DEVICE FOR FINISHING CONCRETE PAVEMENTS.
Application filed April 15, 1922. Serial No. 553,008.
To all whom it many concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER L. ,ASHMQRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Macon, in the county of and State of Georgia, have invented certain and [useful Improvements in Devices for Finishing Concrete Pavements; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,fs uch as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This inventionrelates to devices for tamping and finishing concrete paye'mentaand more particularly to' an improvement upon the deviceshown and described in Patent No. 1,364,604 issued to mejand H. R. Powell, jointly, on January 4, 1921 i T Pr a y object fy nvent o i to provide a simple, inexpensive and eilicient device of the character referred to, which the vibrations of an engine or motor are utilized in producing the desired ta ping effect upon freshly laid soft, plasticconcrete or upon soft plastic-concrete upon which has been spireadior'east a thin layer of coarse aggregate as used in the construction of road beds and street pavements or the like.
The invention will first be hereinafter more particularly described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, which are to be taken as a part of this specification, and then pointed out in theclaims at the end of the description.

5. A device for finishing concrete pavements and the like comprising a pair of rollers, a pressure-plate of substantially rectangular form arranged between said rollers, a vibrator mounted upon said pressure-plate, and means for pulling the device over the surface of the concrete and thereby raising the pressure-plate, together with springs for automatically raising the rollers and simultaneously lowering the pressure-plate when the pull upon the device is released.
6. A device for finishing concrete pavements and the like comprising a pair of rollers, a pressure-plate of substantially rectangular form arranged between said rollers, a vibrator mounted upon said pressureplate, and means for pulling the device over the surface of the concrete and thereby raising the pressureplate, together with springs for automatically raising the rollers and simultaneously lowering the pressure-plate when the pull upon the device is released; said pulling and raising and lowering means being operable from either front or rear of the machine.
7. In a device of the character described, a pressure-plate arranged between a pair of rollers each having its bearings in a pair of levers fulcrumed on said pressure-plate at one side thereof and extending toward the other side, said pressure-plate having means thereon for imparting a vibrating pressure to a mass of concrete on which it may rest, and having a pair of swinging levers mounted thereon and provided with short arms which extend in the same direction as said first mentioned levers, the long arms of the latter being flexibly connected with the short arms of said swinging levers so that movement thereof in either forward or backward direction will cause said rollers to be lowered, thereby raising said pressure-plate,
together with means for automatically lowstructed of sheet metal in substantially rectangular form and having a vibrator thereon, said pressure-plate being arranged between two rollers which extend lengthwise thereof, each roller being journaled in a pair of levers fulcrumed on said pressure-plate, a swinging lever mounted on said pressureplate near each end having cross-arms flexibly connected with said first named levers. so that said rollersv will be lowered and said pressure-plate simultaneously raised when said swinging levers are moved in either forward or backward direction, and means for automatically raising said rollers and lowering the pressure-plate when said swinging levers are released.
9. A device for finishing concrete pavements and the like, comprising a pressureplate arranged between a pair of rollers and having a vibrator mounted thereon, each of said rollers having bearings on a pair of levers fulcrumed on said pressure-plate for raising and lowering the rollers and simultaneously lowering or raising the pressureplate, a swinging lever carried by said pressure-plate near each end having a pull cord attached thereto, and flexible connections between said swinging levers and said rollercarrying levers, whereby both rollers are lowered and the pressure-plate raised by pulling upon said cord, whereby the device may be moved step by step over the surface of soft, plastic concrete under treatment, and means for raising the rollers and lowering the pressure-plate when the pull upon the cord'is released.
