Description

Jam,
F. M. MORTON REMOVA'BLE CHECK VALVE Filed Nov. 25 1921 Y@ @lt/tow uo @www Patented Jan. 8, 1924.
y OFF-lee FRANKMZMORTONY, or' PHENIX crriyarlanaiuia. i
nnirovannn v'ALv'L yapplication 'mea-November 25g-'1921. serial-ina.nasse of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Removable Check Valves; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe 1nvention, such as will enab-le others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and j use the same.
My invention relates to improvements .1n check valves designed primarily for use 1n connection with air compressors, and has reference more particularly to valves which are readily removable to be replaced by others or to be repaired. Numerous attempts have heretofore been made to provide a check valve which can be quickly and easily removed whenever desired, but most of these devices have employed several disconnected parts which must be separately removed and are subject to loss. It is the aim of my invention however to provide an extremely simple, yet a highly ei'icient arrangement, in which the check valve, the valve seat, the valve cage, and the closing spring for the valve are all embodied in a single unit which is bodily removable from or applicable to an air compressor, water pump or like machines.
With the foregoing and minor objects in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of an air compressor equipped with two of the valve units, the inlet valve being shown almost entirely in vertical section, while the exhaust valve is partially in elevation.
Figure 2 is an enlarged side elevation of one of the valve units removed from the compressor.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the unit shown in Fig. 2.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view.
In the drawing above briefly described, I have shown an air compressor provided with a compression chamber l, a plunger 2 movable through one side of said chamber, a crank 3 and connectin rod 4 for reciprocating said plunger, an air intake 5 and an air exhaust 6. All of these parts may be of the usual or any desired construction and conf stit'ute no I Each! paageprovided :withV fan an-nupart-off .th'ejl 'presentV invention.
lar ledge 7 and in parallel spaced relation with said ledge with a removable plate 8 held in place by cap-screws or the like 9. Interposed between each plate 8 and the ledge 7 associated therewith, is one of the improved Vvalve units 10 and since both of these units are identical, onlyone will be described in detail. l A
The valve unit 10 includes a seat 11 which is preferably in the form of a ring of L- shape cross section as show clearly in Fig. 1, said ring being here shown as provided with one or more spider arms 12 which may well have a central enlargement 18. A valve cage rests upon the seat-ring 11 and preferably consists of an end plate 14 adjacent the plate 8, and a suitablenumber of legs 15 integral with said plate 14 and having their lower ends disposed in contact with the seat-ring. The cage and the valve seat are secured together, the valve and the valve Vvspring are housed within saidvcage, and all of these parts are so assembled as to form a single unit to be bodily attached o-r detached. In the present showing, a tie-bolt 16 is employ-ed to'secure the valve cage to the seat-ring, said bolt extending through the enlargement 13 of the arm or arms 12 and through the center of the plate 14. The check-valve 17 which is positioned within the cage, is slidably mounted o-n and guided by the tie-bolt 16 and the closing spring 18 for said valve surrounds said bolt, one end of said spring acting against the valve while its other end reacts against the plate 14.
When applying the valve unit 10, the plate 8 is removed, said unit is inserted into the machine, the seat-ring 11 is properly positioned upon the ledge 7, the plate 8 is again applied, and a number of set-screws 19 which pass through said plate are tightened so as to securely hold the unit in place. Whenever it is necessary to remove any part of the valve mechanism for repairing or to entirely replace the unit by an undamaged unit while repairs are being made, the opsoY eration just described is,.o f course, reversed ably followed, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous changes may he made.
I claim: y
A removable ehec-k valve .unit comprising a valve cage having a head plate and` elonf gated amis extending yfrom said head plate, a valve seat engaging the free ends of said arms and having a central opening'an'd'luid passages about the central. opening, :a con,- neoting bolt extending axially of the cage and passing through the` center ofthe head plate and through theoentral opening of Vvhead plate and valve seat,
f my hand.
said valve seat `to securely hold the valve seat in Contact with said armsa check valve freely slidable upon said anda spring coiled ahoutvsaid bolt having one yend engagin said head plate and the othei` engaging sai cheek valve to yie-ldably hold the check valve in engagement with said valve seat and 20 close the-fluid passages thereof.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set FRANKM. MORTON. Y
