GEORGE E. LOOMIS, OF UTlQA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-WHEELS.
V Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.147,951, dated February 24, 1874; application filed January 5, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. Looms, of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in OarWVheels; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, with letters of reference being marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
My invention is an improvement in the manner of constructing car-wheels so as to relieve them, as well as the road-bed, in a large degree, from vertical or oblique strain, enhancing thereby their durability and usefulness. To this end I employ, as a casingorpacking to the axle, a ring of elastic material, which yields to an undue pressure, and thereby affords relief to the axles, as well as the flanges of the wheels. Another feature of my invention is the extra depth given to the wheel, to offer increased bearing to the axle, to assist in accomplishing the above-named object.
Figure l is an outer elevation of car wheel Fig. 2 is a Vertical section.
The body of the wheel D D, and thread H H, with plates G G attached by bolts or rivets z. t i c, are for the purpose of holding the rubber G O, or other elastic material, in place, so
gether and tight against the plates. The body of the wheel will be made in a substantial manner, and harder, if necessary, than those now in use, the object of which is to prevent the strain on the axles while passing around a curve or over frogs and switches, and ease the jar that is now thrown on the carriage and axles. By my invention or improvement the strain or shocks upon the flange K, caused by the cross-motion or swagging of the carriage, will be eased or cushioned at E E, which will prevent breaking of, wheels or journal-boxes, and also the bending of axles and breaking of frogs and switches, and ease the heavy shocks, which have a tendency to loosen the spikes and leave the rails unprotected. The slots 1 P P are for the purpose of holding the hub from turning, by pins attached to the adjust able hub B B, fitted loosely in the slots P l P, so as to allow the necessary spring without wearing the pins, and relieve the rails and running-gear connected with the carriage.
What I claim as new and my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,.is
In a car-wheel the elastic ring (J surrounding the hub B, and confined by the metallic plates N N, which are held in place by the plates G G, all combined, as described and shown, for the purpose set forth.
GEO. P. LOOMIS.
