WHEEL.
Application filed August 28, 1922. Serial No. 584,684.
To c/.ZZ 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT B. GrLLn'r'rE,
a citizen of the United States, residing atV Grand iapids, county of Kent, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wieels, of which the following is a specification.
rIhis invention relates to improvements in wheels. It relates more particularly to in proveinents in wheels adapted for use on trucks on cement floors or pavement, although the wheel is, of course, capable of other uses.
The main object of the invention is to provide a wheel which is very durable and at the same time substantially noiseless.
It is an object, also, in producing this wheel largely to make use of waste cuttings of wood.
A further object is to provide a special construction of hub or center that lends itself particularly to the utilization of Waste cuttings.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of the invention by the devices and means described in the following' specification. rlihe invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of the invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Fig. I is an elevation view of a wheel embodying the features of my invention.
F ig. II is a detail transverse sectional view through the center of the wheel on a line 2 2 of F ig. I.
F ig. III is a detail view of a modification of my improved wheel.
F ig. IV is an enlarged detail sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Fig. III, showing the construction of wheel with the specially improved center or hub.
In the drawing the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines and similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The numbered parts of the drawing will be considered by their numbers. 1 is the hub center of my improved wheel which may be made up of opposed flanged parts of liber or of metal or any anti-friction material where it is desired to have the wheel revolve on an axle. Radially disposed about this hub between the flanges thereof are spolrelike blocks of wood 2, with the longitudinal liber radially disposed, preferably each block an equal segment of the circle making up the wheel, the broad end of the wedge being outward. The wheel is thus solid.
These blocks are disposed in contact with the hub center and an annular, square or rectangular groove 3 is cut therein on both sides. A flanged ring 4, having a face flange 5 on the face of the wheel and a right angle flange 5 disposed in the said annular groove, is the retaining means for the said radial blocks. 'Ihese rings are heated and thus expanded and put in place, and thus put tension on the wheel after the manner of a tire set on the periphery of the usual wood wheel. The opposite flanges are retained in place by the cross rivet 7, as shown in F ig. II. Bolts might be used but they rivets are preferred.
In Fig. III I show a modification of my improved wheel in which a pair of wedges 8 are inserted side by side between straightsided pieces 9.
The hub 10 is here made preferably larger, and is preferably made of ply wood with the outer layers ll projecting into flanges, secured particularly to the blocks 9 by nails 2. The body of this hub could, of course, be made of pieces of board or plank instead of ply wood, with suitable projecting flange portion on the outside. The ply wood is of special advantage on account of its great strength and because it lends itself readily to this flanging. This modified method makes especially effective use of waste pieces of flooring, thereby greatly economizing the production of the wheel.
I desire to claim the special form and also to claim the invention broadly, as pointed out in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a wheel structure the combination of a suitably flanged hub center, radially disposed wedge-shaped blocks of wood, annular grooves therein, a ring with right-angle flange and face flange shrunk into the said groove, and a cross rivet to retain the same in place, as specified. j
2. In a wheel structure, the combination of radially disposed wedge-shaped blocks of blocks of Wood arranged radially from the said hub, and intermediate bloexs with par-V allel sides disposed between said Wedgeshaped blocks, and means for retaining` said blocks in position comprising a ring shrunk upon said blocks, said bloels being conformed to receive said ring With the ends ot the blocks projecting beyond the ring` to provide a tread.
4. ln a Wheel struoture, the combination With a suitable hub center, of Wedge-shaped blocks of Wood arranged radially from. the said hub, andvintermediate blocks with pai'- allel sides disposed between said vvedgef shaped blocks, an annular groove ormed in one face of said blocks, anda ring disposed therein to hold the blocks in position.
5. lin a Wheel structure, the combination of a hub center of ply Wood, the outer layers of which project to forni flanges, Wedgeshaped blocks of Wood formed With the grain running longitudinally thereof arranged radially frointhesaid hub disposed between the said flanges, and means 'for re taining said blocks comprising a ring shrunk upon said blocks, said blocks being conformed to receivel the ring with the ends of the blocks projecting beyondvit providing` a tread. 1
6. ln a Wheel structure, the combination with a suitable hub Center, of Wedge-shaped blocks of Wood j'ogmed With the grain runningv longitudinally thereof ar 1anged radially from said hub,v and means for retaining said blocks ooniprisinga ring shrunk. upon the blocks, said blocks being conformed to receive said ring projecting beyond the ring to provide a tread.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
