T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY Hon-Bacon,
United States citizen, residing. in Shawnee on Delaware, Pennsylvania, ve' invented Games.
The invention relates to the game of golf and consists in a set of devices placed in the field of play and designed to serve 'as datum points wherewith to locate the position of a ball falling in the rough or long grass adjoining the fairwa It isa matter of common experience with golf players that it is difficult to mark the spot in the; rough where a ball lands, so as to be able to find it promptly. This is ordinarily due, as I have ascertained, to the absence in the background and surroundin landscape of any istinctive objects whic' the e e, While intently fixed on the moving bal can recognize and use as the basis of ascertaining its location. This invention provides such objects, herein termed target devices, the same being adapted to be placed in positions suitable for the purpose, as more fully exbunkers; and 5 the adjoining long lained below. Theuse of these targets is ound to give a very substantial assistance in locating balls which "fall in the rough and, besides savin time and reducing expense for lost bal s, also promotes the enoyi me'nt of the gamein eneral. 1
he accompan ing rawings show in Figure 1 a plan 0 one link of a golf course,
supplied with this invention, and- Figures 2,
3, 4 and, 5 represent examples of suitable targets in their preferred form of construction. In Figure 1, the reference numeral 1 represents the driving tee; 2 the short grass or fairway; 3, the putting green; 4 traps or ass or rough. According to the extent of its area,
each section or portion. of the rough is equipped with one or more of the target devices which are set up in appropriately distributed positions, so as to e plainly visible from the tee, or other point where the shot is made, and preferably-they are located in the rough itself or where oif-direction balls commonly fall. ;A suitable set. of
- locations is indicated in Fi ure' '1, where the targets "are mark'ed 6. The several targets are shaped, marked or pai-ntedso as to be conspicuous andsuflieiently prominent to enable them to'be seen and 'reco nized by the indirect vision of the eye, t at is to say, to enable one or more of them to be recognized when the. eye is focussed elsewhere, as on the ball or on the spot where it was seen to land or stop and each target in a group is made distinctively different from the others in the group, so ,that there will be little likelihood of confusing one with another.
-With the mo h thus equipped, the flight of the ball is f0 lowed by the eye and, as it nears the ground, the eye is able to pickup one or more of the neighboring targets and can thereby-recognize the position of'the ball with reference to it or to them, so that when the ball has come to rest its osition is thereby identified. As shown in igures 2 to 5, each target may be constituted of two parallel post membersfl, united at one'end y a rectan lar late 8, the other ends being pointe so t atthey may be easily pushed into the painted white, wit a distinctive design on each, which may be in red, .or other color calculated to attract attention. In the form at present preferred they are about 42 inches longby '6 inches wide. Obviously ound. The plates are t the detail construction of the target is subject to 'wide variation, according to the pref; ercnce of the maker and the means'whereby they are mounted infthe rough may 0bviously alsobe 'varied. They could, for example, be supported by feet or a pedestal or in any'other way which would enable them to be moved by the player, if one of them should constitute an obstruction to his ball or the swin of his club.
Havin escribed my invention and the best mo e in which I now contemplate employing the same, what I claim as the subject of this patent is:
1. In the game of golf, the combination with the fairway and the adjoining rough,
lar eppearunce plaeeg'l in said -rqugh and 3. In the combination of claim' 1, a set of serving nadatum wherewlth to fix targets having means for removably supthe location of the ell. x, porting them in the rou h. 1o
2. In the eembmetlon of claim 1, a set of In testimony whereof, have signed this I target devices -si m1la r1y slgapedlnd each specification.
