To allwhomitma concern:
Be it known that i, Homan (levantar a citizen of the United States, residin at lios Angeles, county of Los Angeles, tate of (California, have invented new and useful improvements inl Chair Construction, of which the following is a specification.
rihis invention relates to the construction of chairs, vdavenports, an'd like furniture, hereinafter referred to as chairs.
llt'is the object of the invention to provide a device of the'character set forth, which is adapted to be swung open from its normal position, in order that a removable cover may be applied to the furniture, the edges of the cover being fastened to the chair at portions thereof which are normally'con cealed, but which are ex osed when the structure is swun open. this arrangement, when the lc air is agaln swung to its normal 'osition after the cover has been placed t ereon, Athe iastenn connections between the cover and the c air are `Yconcealed, thereby providing a neat and snugly tting cover for the chair.
llt is a further object of the invention lto provide means for locking the chair parts in their normal position, said locking means being readily releasable in order that the chair. may be swung open for applying or removing the chair cover.
Further objects of the invention will be i readily understood from the following description of the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig l is a perspective view oi a chair constructed in accordance with the invention, one side of the chair being swung open', and the removable cover being in place upon the chair. i
Fig@ is a vertical section on the line 2 2 i of Fig. i.
Figs. 3 and d `are detail sectionson the lines 3 3 and d-d oi Fig. l..
Fig. 5 is a section on the line oi Fig.. d.'
Fig. ti is a rear elevation ci theloching;
beruf the chair structure.
Fig. 7 is a detail section on the line T-'' of Fig. 1.. Y
in the resent exempliication of the invention, t e chair is shown as an upholf stored structure comprising back l, side armsA 2 ext/endin from the bottom to the top oi the bach,` an a separate seat. structure 3 received between the side arms against the back '1, with the base of the seat at the bottom of the back and sides.
The' side arms are hin d to the back as shown at 4, and both the aclr and sides are usual upholstered constructions, the lower portion of the back upholnery being cut away as shown at 5f in order to receive the rear portion of the seat structure beneath said upholstery, when the chair is assembled in normal position, and the lower por'- tions of the side arms being cut away as shown at 7,-in order to receive the sides of .the seat Within said recesses, when the arms to normal position forminglthe are swun assemble chair structure. 1
l'ilhe separate seat structure is a usual upholstered spring construction comprising base 3 carrying the springs d, with the usual padding 3 received over the same to form the upholstered surface of the seat.
When the partsV are assembled, the rear portion of the seat is received within recess 5, and the side arms areswuno to nor.- mal position extending forwardly from back 1. The sides oi t e seat are 'thus received within recesses 7, and the seat is supthat the seaty rovides a'sprin structure extending' all t e we Y tothe ottoni oi the chair, thereby aor, ing an ecient and dnf rable construction.
portion of the seat. It will also be noted In order to loch the swinging side arms and the seat of the chair in assembled normal position,.a bar ii is adapted to be received across the iront ci the seat with the Vends of said bar release-bly connected to the side arms 2. -k
As an instance et this arrangement, the lower portion oi the iront of the seat strncture is undercut so as to term the trains verse recess i2 in which the locking bar is removably received.
p The lockingconneetions for the bar comprise staples lli mounted upon the side arms Mtl will
2 within the front ends of recesses 7, and
rods 15 having hooked ends 16 adapted to engage said staples, the rods bein .mounted -on the inner face of bar 11, an
arranged for projection or retraction of said rods.
The operating means for the rods 15 are shown as plates 17 pivoted at 20 upon the bar 11. Nuts 21 project from said plates at one side of their pivots, and the rods 15 are threaded through said nuts, so as to form an adjustable connection for said rods. Lugs 22 are formed upon plates 17 at the opposite sides of their pivots, said lugs forming handles by means of vwhich the plates may be partially rotated to either project or retract the hooked connecting rods. The lugs 22 are also so positioned as to form stops against which rods 15 will abut for releasably holding the same in locking position, when the plates 17 have been rotated so as to retract the rods 15 and swing the same just beyond 'their dead centers.
lin order toguide the locking bar- 11 and to providea snug -it between the parts lo'f the chair when assembled, the posts 2a forming the ends of side arms 2, are preferably 4 recessed as shown at 24 in ordeg to receive pins 25 projecting beyond the ends of bar `11. It will be understood that bar '11 is of suitable length to fit snuglybetween the posts 2, 'and the lfront edge of the upper portion of the seat structure is preferably also of such-length as to be received between Y the posts 2a.
For this purpose the upper portions of the sides of the seat structure are slightlyl inwardly otlset at 4their front edges which aline with posts 2a, thereby providing shoulders 26- upon the sides of the seat, which are received-within recesses 7 when the parts are assembled.
Ornamental panels 27 arepreferably mounted upon the end posts of the' side arms of the'chalr, the surfaces of said end posts beneath said panels being concaved for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The panels are detachable, and for this purpose are provided with notched lockin pins 29 adapted to extend. through suitale apertures in posts 2a. The locking pins are detachably engaged by locking plates which are shown as strips 30 slidable in guideways 31 upon the inner surfaces of the end posts. The strips are notched as shown at 32, said notches cooperating with the notches 33 of the locking pins, andthe strips are yieldably moved in their guideways into position for'locking engagement, by means of springs 34. lt will be understood that the lockingv strips may be'oppositely shifted against the action of the springs, to cause Vdisengagement of the looking pins and to pernnt removal of the anels.
The upholstered chair as thus described is provided with a neat and snugly tting l -wardly over the front of the seat to the recess 12. Edge flaps or extensions 37 are provided at the sides and ends of the cover as thus described, the side fla s extending overv the sides of the seat, an the respective end flaps extendin over the rear of the seat, and against t at portion of the seatforming the upper wall of recess 12.
The cover for the back of thev chair comprises a rear Yportion 40 extending to the bot-.
tom of the chair, and a front extensionj41 adapted to extend over the upholstered sur- A face whichterminates at the recess 5.- The covers for the arms of the chair are lateral extensions of the rear portion 40 of the back cover, and comprise portions 42 received against the outer surfaces of the arms and extending to the bottom ofthe chair, and extensions 43 of the portions 42 which extend over the inner surfaces of the chair arms.
These latter extensionsterminate at` the recesses 7, but at the front of the same are continued downwardly as stri s 44 received a against posts 2. Flaps 45 at t e front edges of strips 44 and at t e front edges of portions 42 of the arm covers are recelved against the fronts of posts 2a in the concave recesses 46 provided therein.
Ed e flaps 47 are provided Aat the remaining e ges of portions 40, 41, 42, and 43 of the cover for the back and arms of the chair.
At the bottom of portions 40 and 42 of theA cover, these flaps extend over the lower edges of the back and arms and are received in recesses 50 provided in the bottoms of said back and arms. At the lower ed es of portions 41 and 43 of the cover, the aps 47 are received against the 'upholstered surfaces forming the upper Walls of recesses 5 and 7, and at the sides of extension 41, the ilaps are received over the sides'of the upholstered back of the chair, while at the rear edges ofl extensions 43, the flaps are similarly received over the rear edges of the upholstered arms of the chair.
'llhe covers as thus described are retained in position by suitable fastening connections between the chair and seat structures and the flaps 37, 45, and 47 of the covers. As an instance of this arrangement, pins 53 may project from the chair and seat structures wherever the Haps overlie the same, inorder that said aps may be readily hooked upon said pins.
ln placing the cover for the chair in posi- Hlt) intenso tion, it will be understood that bar' ll is removed so that arms 2 may be swung outwardly and the seat structure removed. The seat cover is then fastened in place as previously described, and it will be noted that when the seat is a ain placed in the chair, and the arms of t e latter are closed and locked in normal position, all of the fastening connections for the seat cover are concealed by the chair. Y
ln similar manner, when the chair has been swung open and the seat removed, the cover for the back and arms is placed in osition. rthe panels 27 are removed'in orer that deps t may be fastened in place, and the panels are then again placed in position upon the ends ot arms 2.
when ne @han is again assemblea in4 normal position, with the seat in place and the arms swan inwardly against the sides ot the seat, the astening connections for the seat and bach cover are concealed.
l have thas provided a simple chair construction which may be readily swung open to expose fastening connections for retaining a cover in position, said connections belng concealed when the chair is again closed and locked in normal sition. The chair cover may thus be titte snugly to the chair in order vto form. aA sightly and neatconstructi'on. l
While ll have illustrated and described but one ractical embodiment of the device, it-
will apparent that various changes may be made in the construction, combination. and arrangement ot parts, without depart ing from the spirit Vof the invention.
