To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that Homcn G, Dooumn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Mari on and State of Iowa, has invented new and useful Improvements in Wall-Paper Pastin and Folding Machines, of which the fol owing is a specification.
The to provide a machine having means for holding a supply of wall paper 1n a continuous row, then advancing the paper through a paste applying apparatus and finally folding the paper in the usual layers or folds for convenient handling when placing the same on the wall. Further the machine makes provision for measuring the length of paper pasted and folded and it is still further provided with means which will permit the formation of the supply roll from the individual rolls, the ends of the individual rolls being matched and secured together by an adhesive paper tape in the formation of the supply roll. The folding of the paper is accomplished by means of a movable platform,
this platform being mounted forreciprocating movement and the movement being accomplished by a crank handle which aside from being operativel connected to the table is also operative y connected to the pasting and advancing rolls by which the paper is conducted from the supply rolls to the table. Automatically operated clamping members are carriedby the table or platform and these clamp and securely hold upon the table the different plates formed in j the operationof the machine; Aside from the general purpose above mentioned, the invention further contemplates provision for an apparatus of the 'kind stated which is comparatively simple in construction, durable and effective in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.

On the outer face of the plate 17 in which its bearing is carried, the shaft 20 carries a sprocket wheel 23 and a turning crank 24 attached to it outside of the sprocket wheel,

With the engagement of the pin 30 in the socket 32, the two sprockets. 28 and 26 be come positively connected so that any movement imparted to .the one is immediately transmitted to the other. The construction provides, however, for a disengagement of these two sprockets and this is accomplished by withdrawing the pin 30 from the socket 32 until the pin 35is freed from its socket. A slight angular movement then imparted to the head 31 will throw the pin 35 to a position where it may not enter its socket,

Of course it becomes eseential'to rovide some means to prevent the reservoir when the device is not in use and to this end there is within the reservoir a bar 42 which may be forced down into contact with the bottom of the reservoir or elevated from contact therewith. This bar at its center has a ivotal connection with the lower end 0 the screw stud 39 andif the latter is turned to lower, the bar is perforce brought into firm contact with the bottom of the reservoir when it effectually closes the perforations 41. When turned in a direction to elevate it, the bar is perforce elevated and being raised clear of the bottom the paste may flow under it and through the perforations.

The roll 43 is substantially a distributing roll. The paste reaching the roll 43 through the perforations 41, is not distributed over the surface of the latter but forms in rings thereearound until it reaches the roll 46,the contacting surfaces 'of the two rolls then serving to distribute the paste over them and the latter rolls transfer this paste to the wall paper paste between it and the roll 47 The roll receives its rotary motion by an operative connection with the roll 46, this operative connection being in register or counting mechanism to indicate shaft is journaled in two vertically disposed blocks 52 which are interconnected by means of rods 53, of which there are two, one disgglsed above and the other below the shaft.

The shaft 51, between the two blocks in which it is journaled, is provided with screw threads, as indicated b 55, and a movable coun medium is sli ably mounted on the rods 53 and provided with a threaded hole in which the threads 55 of the shaft 51 engage. This counting medium consists of the complementary blocks 56 and the bearing holes for the rods 53 and the threaded ho e for the threads 55 are formed half in one block and half in the other, the two blocks being detachably connected together by means'of a screw 57 which passes loosely through one block' and threadingly engages the other. Obviously when the screw 57 is tightened to secure the two blocks 56 firmly together, the turning of the shaft 51 will y 58 over certain indicia on the scale on the plate 54 will indicate the passage of a specied length of paper over the roll 47.- Directly below the roll 47 there is mounted a trimming couple for the purpom of removing the selvage edges from the wall paper and this trimmin con le consists of the rolls 59 and 60, eac of t ese rolls carrying a circular knife 61 adjacent one end and being formed against the other end with a peripheral ve 62. It will be ob served that the knife carried by the one roll plays within the groove formed in the other roll. The two knives are therefore carried adjacent the opposite ends of their respec tive rolls.
These two rolls 59 and 60 are carried on suitable shafts both of which are rotatably mounted in the plates 17 and operatively connected by meansiof intermeshlnggears 63. The shaft of the roll 59 protrudes a suflicient distance beyond its gear 63 to receive a sprocket 64. Movement is imparted to the'roll 59 through the sprocket 64 and to the the operative connection between the two rolls consisting of the gear couple 63 makes for the imparting of motion to. the roll 60.

This plate acts as a support for the paper between the point where it leaves the supply roll and enters between the rolls 46 and 47. The two side plates 72 are carried at the ends of the plate 71 and serve as guides for the side edges of the-paper, thus ensuring it maintaining a certain position when passing between the rolls.
Below the roll a transversely disposed plate 73 is cal-seams plate being attached to the two plates 17 with its width disposed in a vertical plane. Below this plate 73 there are carried two transversely disposed bars 74, the two being spaced from each other and positioned one below the roll 60 and the other below the roll 59. The paper leaving the t rolls 59 and 60 passes before the plate 73 and between the two bars 74, being laid in folds uponthe work table as the latteris advanced to and from along its track A clamp is provided ad'acent each end of the work table for securing the folds of the same asthe level of the paper in place thereon as the paper is folded and each of these clamps comprises a pair of bell crank levers 75 secured together: in spaced relation to eachother by pins 76.
These clamping feet or levers 75 are pivotally mounted on the work table, each air between a pair of upstanding ears 77 w 'ch are attached to the work table. Connected with each pair of levers there is a contractile spring 78 which is attached one end to one of the pins 76 and the other end to the upper face of the work table, this pin being positioned adjacent the extremity of one arm of each of the levers. The'spring serves normall to hold the ends of the other arms of the be 1 crank levers in contact with a block 79 mounted on the iipper face of the work table. Means are provided for swingingrthe fingers backwardly with respect to the directions of movement of the work table when the latter reaches theiextremity of its movement in either direction. These means are carried by the frame 1 and consist of the L-shaped arms 89 and 90 which are attached to the frame so that one leg of each lies in a horizontal plane with the other depending in a vertical plane. After the table has advanced. far enough in its return movement to release the extension 81 from the lifting arm, the spring 79 will draw the clamping mmbers down upon the fold The table and it will be held in place thereon until the table reaches theend of its right hand movement, when the same cycle of operations will be repeated for the forming of a new fold when the table starts forward again a left hand direction.
To provide for the convenient forming of the supply roller 70, the main frame 1 isprovided with a top plate 91 to whose edge there ishingedly attached a swinging leaf 92. This swinging leaf may be turned upward, when not in use, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, but during the o eration of the machine it is swung outward y to lie in the same plane as the top plate 91 and in order that it may be maintained in this plane, there is provided a swinging brace member 93 which is hingedly attached to the frame -1 adjacent the bottom of the latter. This brace member at its upper edge engages Ill ' At the outer edge of the swin a transversely disposed batten 94 mounted on the under face of the swinging leaf 92. g leaf and on the top. faceof the latter t ere are carried two upstanding su ports 95, reset from their upperedge, as in icated at 96, to permit a bar 97 being held by the supports. viousl this bar may be'readily removed or place in position on the supports and its purpose is to hold the usual roll of 'wall pa er, such as that indicated by 98. The ro 97 is'inserted through the roll of paper and then laced upon the supports. The pa .r is t ereu on transferred from this r0 1 98 to the r01 70, or if the roll 98 be the initial roll, it is transferred directly to the rod 69 it being wound around the latter and o the rod 97. When one roll 98 has thus been wound around the rod 69 the beginning of this roll matches with the end of the roll previously wound around the rod 69. To provide for securing the two rolls together when matched in this manner, the roll 99 of sealing tape is provided, this seal-- ing tape being wound in a roll with its adhesive face outward. Thisroll of tape 99 is carried on a ool 100 which in turn is carried by a. smal shaft 101 rotatably mounted in depending bearing supports 102 which are attached to theunder face of the swinging leaf 92. The tape, therefore, may be drawn off the roll 99 and across the top face of the leaf 92. The two matched ends of the two rolls being connected are thereupon laid down upon the tape and the paper moistened, this operation causing the tape to adhere the two connected ends for the pur pose of holding them together. When this as been accomplished the second roll may be wound ofi the roll 97, whereupon a third roll is wound upon the 'roll 97 and the previous operation continued until a suppl roll, such as the suppl roll 70, is obtaine this supply roll by t e operation cited above being composed of a number of the usuai rolls such as the M1198.
Paper from the roll 70 is fed between the the distributin roll and the drying roll the paper passes etween the trimming rolls 59 and 60 whose knives 61 serve to trim the selvage edge therefrom. The a er is then passed on to the table on whic it is folded in the manner before described.
Obviously the means for operatively connecting the sprockets 28 and 26 provides for operatin the table independently or the feed an trimming rolls independently of the table. All that is necessary to accomplish this is to withdraw the pin. '30 froin the eye formed for it in the sprocket 26. The crank 29 will then, when turned, rotate only the feed and trimming roll. Thus the paper ma be initially brought to the work:
table wit out the latter being reciprocatcd during such operation. If it is necessary to move the work table without moving the feed and trimming rolls, this can be accomplished by the simple turning of the crank 24. When the pin. 30 is engaged with its eye or socket 32 formed in the the crank 29 serves to move all of t e parts of the device.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. A machine of the-character described embodying a work table, means for reci rocatingthe work table, means for fee ing paper from a supply roll to the work table, paper folding means carried by the work against the tension of the spring in one po sition of the work table.
2. A device for the purpose indicated comprising a main frame, rails carried by the main frame, a roller-supporting workin table traversing the rails and rotary cran shaft operatively carried with the work table to impart reciprocatory movement to the latter upon rotation of the shaft, a sprocket wheel carried by said crank shaft, a stud carried by the main frame in parallelism with said shaft, a sprocket wheel rotatably 'mounted on the stud, a chain traversing the last said sprocket wheel and that on the crank shaft, paper feeding rolls carried by the main frame and operatively connected for movement in synchronism, a second sprocket wheel carried on said stud, sprocket wheels operatively connected with said rolls, a chain traversing the last said sprocket wheels and the second sprocket wheel mounted on said stud, a crank handle connected with the last said sprocket wheel, and a spring actuated pin carried by the same and engageable with and disengageable from the first said s rocket wheel carried on the stud for operatively connecting the two sprocket wheels for rotation in unit or separately;
3. A machine for thepurpose indicated comprising a main frame, a table slidably mounted'ln the main frame and provided with means for reciprocating the same, means for feeding paper from a supply roll atively fixed lifting arm disposed in to the table, spaced bars carried by the table tion disposed between said bars, the other legs being disposed normally transversely of the work table at which time the crank portions are disposed longitudinally thereof, and springs tensioned between the crank portion and points on the table to dispose the fingers normally transversely of the table but 5 permit of them yieldingly moving in either direction toward positions in the direction of the length of the table.
4. A machine for the purpose indicated comprising a main frame, a table slidably mounted in the main frame and provided with means for reciprocating the same, means for feeding paper from a supply roll to the table, spaced bars carried by the table and extending longitudinally of the latter, fold engaging fingers of angular construction and having oneleg pivotally mounted in said bars and formed with a crank portion disposed between said bars, the other legs being disposed normall transversely of the work table at whic time the crank portions are disposed longitudinally thereof, and a spring tensioned between the crank portion and points on the table to dispose the fingers normally transversely of the table but permit of them yieldingly moving in either direction toward positions in the direction of the length of thetable, the frame being provided with L-shaped arms disposed at points co-incident with the points of extreme movement of the table in opposite direction for engagement with the fold engaging fingers at the adjacent ends of the table, the frame being further provided with intermediately. positioned L- shaped arms for alternate engagement with the fingers at the opposite ends of the table.
