Description

J. W. KEENE.
Carriers for Magazine Fire-Arms. No.147,947, Patented Feb. 24,1874.
f? Jmm;
, IMPR To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,Jo11N W. KEE E, of
Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improved Carrier for Magazine Fire-Arms;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings making part of this specification, and to the letters and figures marked thereon.
My invention relates to certain improvements in carriers for magazine fire-arms; and it consists in a rod or bar, having a carrier on its front end, and its rear end pivoted about on a line with the bottom of the bore of the barrel, and at such point in rear of the carrier-well as to cause but a slight difference between the planes in which the carrier rests when elevated and when depressed; said rod being combined with an elbow-lever for raising and lowering it by the engagement of the upright arm of the elbow-lever with a groove, slot, or depression in the belt or other attach ment, so that when thefront end of the lever is elevated the cartridge is presented in a direction parallel with the axis of the barrel.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side View of my invention, with the carrier depressed. Fig. 2 is a similar view, with the carrier elevated.
A represents a portion of the guard-plate or other part of the breech of a gun, from which rises a stud or block, b, in which is pivoted, at a point on a line with the bottom of the bore of the barrel, the rear end of a straight lever, G, which has on its front end a cartridge-carrier, D, either made in one piece with the lever, or attached afterward, as may be preferred. OVEMENT IN CARRIERS FOR MAGAZINE FIRE-ARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,947. dated February 24, 1874; application filed December 17, 1873.
CASE A.
oted in lugs f on the guard-plate A. The front end of the elbow-lever E has an eye, g, formed in it, through which the straight lever passes. The upright portion of the elbow-lever extends upward and engages with a slot, groove, or depression in the bolt of the gun or other attachment, so that when the bolt is drawn back to open the breech, the front end of the 'slot, groove,'or depression strikes the upright arm of theelbow-lever and forces itbackward, throwing the front end upward, and raising the carrier to the position shown in Fig. 2, so as to present the cartridge in a direction parallel with the axis of the barrel and in line with the bore. The elbow-lever may be provided with a spring, or other suitable device, for holding up the carrier until the cartridge is transferred to the chamber of the barrel. 7
This carrier is adapted to hammer or lever guns as readily as to bolt-guns.
, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A carrier for a magazine firearm, consisting of a rod or bar having a carrier-plate on its front end, and having its rear end pivoted about on a line with the bottom of the bore of the barrel, and at such point in rear of the carrier-well as to cause but a'slight difference between the planes in which the carrier rests when elevated and when depressed, said rod being combined with an elbow-lever for raising and lowering it by the engagement of its upright arm with a groove, slot, or depression in the bolt or other attachment, so that when sented in a direction parallel with the axis of the barrel, substantially as shown and de scribed.
