ting die. This invention has for its object to provide a simple, reliable automatic ma chine the main parts of which may he either pressed, stamped or drawn from sheet iron thereby permitting the machine to he inanu'lactured in large quantities at a minimum expense.
A form of construction out the improved machine is shown by way of example on the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig.2 shows in side elevation, partly in section, parts of the machine, the trout wall is shown as removed and the parts of the machine are shown in tl-e positions which they assume at the instant at which the eyelet is being taken by the catch pin.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 in which the parts are shown in the positions which they assume at the instant of the flanging of an eyelet.
Fig. l is a view similar to Fig. 2 in which the parts are shown in the positions which the assume durin the return to the initial. b V
positions.
Fig. 5 is a frontelevation.
Fig. 6 is a plan view on line A P oi Fin. 4.
F 7 is a. cross section through the eye- .lct reservoir on line (-l) oi? Fig. 6.
The frame of the machine is composed. of the two side walls 1, .1 connected by the bed plate 2 and the cross bar 3. Sit the center of the frame the pr ssure lever of the mm chine is arranged so that it can oscillate around the pivot pin 4. This pressure lever consists of the eyelet reservoir 5 and. the cheeks 6 rigidly connected with said reservoir. In the eyelet reservoir, which serves at the same time as handle and which is Serial .tTo. 613,057.
preferably of cylindrical shape, an eyeletchannel 8 with lateral oblique inlet openings '7 is arranged, which is covered by a plate 82 overlapping at both sides. The orifice of the eyelet channel 8 turned towards the fulcrum is connected with raceway 9 located at or in the pressure lever. The outer end of the eyelet reservoir is closed by a lid 10. After the lid 10 has been novcd the eyelets are filled into the rcsevoir and by the oscillating mov'on'ient ot' the lever the eyelets are moved through lateral inlets oi the channel and are ted into the racewaji". The inner end of the eyelet reservoir is mounted in a sheet iron sleeve it upon which the two sheet iron checks (5 are lined which are pivot ally fixed upon the pint. The eyelet rcser voir, sleeve and checks form, as already mentioned above, a. 1' d whole which serves as pressure or open lug lever. the checks (3 a sheet iron plate 152 is fixed which serves as a. bottom-tor the raceway Upon each cheek 6 are fixed bars 18 which serve as guides for the eyelets. The end of the raceway which is situated under the pivot pin is closed by elastic tongues 14. The checks 6 have each adownwardly directed extension 15. ln these extensions 15 a bolt 16 is fixed which serves as pivot tor the set piston 17 which is pulled to the right by the action of a spring 18. The set piston 17 has a lateral extension 19 with laterally projecting studs 20 hearing against the extensions 15 of checks 6 and limiting thus the oscillation of the set piston in the right hand side direction. of rest of the set piston which standseriactly under the front eyelet in"the raceway 9, which eyelet is retainer! by the elastic tongues 'll. The/set piston 17 is perforated and the pivot bolt 16 has a cross boring. A. catch pin ill is ii'iserted into these two horinn's so that itenp'ages with the set piston. ihe catch pin 2i. is secured in its position hy lriction so that it can he easily displaced. The watch pin projects d ";-.'ii\vards "from the set piston so that at the depression ol handle 5 it comes in contact with an inclined. surface 252 and is pushed. inward until it engages with the eyelet situated over it. It the depressing ot'. the hand lever coutinues the laterally projecting studs 26 moving along the curved edges 225, 2 upon the inner side of each. frame 1 communicate to the set piston 17 an oscillating movement in left hand side direction until. the tuds 2(1 Between This the position" 2 inane-ea have reached the concentric part 24 of the curves 23.
During this movement the catch pin 21 which is pushed upward removes the front eyelet from the raceway 9 by pushing it past the elastic tongues 14. The eyelet sits now loosely upon the catch pin of the set piston and, moving along thepath indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and remaining below the mouth of the machine, it gets below the upper die 25. If the depression of the hand lever 5 is now completed, the set piston remains at rest with regard to the hand lever and it is moved towards the upper die 25 along an arc-shaped path as if the eyeletwas mounted upon the left end of a rigid twoarmed lever so that the eyelet is engaged by the die 25, pressed into the material and flanged. The centering pin 26 of the die 25 presses back the catch pin 21 into its initial position until the downward movement is completed (Fig. At the succeeding upward movement caused by the pull spring 30 the catch pin comes in contact with the inclined surface 22 from the left hand side (Fig. 4c) and makes the same oscillate towards the right around pivot pin 27 until the catch pin is released whereupon the inclined surface is returned into the initial position by the action of spring 28, the position being oetermined by the nose 2%) coming in contact with the cross bar 3. The
pressure lever, set piston, catch pin and other parts have also adopted their initial positions and the next operation can begin, a fresh eyelet having been fed to the front end of the raceway.
In order to prevent the eyelets in the raceway from sliding back into the channel when the eyelet reservoir is being pressed downward, the transition from the channel to the'raceway is stepped. The step 31 acts like a check valve, so that the eyes are generally prevented from sliding back into the channel.
What I claim is:
1. An eyelet inserting machine comprising a frame, a pressure lever mounted therein, an eyelet reservoir forming an extension of said pressure lever and serving as an operating handle therefor, an eyelet set oscillably mounted on said pressure lever, a catch pin mounted in said eyelet set, an eyelet raceway on said pressure lever, a cooperating set mounted on said frame and stationary cam means for causing the eyelet set on the pressure lever to more fromv a position under the end of the raceway into a position where it is adapted to cooperate with the set on the frame.
2. An eyelet insertingmachine comprising a frame, a pressure lever mounted thorein, a rod-shaped eyelet reservoir forming an extension of said pressure lever and serving as an operating handle therefor, an eyelet channel in said eyelet reservoir having oblique inlets at the sides displaced the one with regard to the other, a catch plate closing said eyelet channel at the top and overlapping at both sides, an eyelet set oscillably mounted on said pressure lever, a catch pin mounted in. said eyelet set, an eyelet raceway on said pressure lever, a cooperating set mounted on said frame and stationary' cam means for causing the eyelet set on the pressure lever to move from a position under the end if the raceway into a position where it is aoapted to cooperate with the set on the frame.
3. An eyelet inserting machine compris ing a frame, a pressure lever mounted therein, an eyelet reservoir forming an extension of said pressure lever and serving as an operating handle therefor, an eyelet set oscillably mounted on said pressure lover, a catch pin mounted in said eyelet set, an eyelet raceway on said pressure lever, a cooperating set mounted on said frame and stationary cam means for causing the eyelet set on the pressure lever to move from a position under the end of the raceway into a position where it is adapted to cooperate with the set on the frame, and an oscillable inclined guiding surface for guiding said catch pin into the raceway for the eyelets before said raceway has adopted a position below the horizontal, for holding said catch pin in this advanced position until it is depressed again at the Hanging of the eyelet by the riveting die, said catch pin causing, when returned to the initial position, said inclined surface -to oscillate around its pivot.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
