Application filed May 9,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Venn F. ROBINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cope, in the county Washington and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and uset'ul Improvements in a latch for Gates. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a latch and the like and has for its object ally improve upon latches of this by providing a device which will for gates to genercharacterbe of extremely simple, durable and inexpensive construction, one which is etlicient and reliable in operation, and well adapted to the pun pose for which it is designed.
With these and numerous other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective of a gate or door and its frame showing my invention attached thereto,
Figure 2 is a vertical section taken therethrough,
Figure 3 is a. horizontal transverse section taken on the line 33 of Figure 2 looking in the direction or the arrow, and
Figure. l is a detailed perspective or the latch mechanism.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that a door or gate 1 is hinged at 2 in the frame 3. All of these parts may be of conventional construction except that the free edge of the door 1 is notched as at 8. The latch mechanism consists of a spring bar 4 having a curved extension 5 at its upper end which terminates in an eye 6 to receive a screw or other like device '4' thereby holding the latch mechanism upon the door. This spring bar 4 is flat in con struction being substantially rectangular in cross sect-ion and terminates at its lower end in a U-shaped latch 8 which extends through the notch 3' of the door 1 and normally engages a keeper 9. The extension 10 on the Ushaped latch 8 passes through an eye or sleeve 11 aS does the lower portion of the spring bar 4; which is circular in cross secieee. Serial N'o. 559,540.
tion. These sleeves 11' are carried by the bracket 1.2 which is suitably fixed adjacent the free edge of the door. An operating bail 13 is formed on the extension 10 and normally extends in a plane at substantially right angles to the door 1. There is an extension 14: on the bail 13 which extends through an opening 16 in the door. It will be seen that by pulling upon the bail 13 or pushing upon the extension 14 the U-shape latch 8 may be fulcrumed from engagement with the keeper 9 and that the door may be readily opened. the spring bar inormally keeps this latch 8 in engagement with the keeper when the door is closed.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood without a more extended explanation. As numerous changes in form, proportion, and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing vfrom the spirit of this invention, I do not wish to be limited to the construction herein shown and described other than as claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is In combination, a door having a notch in one edge, a bracket disposed on the door -ad acent the notch and provided with a pair of spaced aligned sleeves, a latch mecha nism including a spring bar flat in formation fixed to the door and provided with an ex tension circular in cross section passing through one of the sleeves, a U-shaped latch formed by the extension and passing through the notch of the door, a second extension formed on the latch and passing through the other sleeve, and operating means formed on the second mentioned extension so as to rotate the latchin the manner and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VERN F. RGBINSON.
