G. H. MARTIN ET AL GUN Filed Nov. '7, 1921 INVEN'IORS 4 ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 8, 1.924.
UNITED STTES passe PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. MARTIN, NEW YORK, N. Y., AND ALBERT V. ARNOLD, OF DENVILLE, NEXV JERSEY.
GUN.
Applicationfiled November 7, 1921 Serial No. 513,267.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, GEORGE H. MARTIN, a citizen of the'United States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, and ALBERT V. ARNOLD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Denville, Morris County, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to guns and particularly to shoulder pad constructions.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide means for varying the angle of departurc or pitch angle of a gun in such a manner that the pitch may be changed from straight to either plus or minus pitch.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the balance of the gun may be varied or adjusted.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the range of the gun may be increased or decreased.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a gun having a stock constructed and arranged to facilitate the handling and correct positioning of the gun.
Another object of the invention is to reduce to a minimum the sudden upward or downward throw of the gun barrel when making a target.
Another object of the invention is to pro-- ride adjustable means for taking up a recoil of a gun.
Further objects will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings which form a part'of this application and in which Fig. 1 is an elevation of the butt end of a gun stock having a shoulder pad adjustably secured thereto and constructed in ac-' cordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 1S a plan vlew, partly in section, of the butt end of the gun with the base 5 plate and pivoted pad for the adjustable attachment secured thereto, the pad not being shown in this view, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation, broken away, of the gun butt and attachment.
The invention may be briefly described as an attachment for gun stocks comprising two relatively adjustable members so constructed and connected that one member may be swung pivotally with respect to the other member, means being provided for positively 12 which pass through openings formed in i the plate.
The base plate 11 has formed thereon at the lateral edges thereof upwardly extending flanges 13 having semi-cylindrical bearings 14 formed therein. The base plate also has an upwardly extending lug 15 disposed between the bearing recesses 14 and has a transverse aperture 16 formed therein for the receipt of a pivot pin as hereinafter described.
The shoulder pad comprises a body portion or cap 17 having longitudinal flanges 18 similar to the flanges 13 on the base plate 11. The cap also has a centrally disposed depression between the flanges for receiving the upwardly extending lug 15 carried by the base plate. The flanges 13 have formed thereon semi-cylindrical bearing portions 19 which are adapted to be positioned in the bearing recesses 14 formed in the flanges 13.
A pivot pin 20 extends through the bearings 19 and through the lug 15 whereby the cap or body member 17 may be pivotally oscillated or adjusted.
In order to adjust the shoulder pad and to retain the body in adjusted position, a pair of pins 21 are threaded into bosses 22 formed. on the base plate and suitably threaded to receive the pins. On their free ends the pins are provided with henii-sphe-rical heads 23 positioned in alinement with and adapted to be received by hemispherical sockets 24 formed in the cap or body member 17. In order to facilitate the rotation of the pins 21, each pin is provided with a cross pin or lever 25. A look nut 21 is carried by the threaded portion of each pin 21 and retains the pin against turning and in adjusted position.
In order to cushion the recoil, the body member or cap 17 preferably has secured thereto a cushioningmember-26 which may be formed of any suitable flexible or resilient material such as rubber or sponge rubber. In the drawings there is shown an intermediate member or shim 27 between the cap 17 and the pad or cushion 26.
It is believed that the operation of the attachment will be clear from the preceding description but it may be briefly described as follows.
hen the user of av gun desires to elevate the barrel the adjustment pin 21 on one side of the pivot 2.0 will be rotated in one direction and the adjustment pin on the other side of the pivot will be rotated in the opposite direction. It is assumed, 01": course, that the lock nuts 21 have been previously loosened. This will swing the shoulder pad about its pivot 20 and the pins will positively hold the pad in adjusted position. In this manner, therefore, the pitch of the gun may be varied at will. As above stated, the recoil will be taken up by the cushion 26.
Although one specific embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that the invention is capable of modification and that changes in the construction and in the arrangement of the various cooperating parts may be made without departing from the spirit Or scope of the invention as expressed-in the following claims.
hat we claim is:
1. In a gun, a solid stock, a shoulder pad pivoted thereto on a transverse pivot located back of'said' stock and means disposed on opposite sides of the pivot for bodily adj usting the pad with respect to the stock and retaining the pad in adjusted position.
2. An attachment for gun stocks, comprising a base-plate arranged to be rigidly affixed to therear end of a gun stock and having bearing parts, a shoulder padpivoted to said base-plate and having bearing parts coacting with thebearing parts on said base-plate and means disposed on opposite sides of the bearing parts for bodily adjusting said shoulder pad pivotally on the base-plate.
3. An attachment for gun stocks comprising a base plate having bearing parts, a shoulder. pad pivoted to said plate and having bearing parts co-acting with the parts on said plate and means on. opposite sides of the pivot for adjusting said pad, pivotally, on the base plate.
4;. An attachment for gun stocks comprising a base plate having bearing parts, a shoulder pad body member pivoted to said plate and having bearing parts co,-acting with the parts on said plate and means on one of the pivotally connected members having a spherical bearing on the other member for adjusting said body member, pivotally, on the base plate.
5. An attachment for gun stocks comprising a member adapted to be rigidly secured to the stock, a member pivoted intermediate its ends to said first named member, and screw threaded adjustable pins mounted on one of and disposed between the pivotally connected members and engageable with the other member for bodily adjusting one of the members on the other.
6. An attachment for gun stocks comprising a member adapted to be rigidly secured to the stock, a member pivoted intermediate its ends to said first named member, and screw threaded adjustable pins mounted on one of and disposed between the pivotally connected members and having a spherical bearing on the other member for bodily adjusting one of the members on the other.
7. An attachment for gun stocks comprising a member adapted to be rigidly secured to the stock, a member pivoted intermediate its ends to said first named member, and adjustable pins mounted on one of'and disposed between the pivotally connected members and having a spherical bearing on the other member for adjusting one of the members on the other.
8. An attachment for gun stocks comprising a base-plate arranged to be rigidly atfixed to the rear end of a solid stock and having a bearing part at substantially the center thereof, a shoulder pad having bean ing parts at substantially its center coat-ting with the bearing parts on said base-plate, and a transverse pivot connecting thebearing parts of the base-plate and of the shoulder pad, and screw threaded means disposed on opposite sides of the pivot for bodily adjusting said shoulder pad, said means cooperating with each other to retain the shoulder pad in adjusted positionf In witness whereof, I have hereunto setmy hand this 3rd day of November, 1921.
GEORGE H. MARTIN.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 1st day of October, i921.
ALBERT V. Ali-NERD.
