Description
Patented Jan. 8, 1924.
UNITED STATES GEORGE S. BLAKESLEE, F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DISHWASHING APIPARATUS.
Application led September 10,- 191. Serial No. 253,390.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. BLAltasLlaEv a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dish Washing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had tothe accompan ing drawings.
Mly invention relates to apparatus for washing dishes and has for its object to provide certain improvements by which the washin of dishes will be more eiiiciently accomplis ed. yMy present improvements have to do more particularly with washing machines in which the dishes are washed, while contained in a suitable receptacle or basket, by means of water thrown violently upon and across the basket, the wash water being taken from a tank below the baskets by means of a paddle wheel driven in any suitable way. Machines of this general construction are well-known and are highly efficient in many respects, but in washing certain kinds of dishes, such as plates, it has been found that when the plates are packed in the basket, usually edgewise, the exposed surfaces of the plates at the ends of the basket arenot properly washed because the inclined marginal portions of the plates prevent the wash water from forcibly impinging against such surfaces and consequently they are not scoured. My present invention has to do with means for overcoming this defect and it consists in providing suitable deflectors arranged to cooperate with the water throwing mea-ns to direct the wash water, and also the rinsing water,
against the outer surfaces of the end plates or the exposed surfaces of other dishes in like situation so that such exposed surfaces will be thoroughly cleansed.
in the accompanying drawings:
Fig. l is a perspective view, partly broken away, illustrating a plate-holding basket having my improvements applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section through a washing machine having a paddle wheel for throwing wash water upon the dishes to be washed.
Referring to the drawings,4. indicates the machine as a whole, said machine comprising a water holding tank 5, longitudinal tracks extendin -with respect to the axis of over the tank and adapted to support the dish holdingr baskets as they pass through the machine, and a paddle wheel 7 at one side of the tracks 6 and having blades 8 which take u water from the tank andthrow it upon an across the dishes to be Washed. The machine may be of the usual. type in which the tank is divided into washing and rinsing compartments, each having a paddle wheel such as that shown 1n Fig. 3.
9 indicates the dish holding basket, which, in the construction shown, is provided at its opposite sides and along the bottom with racks 10 adapted to engage the marginal portions of plates so that the plates are held edgewise in nested' relation to each other transversely of the basket, as illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. At its opposite ends the basket is provided with upwardly-extending frames 11-12, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The frame 11 carries a transversely disposed inclined deflector 13 which in the construction shown, is arranged .transversely the paddle wheels, and extends inward and downward toward the yexposed surface of the end plate, and in like manner the frame 12 is provided with a delector la which sustains a similar relation to the adjacent plate at the opposite end of the basket. As best shown in Fig. 2 the delector 13 is somewhat longer than the,l
deiector 111 as it is opposite the concave surface of the plate, which naturally inclines slightly away from it when the platel is supported by the racks 10. rlhe late at the other end of the basket is tippe in the same direction so that its upper portion is near the end of the basket and for that reason the deflector 14C is made somewhat shorter.
It will be. apparent from the foregoing description that the wash water thrown u on the dishes from above by the paddle wheel 7 will fall upon the deflectors 13-14 as well as upon the plates in the basket, and consequently will be directed laterally by said deflectors against the exposed surfaces of the end plates so that they will be thoroughly scoured and cleansed. The intermediate plates serve as deectors for each other so that they also are properly cleansed.
`While in the drawings li have shown the basket as provided with defiectors at its ends it will be understood that if the plates were stead of transversel arranged longitudinall or the basket int erect the detlectors would be correspon ingly located, although the construction shown is more ecient because the transversely arranged deectors do not interfere with access of the water to the dishes from the side as would be the case if one of the de'iectors were between the paddle wheel and the contents of the bashet. The broader claims hereinafter made, however, are intended to include the basket havin the deflectcrs `for the purpose describewhether such deflectors be located at the ends or at one or both sides thereof.
Whatl claim as my invention and desire to secure b Letters Patent, is
l. lin a ish washing apparatus, the comloination with an open work receptacle adapted to contain the articles to be washed, of means outside of said receptacle for dischargin water upon the articles therein and de ecting means carried by said receptacle for dlrecting the water laterally against articles in said receptacle.
2. lin a dish washing apparatus, the comhination with a rectangular receptacle adapted to contain the articles to be washed, of means outside of said receptacle for discharging water upon the articles therein, and a transversely disposed deflector carried hy said receptacle opposite one end portion thereof for directing the water laterally against the article in said receptacle adjacent to said deector.
3. lin a vdish washing apparatus, the combination with'an openwork receptacle adapted to contain the articles to be washed, of means Vat one side of said receptacle for discharging water upon the articles therein,"
anda deilector carried b f said receptacle at one en d portion thereo for directing the water laterally against the article in said receptacle adjacent to said delector.
4f. lin a dish washing apparatus, the combination with an openwork receptacle adapted to contain the articles to be washed, of means outside of said receptacle for discharging water upon the articles therein, and a dedector mounted on the upper portion of said receptacle for directing the aandoen water laterally against the contents of the receptacle. I
5. lin a dish washing apparatus, the com bination with a tank, means above the water in said tank for supporting a receptacle containin the articles to he washed, and a paddle weel at one side of said ta arranged to throw water transversely thereof upon and across the articles .contained in such receptacle, of a receptacle adapted to contain the articles to be washed, Aand a deliector arran ed transversely of the axis of the paddle w eel to direct the water thrown by said paddle wheel longitudinally of the tank and against the contents of said receptacle.
6. lin a dish Washing apparatus, the oombination with a tank, and a paddle wheel having its axis disposed longitudinally of said tank for throwing water transversely thereof over and down upon the articles to be washed, of means for' supporting said articles, and a deector having its upper surface arranged transversely of the axis of the paddle wheel to direct water thrown by said paddle wheel longitudinally of the tank towardl such articles.
7. lin a dish-washing machine, the combination with a tank, means above the water in said tank for supporting a Areceptacle contanin the articles to be washed, and a paddle w eel having its axis disposed longitudinally of said tank for throwing water upon and across the articles contained in said receptacle, of a receptacle adapted to contain the articles to be washed, and a deiiector carried by said receptacle and arranged transversely of the axis of the paddle wheel tor directing the water thrown by said paddle wheel laterally against the contents of said receptacle.
8. A plate holding basket comprising an open-work structure having means for supporting plates standing on edge, and having an inclined transversely disposed de- Hector at the upper part of one end thereof for directing water laterally against the adjacent plate in said basket.
