HAIR CURLER.
Application filed January 30, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON D. MnsnnoLn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milford, in the countyof New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hair Curlers; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and ex act description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in f Fig. 1, a plan view of a hair curler constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2, a side view of the same, with the tongues in their partly open position.
Fig. 3, a plan view of a modified form of my invention.
This invention relates to improvement in hair curlers, and particularly to hair curlers which comprise a frame with a tongue hinged thereto, and a guard sliding on said frame and adapted to engage with one end of the tongue, and is an improvement on the invention set forth in United States Patent No. 1,437,347, dated November 28, 1922, granted on an application filed by me June 5, 1922.
In the use of the device of the said patent, the tongue was placed near the roots of the hair and the strand wound around the tongue, which was then interlocked with the frame, but in using the curlers on short, or bobbed, hair, it is desirable to work from the outer end of the hair toward the scalp, and to successfully accomplish this necessitates the use of an auxiliary tongue, or, in other words, two tongues between which the ends of the hair are placed and around both of which tongues the hair is wound from the outer end inward.
The object of this invention is to provide a hair curler of the type above referred to, with an auxiliary tongue, and the invention consists in a hair curler of the character described, having certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and particularly re cited in the claims.
Serial No. 615,923.
In carrying out my invention, as in my prevlous patent, I employ a frame formed from a strip of wire, the central portion of which forms a rear bar 10, from which sides 11 and 12 project, the ends 13 and 14 being turned inward to meet and form a longitudinal frame. Preferably, the ends 13 and 14c will be entered into a sleeve 15, which forms a stop. The main tongue is preferably formed from a single piece of wire, doubled at the center to form a tip .18, the ends of the tongue being formed with eyes 19 and 20, which are bent around the bar 10. Mounted upon the sides and adapted to be moved thereon is a slide 21, adapted to engage with the tip 18 of the main tongue. In the preferred form of my invention, I employ an auxiliary tongue 23, also formed from a strip of wire, the ends 24: of which are bent around the rear bar 10. This auxiliary tongue is shorter than the main tongue.
Instead of forming the tongue 23 with two side bars, it may consist of a wire 25, which may be located between the sides of the main tongue and bent around the rear bar 10, between the sides of the main tongue.
In the use of either construction, the two tongues are slightlyseparated, and the ends of a strand of hair are placed between them and then the device is turned so as to wind the strand around the two tongues, connecting them together. This is readily permitted by separating them from the frame to the fullest extent. When the hair is fully wound upon the tongues, they are turned down against the frame, and the tip of the main tongue engaged by the slide 21, so as to lock the main tongue in place, as in the construction of my previous patent, while the auxiliary tongue is held in place by the hair wound around it. In this way I provide a hair curler particularly adapted for use on short hair.
I claim:
1. A hair curler, comprising a Wire frame, having a rear bar and slide mounted on said frame, a main tongue hinged to said rear bar and adapted to be engaged by said slide, and an auxiliary tongue shorter than the main tongue also hinged to said rear bar ing its ends engaged with the said rear bar. and projecting forwardly therefrom. In testimony whereof, I have signed this 10 2. A hair curler, comprising a frame, inspecification in the presence of two subscribcluding a rear bar and slide mounted on said ing witnesses.
frame, a tongue hinged to said rear bar and MILTON D. MESEROLE.
adapted to be engaged by said slide, and an Witnesses: auxiliary tongue formed from a single piece JEANIE B. ROWE, of Wire and doubled at thev center and hav- GEORGE M. HAYES.
