J. s. BRENNAN ORNAMENTAL GROSS Filed y 26. 1923 Patented .lan. i5, 192%.
JAMES S. BRENNAN, OF ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS.
oannmnn rnn caoss.
Application filed May 26,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LJAMns S. BRENNAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ornamental Crosses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an ornamental cross and more particularly to the manner of constructing andornamenting the same whereby the cross may be formed of wood, metal or other suitable material and provided with an attractive background of or-' namental materials, such as gems, for enhancing its appearance generally as well as serving as a background for thedisplay of religious relics, symbols, etc. I
One object of the present invention is to provide a device of this character described which may be readily and easily formed, and whichmay be so constructed as to present a novel and pleasing appearance, while at the same time embodying various improved structural details which facilitate itsconstruction and serve to impart to the completed article the finished appearance'characteristic of ornamental articles formed from a single piece of'material. I
Other objects and advantages of the invention relate to various details of construc: tion and novel arrangementvof the parts as will be more fully set forth'in the detailed description to follow.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the completed structure. i
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view taken along the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and,
Fig. 4 is a detail view partially in section, showing the manner in which certain of the ornamental sections are secured in place.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated herewithcomprises a cross consisting of a main upright portion 1 and arms 2 extending outwardly from opposite sides thereof at a suitable point on the main upright portion. The manner of forming the main body portion 1 and the arms '2 is in all respects similar as will be more specifically set forth hereinafter.
As shown more clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the main body, portion of the cross comprises a central plate 3 which extends 1923. Serial No. 641,645.
substantially throughout the length thereof and to the opposite sides of which are secured edge plates 4 and 5 extending substantially beyond the front and rear faces of the plate 3 whereby shallow recesses 6 and 7 are formed at the front and rear of the main body portion of the" cross when the parts 3, 1 and 5 are secured together, each of said recesses being formed by oneface of the plate 3 in conjunction with the edge plates 1 and 5, the ends thereof being closed by end plates 8 and 9 which aresimilar to the edge plates 4: and 5 and are secured to the ends of the plate 3 after a manner similar to that in which the edge plates 4 and 5 are secured to the edges thereof.
The arms 2 are formed after a manner substantially the same as that described in connection with the main body portion and each consists ofa central plate 10 which may be formed integral with the central plate 3 previously described or secured thereto in any suitable or desired manner so that the front and rear faces of the central plates 10 are substantially flush with the front and rear faces of the central plate. 3 respectively. Edge plates 11 and 12 are secured to the edges of the central plates 10 and end plates 14 are secured to the free ends thereof, after a manner similar to that in which the edge plates 4 and 5 and end plates 8 and 9am secured to the central plate 3, whereby recesses 15 and 16 are formed upon each side of the arms 2 when the parts 10, 11 and 12 have been secured together, which communicate with and are of substantially the same depth and general contour as the recesses 6 and 7 formed upon opposite sides of the body portion. Thus there is formed a base structure in the form of a cross which contains recesses upon opposite sides thereof, each of which recesses extends throughout substantially the entire length of the body and arms portions of the cross. The recesses located upon the front and rear sides of the base structure may, be of equal depth or not dependent upon the particular structural features which it may be desirable to employ in manufacture and the manner of filling the same with ornamental or finish material in plastic or solid. form;
Inthe present embodiment of the invention the recess formed upon one side of the base structure is filled with ornamental stones or gems of any desired character which may be supported by holding plates 17 the form and size of the holding plates be ing suchthat each fits snugly within the recess and supports the stories 18 carried thereby in such a manner that the fronts of the several gems will be substantially flush with the front portions of the edge and end plates which surround the recess. The gems 18 may be held in position. by cups 19 carried by the holding plates 17 after a manner wellknown in the art, and each plate 17 may be secured to the face of the central plate 3 by means of a plurality of brads or pins 20.
After the holding plates 17, carrying the gems 18, have been positioned in the recess formed upon one side of the cross structure one or more finish plates 21' of any desired material may be inserted in the recess formed upon theopposite side of the structure to conceal the attachingmeans employed for securing the several parts together and impart a smooth and finished appearance to that side of the structure.
While in its present embodiment the cross structure may be formed advantageously of wood strips secured together by brads, nails, glue, etc, my invention comprehends in its broader aspects the formation of the structure from metals such as gold, silver, nickel, etc, and when formed of metal the structure may be built up of separate pieces suitably secured together as shown herewith or the base structure may be cast or otherwise formed from an integral piece of metal with a recess extending. substantially throughout the length of the main body portion and arms upon one side thereof. In that case a similar recess may or may not be formed upon the opposite side of the structure and gems may be secured in the recess formed upon oneside. ofthe structure by being.
placed in individual settings, byv holding plates appropriately secured in the recess, or by being held therein by a suitable cement. However, regard-less of the particular materials from which the structure is formed it is my purpose in any event to provide a recess upon at least one side of the cross and to secure a plurality of gems or ornamental stones insuch recess in such a manner that tte front faces of the gems 0r stones will be substantially flush with the edges of the material bordering the recess to give a pleasing and ornamental appearance to the structure nd serve asa background for a religious T"8ll(1 or image which may be placed thereon. In the present instance I have shown a corpus 22 positioned upon the cross against the background of ornamental gems 1'8 and a plaque 24 similarly positioned relative to the ornament background and suitably secured tothe structure above the corpus. The spaces between the arms and main body por- ;tion of the cross may have positioned therein ornamental plates 25 of metal or other suitable material having radiating vanes 26 or other'ornamental configuration adapted to form with the cross a novel and ornamental appearance. Each of the ornamental plates 25 is provided with a brad 27 adapted to be forced into the main body portion of the cross at the junction. of the arms and body a portion to assist in' holding the plate in position while the vanes lyingadjacent tootheand thesecuring devices practically entirely concealed from view.
When the several parts are assembled the structure presents the appearance ofbeing formed of a minimum number of parts and the ornamental stones and ornamental plates secured between the arms and body portion ofthe cross combine to serve as a novel and artistic background for religious relicsor symbols displayed thereon.
What I claim is 1 ,1. An ornamental cross" comprising a body portion and arms extending outwardly therefrom, the body portion and arms being v provided upon one side thereof withv a re cess extending substantially throughout the length of said bodyiportion and arms, and a plurality of or'namentalstones secured in the recess. V ,2. An, ornamental cross comprising a body portion and arms extending outwardly therefrom, thefbody portion and arms being provided upon one side thereof with arecess extending substantially throughout. the
length of said body portion and arms and having an edge portion bordering the recess throughout its extent and a plurality! of ornamental stones secured within the recess,
the exposed frontfaces-of said stones being substantially flush with the front of said edge portion. j I
3. An ornamental ,cross comprising a body portion and arms extending outwardly therefrom, the body portion and arms being provided upon opposite sides thereof with recesses extending substantially throughout the length of said body portion and arms and having edge portions surrounding said recesses throughouttheir extent, a plurality of ornamental stones secured within the "recess formed upon one side of said body and arms. and a strip of finish material secured within the recess formed upon the opposite side thereof. a
l-. An ornamental cross comprising a body portion and arms extending outwardly therefrom, the body portion and arms being formed of a central plate having edge plates and end plates secured thereto to form with the central plate a cross provided with recesses upon opposite sides thereof, a plurality of ornamental stones secured within the recess formed upon one side of said cross, and a strip of finish material secured within the recess formed upon the opposite side thereof.
5. An ornamental cross comprising a body portion and arms extending outwardly therefrom, the body portion and arms being provided upon opposite sides thereof with recesses extending substantially throughout the length of said body portion and arms and having edge portions surrounding said recesses throughout their extent, and a plurality of ornamental stones secured Within the recess formed upon one side of said body and arms.
6. An ornamental cross comprising a body portion and arms extending outwardly therefrom, sector shaped ornamental plates positioned between said body portion and said arms, and means for securing said sector shaped plates to the body portion and arms respectively.
7. An ornamental cross comprising a body portion and arms extending outwardly therefrom, said body portion and arms being provided upon one side thereof with a recess extending substantially throughout the length of said body portion and arms, a plurality of ornamental stones secured in the recess, and sector shaped ornamental plates positioned between said body portion and arms and firmly secured thereto.
8. An ornamental cross comprising a body portion and arms extending outwardly therefrom, said body portion and arms being provided upon opposite sides thereof with recesses extending substantially throughout the length of said body portion and arms and having edge portions surrounding said recesses throughout their extent, a plurality of ornamental stones secured within the recess formed upon one side of said body and arms, and sector shaped ornamental plates positioned between said body portion and arms and firmly secured thereto.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
