Description

W. F. STAGGERS FRICTION GRIB'DUST CAP Filed April 26. 1922 Patented darn. 155, i924.
lTE ElTihTEfi PATENT FRICTION-GRIP DUST GAP.
Application filed April 26, 1922.
To all whom dz, may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. STAG- onns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mannington, in the county of Marion and State of est Virginia, have invented a new and useful Friction-Grip Dust Cap, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel dust cap which can be quickly ap plied to valve stems without wasting the time usuall necessary for screwing a cap onto a valve stem in the customary way. I attain these and other objects of my invention by the mechanisms illustrated in the accon'ipanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention with the rubber cap 5 partly in section;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the cap; and
Fig. 3 is a similar view of the cap applied to a valve stem.
Like numerals indicate like parts in each of the several views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, i. provide a suitable metal cap 2 having a constricted end portion 3 frictionally engaging valve 1, as shown in Fig. 2. ll also provide slots 3 extending from the free end or the cap through the constricted end portion l, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. ll also Serial No. 556,802.
provide a rubber cover 5 which completely encascs the cap and prevents dust from getting into the valve through slots 3.
In using the device the cap may be pressed straight down over the valve stem without stopping to screw it on. The longitudinally extending slots permit of this operation and the resilience oi? the slotted portions of the cap causes it to take a friction grip on the threaded valve stem, when in place.
Referring to Figs. 4 and 5, I may provide cap 2 having an enlarged section 5 having an anteriorly threaded portion 6 011 which is inserted the rubber ring 7, the upper por tion of which abuts on the shoulder 8 of the cap, as shown in Fig. 5. The rubber ring 7 frictionally. engages the valve 1 and per mits this cap to function in the same man ner as the cap illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 in the matter of its taking a friction grip on the threaded valve stem. The rubber ring 7 also functions as a dust member.
What I claim is:
A trictiongrip dust-cap having a re stricted end portion, the cap having a pin-- rality of slots extending longitudinally of the cap through said end portion, and a rubber cover snugly fitting over the entire cap and preventing the ingress of dust through the slots.
WILLIAM lF. STAGGERS.
