WITNESSES I INVENTOR Jaw/A 26,
A TTORNEYS Patented Jan. 8, 192 4.
JEROME J. MILLER, OF GHADRON, NEBRASKA.
comrotmn TOOL.
Application filed April 4,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEROME J. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chadron, in the county of Dawes and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compound Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates generally to compound tools, and more particularly-to a device having for its primary function the sharpening of pencils and at the same time cleaning and scraping the finger nails, my object being the provision of an implement of this general nature capable of effectively utilizing old safety razors and the like whereby to insure a keen cutting edge, and having means to detachably hold such a blade in order that it may be readily and easily changed from time to time as the condition of its cutting edge or edges renders the use of a new blade desirable.
As a. pencil sharpener my invention proposes a body having side gripping faces whereby it may be readily held between the thumb and forefinger and having a blade receiving surface together with an undercut shoulder along one or both sides of its surface, the shape of the latter preferably necessitating fiexure of a blade, and further proposes an arrangement wherein this body has a lengthwise tapering bore adjacent to one side of the blade receiving surface and opening therealong and therethrough adjacent to the undercut shoulder, a portion of the latter of which is removed for the major portion of the length of the boreso as not to interfere with the cutting operation u on insertion of a pencil within the bore an itsrotation against the cutting blade.
As a convenient implement for cleaning and scraping the finger nails my invention proposes an extension in connection with the body below its blade receiving surface so disposed that a blade properly located on the surface will overlie the extension, this extension having side grooves through which a finger nail may be-passed against the cutting edge of the blade, and also having extending scraping lips at one side of the nail receiving groove adapted to extend beneath the nail and clean the same while it is scraped against the blade edge.
In the accompanying drawing which illus- 1923. Serial No. 629,871.
trates my present invention and forms a part of this specification, I
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tool as a Whole,
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof,
Figure 3 is a vertical cross section taken substantially on line 3-3 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is an end view showing a slightly modified form.
Referring now to these figures and particularly to Figures 1, .2 and 3 my invention proposes an implement including a body generally in the form of a rectangular block 10, provided with oppositely disposed concave portions 11 at the sides thereof, which concave portions are preferably knurled as shown in order that the implement as a whole may be readily grasped and held between the thumb and forefinger in use.
In its upper and lower faces, the block 10 is provided with blade receiving surfaces 12, and along opposite sides of these surfaces are undercut shoulders 13 so that a blade of the double edge type indicated at 14 will, when dispose-d upon a blade receiving surface, have its opposite cutting edges securely held beneath the undercut shoulders, it being contemplated that the blade receiving surfaces will be curved, preferably convexly curved as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 although this curvature may be concat e as indicated at 15 in Figure 4. It is also contemplated that at spaced points along the centers thereof, the blade receiving surfaces will have threaded bores for the reception of fastening screws and'the like 16 for passage through the blades 14 disposed thereon, although while apparently vnecessary in the case of the concave surfaces 15 of Figure 4, these fasteners 16 are not essential to the support of the blade 14 upon the convex surfaces as in Figures 1, 2 and 3.
Lengthwise thereof and extending therein from one end, the block 10 has pencil receiving and guiding bores 17 arranged so as to open for the full length thereof through the blade receiving surfaces immediately beneath the undercut shoulders 13, the latter of which are cut away intermediate their ends as at 18 for the major portion of the lengths of the pencil receiving and iding bores 17 so as not to interfere with t e free cutting of the pencil as it is rotated within any one of the bores against the adjacent edge of the blade 14 and so as not to interfere with the free discharge of the chip. lin these various respects except as to the mere curvature of the blade receivin surfaces, the implement of Figure 4 is lifie that of Figures 1, 2 and 3.
' For the purpose of cleaning and scraping the finger nails, the block 10 has an extension 19 at one end, between the blade reeeiving surfaces so disposed that the blade will at one end overlie the upper and lower faces of such extension and will particularly overlie at their side cutting edges the side grooves 20 with which this extension is formed for the purpose of receiving the finger nails, and in order that the finger nails may thus be guided transversely across the blade edges and be scraped thereby. Along the outer sides of its grooves 20, the extension 19 has outstanding lips-21 adapted to extend beneath the finger nail as it is moved within the adjacent groove 20 in order that the nail may thus be cleaned as it is scraped.
lit is 'to be noted in particular'that my invention is thus adapted to utilize discarded safety razor blades, more especially those of the double edge type, and to receive and support such blades in a manner so that the suficiently keen edges thereof will'be presented for the cutting of the wood and lead of pencils during the sharpening operation, and also in such manner that the blades, when becoming too dull for the purposes of the invention, may be readily removed and other blades substituted therefor.
I claim:
1. A pencil sharpener including a body having a pencil receiving and guiding bore and a blade receiving surface along and through one side-0f which the bore opens, said body having undercut shoulders at opposite sides of its said blade receiving surface, cut away intermediate the ends thereof glon'g the ma orportion of the length of said ore.
2A. pencil sharpener including a body having a blade. receiving surface and undercut shoulders along and above the opposite sides of said surface, and also having pencil receiving and guiding bores at spaced points, opening therealong through opposite sides of theblade receiving surface and beneath said shoulders, said shoulders being cut away major portions of said bores as and for the purpose set forth. JEROME J. MLLER.
