COMBINED FIREARM LAND vGRILNAJIJE DISCHABGEB.
Application filed November 8, 1923. Serial No. 673,143.
(FILED 'UNDER THE ACT 0F MARGH 3, 1883, 22 STAT. L., 625-.)
To all whom t may concern: Be it known that I, SAMUEL WILEY, aclti- Y zen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of.
Metuchen, count of Middlesex, and -State of New Jersey, ilave invented an Improvement in Combined Firearms and Grenade` the provision of a fire arm which may be usedA for all ordinary urposes and which may be readily converted into a grenade discharger.
A further object is the provision of a fire arm in which means will be provided in the butt thereof for receiving and discharging a grenade or other projectile.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel arrangement and combinationof parts and in the details of construction hereinafter def scribed and claimed, it being understood that chan es in the precise embodimentl of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departin from the s irit of the' invention. A pre erred embodiment of my'invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
1 is a view in sideelevation of my comblned fire arm and grenade discharger i'n use as a grenade discharger, parts being broken away; A

. for actuating the propelling charge.
vmer is a forked cam member 27 cooperate with an Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view taken at chamber 20 serves to actuate the hammer.
' which ma Referring to the drawing by numerals of reference:
I have shown at 5 a firearm which may be of any suitable type, preferably, however, the ordinary service Springfield or Enfield riiie. This lire arm is equippedr with the usual barrel or barrels 6 and with the customary trigger 7 and bolt 8. The butt 9` of the iire arm is preferably hollowed or recessed for a portion of its length as at 10 to receive la 'tubular steel jacket 11 which opens at outer end of the butt. Thisjacket is adapted to receive a grenade or other projectile 12 and a propelling charge 13 used in projecting the renade from the butt.
AAny suitable ring means may be employc;
shown, the stock of the rifle is recessed as at 14 and this recess is adapted to receive a grenade rin in 15 which reciprocates in the recess an 1n an opening :.16 formed in a headed nut 17 screwed intov the recess.- A spring 18, in the preferred embodiment of my invention, surrounds the pin 15 and is interposed between the nut 1,7 and a flange 19 formed on the pin serving to normally maintain the pin in retracted or inoperative position.
bei' 20 in which is pivotally mounted as on a pin 21 a firing hammer 22. The hammer 22 is actuated by means of a spring 23 which is coiled about the pin 21 and has one end attached to the hammer and the other end j to a wall '24 of the stock. Pivotally mounted as at 25 on an ear 26 formed on the hamrovided with depending lu s or tines 28 a apted to tions 29 formed on the hammer for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. The de. pending lugs 28 are rounded where they extend above the projections 29 so as to ermit free swinging movement of the mem er 27 in one direction with res ect to the hammer.
A trigger 30 pivotal y mounted in the This trigger is formed with a handle 31 be manipulated by hand, or, to which if csired, may be attached a lanyardV and is formed with a lower cam surface 32 adapted to coo eratc with the cam surface 33 formed on t e` member 27. l The fire arm, which forms the subjectof rlhe stock is further provided with a ehami to butt against projecmy invention, may be used as an ordinary service piece inthe usual manner, the trigger 7 and the bolt 8 being used to propel the customary service projectile from the barrel 6. If, however, it is desired to use this piece as a discharger for a enade or other projectile of different ca iber from that propelled from the bore 6, the grenade or other projectile is inserted together withfa pro-y pelling discharge into the tubular member 11 fixed in the butt. The direction of fire is accordingly changed. With the ordinary service projectile the projectile will be expelled from the muzzle; when a grenadeor -similar projectile is to be fired the same will be projected from the butt. The grenade or other projectile and a propellant charge, will, as above stated, be placed in the butt. The trigger being in inoperative position, when it is desired to fire the grenade or other projectile the trigger will be swung inwardly so that the cam surface 82 will cooperate with the cam surface formed on the member 27 to move the hammer, the desired distance against the action of the spring 23, `this spring in the meantime storin up energy so that when the cam surface o the trigger no longer has a bearing on the cam surface of the member 27, the hammer is thrown violently rearwardly striking the pin 15 forcing the same against the action of the spring 18 rearwardly in the chamber 14: and
through the nut 17 to strike the primer ca stock.
If desired, when the lire arm is to be used as an ordinary service piece, the opening formed in the butt' at the rear end on the tubular member 11 may be closed by any suitable type of closure member. Preferably, however` this closure member will serve two purposes. As shown, a member 35 may be provided, which in the preferred -embodi- `ment of my invention, is formed with a split eleeve' 36 adapted to be received within the jacket 11 when the piece is to be used as a service wea on and to surround the barrel 6 at the muzz e end thereof when the piece is to be used as a grenade or other projectile discharge For retaining the closure member in position in this latter use the sleeve portion is formed with opposed lugs 37 adapted to receive a bolt 38 which cooperimams ates with a butterfly nut serving to fasten the sleeve securely upon the barrel 6 the foresight 4c() being disposed in the opening formed by thelsplit. The closure member 35 is formed with an extension 39 which normally covers the butt in service use and which serves as a foot piece when the fire arm is used as a grenade or other projectile discharger.
1f desired, to prevent scratching of the muzzle, the butt plate may be supplied with a rubber pad 41 against which the muzzle end of the barrel may rest.
While Ythe closure is preferably formed in the manner described, any other suitable type of closure may be employed, and, similarly,
the closure maybe attached to any desired portion of the riie barrel.
As heretofore stated, the .discharging mechanism in the butt may be employed to propel a grenade or any other suitable type of projectile therefrom. The opening in the butt ymay be in any desired portion thereof and the direction of iire may accordingly be altered.
While my device is preferably employed with a rifle or similar weapon, it is by no means intended to limit my invention to this use in as much as the butt of the ordinary service pistol may be constructed so as to function as a grenade discharger in the manner described above.
The firing mechanism employed in connection with the grenade discharger may be of any suitable type and I do not intend to limit my invention to use only with firing mechanism ,of the type described.
