Application filed June 25, 1921. Serial No. 480,331.
T 0 all whom 1S/may concern.'
l Be it known that I, LOUIS l?. Vos'rMAN, citizen of the United States residing at Park Rapids, in the county of lubbard and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Stovepipe Couplers, of which the following is a speciiication.
The invention has reference to couplers for pipes and more particularly to means for fastening sections of a stove pipe together in such a way as to prevent the sections from pulling apart at the joints, thereby eliminating all danger of fire and destruction of property from escaping sparks and live coals.
An additional object is to provide pipe coupling means of an improved character which will keep the pipe from sagging if run horizontally along a ceiling or other support and which will eliminate the hazardous risk of the old loose-joint pipe.
With the above and other objects in view the invention may be said to reside generally in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully pointed out andy-described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1, is a front view of the invention as applied to a pipe joint; Figure 2, is a side view illustrating the manner in which the separable fasteners engage, one with the other; Figure 3, an enlarged sectional view of the locking elements of the coupler; and Figure 4, a plan View of one of the fastening buckles.
In the drawings, 1 and 2 indicate sections of a pipe having their adjacent ends telescoped to provide a joint, as may be seen to advantage in Figure 3 of the drawing. In applying the invention to the joints, each pipe section is provided on opposite sides with a strap-loop 3 which may be riveted or otherwise fastened to the section as indicated at 4. To strap 3 of pipe section 1 are connected buckles 5 while strap 3 of pipe j section 2 carries the eye members 6 engageable by the buckles for locking the sections together at the joints. As the fastening means on both sides of the pipe are similar a description of one will suffice for both.
As will be seen from Figure 4 of the drawings, buckle 5 consists of a plate 7 loosely supported by strap 3 and bifurcated at one end to provide spaced parallel lugs 8, between which extends a centrally located spring tongue 9. This spring is adapted to bear upon and tension the clasp member 10 of the buckle when the latter is thrown to locking position, as shown in Figure 3, the rear end 11 of the clasp being pivotally supported between lugs 8 and under spring tongue 9 as s-hown. The eye member engageable with clasp member 10 of the buckle may consist of kan elongated plate loosely joined to strap 3 of pipe section 2 and provided with a plurality of laterally spaced openings 12 extending transversely of the plate and forming eyes through which clasp 10 may be inserted. When the buckles and eyes of the pipe sections are relatively fas- Tj @ma tened, they project across thejoint of the thesections are held in proper alignment 'j and prevented from sagging even should the pipe be disposed horizontally along a Geiling or other support. Spring 9 of the buckle tends to hold clasp 10 in locking position and thereby prevent accidental separation of the fastening elements. To connect the sections, clasp 10 of each buckle fastener is run forwardly of plate 7 as shown in Figure 4 so that it will be free to engage anyone of openings 12 in eye plate 6, subsequent to which it may be thrown to locking position as shown in Figure 3, thereby causing the pipe section to be iirmly joined together.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings have reference to what might be considered to be the approved or preferred form of my invention. ,I desire it to be understood, however, that I may make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, material, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desireto secure by Letj tions having adjacent ends telescoped to and loop straps for hinging the separable l0 provide a joint, separable fasteners7 and fasteners, one each to each pipe section. means comprising` loop straps for radially In testimony whereof I llave affixed my hintvgng one separable fastener to each pipe signature in presence of two Witnesses, b sec lon. 1
