with the socket 7 and then lowered into the socket, thus completing the erection of the post. After this operation is completed the cover plate 9 is fastened over the opening 8, thus completely enclosing the anchoring parts and the retaining member. By providing the socket in the supporting block for the post and entering the retaining member therein, after the post is placed in position, the necessity of lifting the post over the top of the retaining member is obviated and rendering it comparatively an easy matter to set up the post.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by'Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with a hollow post and means for anchoring the same in an upright position, of a retaining member within said post, means for supporting the retaining member said retaining member holding said post in substantially upright position only upon fracture of said anchoring means for the post, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a hollow post, a;
supporting block, and means for anchoring the post to said block, of a retaining member extending into said post, and a socket embedded in the supporting block for anchoring the lower end of the member.
