UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.
STEPHEN.HENRY, OF MARSHFIELD, MASSACHSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOOLeHANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,057, dated March 3, 18'474; application filed l January 12, 1874.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN HENRY, of Marshfield, inthe county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Tool-Handles, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l denotes a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, of an awl-handle constructed in accordance with my invention. My invention has reference to that class ot awl or tool handles provided with a furcated metallic socket-piece, in which the shank of the tool is inserted and clamped by means of a conical nut affixed on the conical outer end of such socket-piece; and my invention consists in the peculiar construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Devices of this character have heretofore been constructed in which the handles have been formed in one piece, and with the shank of the jaws or socket-piece extending axially through, or partially through, the same, and with its conical outer end projecting therefrom, such end receiving a conical-shaped nut, which required the employment of a wrench to clamp or secure the tool in its jaws, or release it therefrom.
The object of my invention is to so form and combine the parts as to enable such functions to be effected without the use of a wrench, and enable the nut to perform the double duty of clamping the jaws and connecting the two parts of the handle.
In the drawing, A and B denote the two parts of the handle, the part A being formed of wood, and solid, and having the shank of the furcated socket-piece C driven axially therein, so as to be firmly secured. The part B is made of a hollow bell shape, and may be composed of hard rubber, or any other suit able material, such part having the conical nut D incorporated with, or rmly secured to, one end thereof. The lower end of the part B has a diameter a little greater than the contiguous end of the part A, and so as to be capable of sliding freely on and off the same, when the nut D is turned or rotated in the proper directions. The inner end of the part A may be formed plain, or have a series of holes formed in it to receive the shanks of a set of supernume-rary awls or tools, the part B being formed hollow, serving as a chamber therefor, as shown in the drawing.
By thus forming the handle in two parts, and securing the socket-piece to one part, and the nut to the other, as described, the nut serves both to clamp` the furcated jaws upon the shank of the tool, and to connect the two parts A and B of the handle, which may readily be eifected by simply grasping the part Ain one hand, and the part B in the other, and rotating the part B.
I do not claim the invention as shown and described in Letters Patent No. 6,261, as my invention differs therefrom, both in construction and mode of operation.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- The improved tool-holding handle, consisting ofthe parts A and B, constructed as described, and having the furcated socket-piece C and the nut D respectively xed to the said parts, in the manner, and to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
STEPHEN HENRY.
