A suitable legend 47 is carried by the door 21 adjacent the pull hook 32, giving instructions for the operation of said hook, and suitable enclosing structure is provided for said hook, its containing recess 26 and the portion of the outer surface of the door 21 which carries said legend 47. Said structure comprises the frame 42, which is hinged at 43, to the door 21, is normally retained in closed position by engagement of the latch spring Mcarried by said door with a latch strike plate carried -by said frame, and carries the handle 46 by means of which it may be conveniently opened'and closed.

The transparent panel 48 is mounted in the frame 42, said panel being secured in adapted to engage sa d plate in a grooves 49 in the bottom and side walls of the opening enclosed by said frame (see Figs. 8 and 4:). Said panel is so positioned and of such form as to enable the hook 32 and the le end 4:? to be readily viewed therethrough.

In accordance with one of the more specific aspects of this invention, the material of the panel 48 should be such as to render it nonrangible in the ordinary sense, to the end that it cannot be so shattered as to be likely to cause fragments thereof to find lodginent where they might injure the hand of anyone having occasion to actuate hook 32. For this purpose, it has been found desirable to em loy a transparent variety of a material w ich, in many respects, is like what is known as pyralin or celluloid.

In accordance with a broader aspect of this invention, it will be evident that other features thereof may be advantageously employed in connection with a more readily frangible material, such as glass, because it is reasonable to assume that even a glass panel would not ordinarily be broken when a signal was transmitted from a box equipped with an attachment constructed in accordance with this invention, except as to the nontrangibility of the transparent panel.

L lln applying this invention to existing signal boxes, it is merely needful to remove the oresent door and apply in place thereof a suitable door comprising a signal box attachment constructed in accordance with this invention. lit is believed that the foregoing description will make obvious to those skilled in this art the manner oi embodying this invention in signalboxes in course of manufacture.

The operation of the attachment shown by thedrawings and hereinbefore described in detail is as follows:

When it is desired to cause the transmission of a signal,the hinged section of the frame 42 should be swung upon its hinges 43 from its normal closed position, by means of the handle d6, so as toe give access to the pull hook 32; and said hook should there upon be depressed in the usual manner. Said hinged section may then be returned to its closed position, thus restoring its normally effective relationship to the recess 26,

Obviously, other structures may be devised which will embody certain or all of the features of this invention. The foregoing detailed. description and the accompanying drawings should therefore be considered as illustrative rather than in a limiting sense;'and what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is: v
