Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. VALITON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Deer Lodge, in the county of Powell and State of Montana, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Drills, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to drills and is an improvement on the construction illustrated in my co-pending application, Serial Number 530,618 filed January 20, 1922.
' Extensive and successful use of the drill constructed in accordance with the aforesaid application revealed that the inability of the centering pin to move a substantial distance rearwardly, for the reception of the core in the body, limited the advance of the-drill and hence the cutting depth of the same, without first removing the centering device after starting the hole. a
Therefore, an important object of this in vention is to provide novel means whereby the centering pin is yieldably held in its advanced position and is released for a substantial rearward movement when the drill reaches a certain depth, thereby allowing the device to out still further.
Also the invention aims to provide a drill of the character specified having a tubular body and a shank detachably connected to the rear end thereof so that it is not necessary to core or drill out a solid piece of high speed or other expensive steel in order to form a socket in the body.
A further object is to provide a drill of the character specified which is of highly simplified construction, efficient in use and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the accompanying drawing wherein for the purposeof illustration, is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a body of the improved drill while the numeral 6 designates the shank of the same, the said shank having an exteriorly threaded attaching stem 7 which is screwed into the rear end of the tubular body. The shank 6 is also provided with an annular shoulder 8 which contacts with the rear end of the tubular body and therefore limits the movement of the attaching stem 7' into the body. l 7
It will be seen that since the drill proper is formed from two pieces of metal the body 5 may be formed from a tubular body of high speed or other steel suitable for the purpose while the shank 6 may be formed from a cheaper metal as this part is not subjected to the extreme strains to which the body 5 is subjected. Also by forming the drill from two parts either part may be replaced when necessaryf' In carrying'out the invention, the tubular body 5 is provided with a spiral slot 10 extending out through the forward end. of the body and having one end wall formed with a cutting bit 11 which cuts into themetal and thereby forms an annular cut.- Of course the cutting bit 11 is arranged in advance of the adjacent portion of the drill body and as the drill isrotated and advanced it will cut into the inetal and the shavings will be introduced into the spiral slot 10.
The drill is centered by means of a centering pin 15 having its forward end tapered ElS',l11CllC&t8Cl at 16 so thatthe same will be received in a small dent formed in the work by means of a centering punch or the like. The centering pin 15' is urged to its advancedposition by means of acoiled spring 17 which surrounds the shank 18 of the pin and has its foremost convolution received in an annular groove 19in the shank.
As illustrated in detail in F igure 2 the rearmost' convolution of thespring 17 is received within an annular groove 20in a stop member 21 of annular formation.
The stop member 21 which is of annular formation is detachably secured in the in termediate portion of the body 5 by means of a transversely extending locking pin 24 slidable through the stop member 21 and having one end portion reduced, as indicated at 26 and received within a socket 27 in the drill body.
Figure 2 illustrates that when the reduced portion 26 is received in the socket 27 the pin 24 is locked to the drill body so that the member 21 forms a stop for the rear end ofthe coiled spring 17 7 As the cutting lip advances the core formed is received in the tubular body 5 and the centering pin 15 is necessarily moved rearwardly against the tension of the coiled spring 17. However, when the shank 18 of the centering pin15 moves rearwardly a predetermined extent the same will engage a lock pin actuator 30 in the natur of a depending lug carried by the lock pin 24:. More specifically the shank 18 is formed with a cone-shaped socket 33 the wall of which will contact with the bevel edge 34- of the lock pin actuator 30 and thereby move the same laterally. Figure 2 illustrates that the lock pin is-urged into locking engagement with the drill body 5 by a coil spring 23. One side of the stop member 21 is formed with a groove or socket 63 to receive and steady the actuator 30.
hen the lock pm actuator 30 is moved laterally by the rearward movement of the centering pin the locking pin 24 will also be moved laterally of the longitudinal axis of the body as the lock pin actuator is con nected to the pin 24 through the medium of a set screw 36. With reference to Figure 5 it will be seen that the socket 27 is directly opposite the spiral slot 10 and therefore, the locking pin 24 is moved longitudinally of itself and will be received in the spiral slot 10. When the pin 24 is thus received in the spiral slot 10 the re duced portion 26 will be removed from the socket 27 and the stop member 21 is thus released for rearward movement.
The release of the stop member 21 will permit the centering pin to partake of a further rearward movement so as to allow-the cutting operation to continue. The spiral slot 10 extends to a point adjacent the rear end of the tubular body 5 and consequently the locking pin 24: and the stop member 21 .may move freely to the rear portion of the body.
As inthe case of my co-pending application the centeringpin is provided with a radial lug 40 received in the spiral slot 10 and which serves as a means for directing the shavings or cuttings laterally and prevents the shavings from entering the interior of the tubular body 5 and interfering in any manner with the coiled spring. It will.
be seen that the lug 10 not only serves as a means for directing the cuttings laterally from the body but also as a means to cause the centering pin to rotate with the body. Attention is also directed to the fact that the slot extends in the direction opposite the direction of rotation of the drill's'o that the cuttings will be freely-received in the slot.
, In carrying out the invention the slot extends entirely through the wall of the socket as illustrated in Figure 2 so the cuttings will not bind against the wall of the opening be ing drilled. By providing a slot amply large enough to receive the cuttings, the same will not be forced into binding engagement with the wall of the hole being drilled and consequently the hole will. not in any way be scored. 7
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that such minor changes in arto rotate with the body and to direct cut-.

A drill comprising a body, a centering pin arranged in the body, a coiled spring urgingthe centering pin to its advanced position, a stop member enga ed by said spring, a. holding pin carried by the stop member and adapted for locking engagement with the body, a. lock pin actuator carried by said lock pin, the rear portion of said centering pin being provided with means engaging said lock pin actuator for moving the same laterally and consequently removing the lock pin from looking engagement with the body, said body being provided with a spiral material receiving slot adapted to receive said lock pin.
6. A drill comprising a body, a centering pin arranged in the body, a coiled spring urging the centering pin to its advanced position, a stop member for one end of said spring, a holding pin carried by the stop member and adapted for locking engagement with the body, a lock pin actuator carried in said lock pin, said centering pin being provided with means engaging said lock pin actuator for moving the same laterally and consequently removing the lock pin from looking engagement with the body, said body being provided with a spiral material receiving slot adapted to receive said lockpin, and a spring engaging said lock pin actuator for urging the lock pin into engagement with the body.
7. A drill comprising a body having a spiral slot and a socket directly opposite the slot, a stop member arranged in the body, av locking pin carried by the stop member and having one end portion reduced and adapted to be received in said socket, a lock pin actuator connected to said locking pin and adapted for moving the lock pin out of said hole and into said slot, whereby to release the stop member from looking engagement with the body, and means movable in said body to operate said actuator.
8. A drill comprising a body having a slot and a socket directly opposite the slot, a stop member arranged in the body, a looking pin carried by the stop member and having one end portion reduced and adapted to be received in said socket, a lock pin actuator connected to said locking pin and adapted for moving the lock pin out of said socket and into said slot, whereby to re lease the stop member from looking engagement with the body, a centering pin arranged in the body and adapted to engage said actuator, and a coiled spring confined between said stop member and said centering pin.
9. A drill comprising a body having a slot and socket directly opposite the slot, a stop member arranged in the body, a looking pin carried by the stop member and having one end portion reduced and adapted to be received in said socket, a lock pin actuator connected to said locking pin and adapted for moving the lock pin out of said socket and into said slot, whereby to release the stop member from looking engagement with the body, a centering pin arranged in the body and adapted to engage said actuator, a coiled spring confined between said stop member and said centering pin, and a lug carried by said centering pin and received in said spiral slot.
10. A drill comprising a body having a slot and a socket opposite the slot, a stop member arranged in said body, a locking pin slidable transversely of said stop member and adapted to be received within said socket, whereby to deta-chably connect the stop member to the body, a spring arranged on said locking pin, a lock pin actuator carried by said locking pin and engaged by said spring, and a centering pin having its rear portion formed with a socket having an inclined wall adapted to engage said lock pin acauator whereby to move the same laterally, and release the locking pin from engagement with said body.
11. A tool comprising a tubular body, a centering pin movable therein, a stop member having locking means provided with an actuator, and a spring confined between said stop member and said centering pin, said actuator being in the path of travel of the centering pin and operated thereby.
