IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR DETACHING HORSES.

Specification forming part ofLetters Patent No. 147,961, dated February 24, 1874; application filed September 20, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be' it known that I, Ronr. NEsBrTT, of Blairsville, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Releasing Whittletrees; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings inaking a part of this specification, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon.

lhe object of this invention is to improve releasing devices for whiftletrees, as will be hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawing, A represents the wooden portion of the whiietree, which is recessed and longitudinally perforated for receiving the releasing device. B B represent two metallic sheaths or ferrulcs, which are tted upon the ends of the wooden portion A, and have loops or eyes a a formed on their outer extremities. G C represent two bolts, which play longitudinallyP inthe whiffletrees, and extend through the ends of the sheaths, so as to abut against the outer ends of the loops a a, and hold therein the ends of the traces. These bolts are acted on by helical springs c, which bear against cross-plates I), and operate to force the bolts outwardly against the loops a. The inner ends of these bolts are pivoted at e to curved levers D, which latter are pivoted at f to wearing-plates seated into the recesses in the whiftletree, as shown in Fig. 1. The levers D pass out through slots and are curved around, so that, when the bolts C are in their norma-l position, (shown in Figs. l and 2,) the outer ends of these levers abut vagainst the side. of the whifetree, and are there held by the springs c. These levers D are curved, for the purpose of having them out ofthe way, except when the bolts are retracted, and at the same time allowing them to be made of a proper length to ai'ord a good purchase in retracting the bolts, which is done by means of cords or chains carried up to a convenient position for the driver. It is importa-nt that the bolts-G should be locked when they are retracted to free the traces, and for this purpose the sheaths B are eut away so as to leave shoulders or catches at i 2'., behind which the levers are forced uby means of inclined springs S S. These springs act toraise the free ends of the levers D; consequently the pivotal attachments of these levers should be suiciently loose to allow the levers to rise as they are drawn back.

Spring releasing-bolts for releasing traces fromwhifiietrees are not broadly herein claimed by nie.`

Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination of rod C, actuating-lever D, springs c and S, and sheaths B, having shoulders i, applied to a Whiftletree, as and for the purposes specified.
