Description

Patented Jan. 8, H224.
UNITED STATES ORVILLE E. SHIRLEY, OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH.
EDUCATIONAL DEVICE.
Application filed February 10, 1923. Serial No. 618,245.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORVILLE E. SHIRLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Salt Lake City and State of Utah, have invented new and useful Improvements in Educational Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is in the nature of an educational device although it may likewise be considered as a sort of game or toy; and the object is to provide an apparatus primarily calculated to improve the memory and perceptive powers.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device with the shutter raised for exposing the characters on the rolls.
Figure 2 is a similar view with the shutter dropped to cover the characters on the rolls.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal, vertical section.
In carrying out this invention a suitable box or case 1 is provided, having a window 2 in one end thereof and rollers 3 and i j'ournaled transversely inside the box at each end, one of the rollers, as 3, being directly aligned with the window 2. The rollers 3 and 4 have each one end extended through the side of the box and cranks 5 and 6 are attached at these ends for turning the rollers. The box is provided with a hinged lid 7, hinged at 8, and a shutter 9 depends from the "free end of the lid and is adapted to close down inside the .box between the roller 3 and the window 2. A. strip of tape 10, of
paper, cloth, or any suitably flexible material is attached at its two ends to the two rollers 3 and et, and is wound upon these rollers. This strip of paper is covered with numbers, words, pictures of objects of any kind, or characters of any kind or sort whatsoever, as may be desired, and it is obvious that as the rollers are turned by the cranks of a person operating the apparatus. In the present drawing a series of letters b-fk n-m and figures 24578 are shown on the tape as revealed through the window, but it is understood that these letters and figures are merely illustrative of the purpose of the device, and any other marks or characters or configurations may be employed.
In using this device the shutter 9 is raised for a pre-determined space of time to enable the pupil or other person operating the device to obtain a sight of the characters revealed through the window 2; the shutter is then dropped, and the pupil undertakes to recall the characters, objects, figures or words which he saw through the window. It. is obvious that this sort of practice is strongly calculated to improve the powers of perception and memory.
While I have herein described a certain specific method of constructing and assembling the elements of my invention, it is understood same may be varied in minor details, not departing from the spirit of my invention as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
A device of the character described, com prising a box having awindow in one end; two rollers transversely journaled in the box, one at each end; a configured tape on the rollers; a lid hinged to the open top side of the box; a shutter depending from the free end of the lid and adapted to close down into the box between the window and the adjacent roller; and means for rotating the rollers.
