ROCKING-HORSE.
Application filed February 16, 1918, Serial No. 21,749. Renewed September 22, 192D. Serial No. 412,067.
To all 'whom t may concer/n.:
Be it known that I, HERMAN MEISTER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and
State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rocking-Horses, of
which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
The invention relates to toys and more particularly to rocking horses or hobby horses as they are sometimes called.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a toy of this kind wherein the horse is mounted upon a wheeled support which is detachably secured to therocker so that the toy may be used asa rocking horse or v as a vehiclewhich may be pushed about the floor by the child sitting on the horse.
A further object of this invention is to improve toys of this kind by providing a knockdown rocker, the parts of which can be readilyv packed into small space for ready shipment. f
members, each of which is composed of separate parts which are detachably but securely joined together and which ymay be readily placed in knocked-down condition. Another advantage 0f making the rocker members in two parts is that they may be cut so that the grain of the wood runs lengthwise and thus prevent liability of breaking ofi' the ends which happens in the case of a rocker member made in one long continuous piece.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings:l
Fig. 1 is a view of a toy horse embodying the invention taken on theY line 1--1 of Fig. 2; t
Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the device, parts being broken awayand parts being shown in section;
' Fig. 3 is a detail view of a modified form of frame connection between the rocker elements;
Fig. 4 is a section taken onthe line L1---4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a of connection between the rocker members;
detail View of a modiied form A further object of the invention `is to` provide a rocker, comprising side rocker the parts O @1.1% 0f' Fig. 6 is a detail view of another form of connection between the parts of one of the rocker members.
In `the drawings, the numeral 8 designates The end frame members 16 consist of v blocks having medially disposed elongated slots 17 therein for adjustably receiving boltsv 18 which pass through apertures 19 in the platform 9, the blocks and platform being removably secured together by said bolts provided with washers 2O and wing nuts 21. When the base or platform 9 is secured or mounted on the end frame or spacingmembers 16, it assists in rigidlyl supporting and bracing the rocker members 14. This is a very desirable feature, especially when the rocker members are con` structed of separable parts connected together. The wheeled Aplatform also funcA tions to connect and strongly brace the legs of the horse, so that the platform and horse can be removed from the rockers and used independently thereof as a wheeled toy without risk of the legs of the horse being broken in rough handling as there would be if they were not braced and connected by the base or platform. Each of these blocks is bolted to the rocker members 14 by bolts 23 passing through apertures 23.- in said blocks and apertures 25 in said rocker members and provided with nuts 26 disposed in recesses 27 in said blocks at the inner ends of the apertures 24. Y
ln the preferred construction, each of the two part rocker members 14 is made of two similai` separate parts detachably oined together by dowel pins 28 secured at the innerend to, one of the parts and fitting in apertures 29 in the inner end of the other part.
In addition to beingkbraced and connected together by the vend frame members 16, these two part rocker members are detachably' connected and braced.- through the transverse frame member 15 by means of dowel pins 30 secured to the member 15 and fitting in apertures 31 adjacent the ends or each one of the parts of the two part rocker members and by means of bolts 32 passing through apertures 33 in eacli of the parts of the rocker members and through apertures 34 in the member 15 to which they are secured by nuts 35 disposed in recesses 36 in said member It will bey seen, therefore, that the centralV block orV frame member 15 acts as a combined spacing and connecting means. The parts of each rocker member are first joined together by dowel pins 28"'a`nd apertures 29 in the inn'crends. The block 15 isnow placed in position and the joined ends of the rocker member parts are connected thereto by bolts32 and dowel pins 30,. The joined ends olf the rocker member parts are therefore `Vlrigidly and firmly connected together by most effective connecting joints while the rocker members are also firmly held in spaced relation.
I'nF ig.- 3 I have shown a somewhat different connection for securing the parts of the rock-er members together and for connecting-said spaced apart members together. In this instance the parts -of each rocker member are joined together by connecting blocks 36 and bolts 37 passing through said bioclrs and the parts of'said members, and a central frame member 38 is secured to Vsaid rocker members and said block-s 36 by bolts 39 which are disposed in the member 38 in a manner similar to that of the memberl as will be apparent from the drawings.
Instead of making the parts of the rocker members separable, I may secure them together by a hinge 40 in the side as shown in Fig. 5 or by a hinge 41 on the top as shown in Fig. 6.
In the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 4; inclusive, the parts of the rocker members are first secured together and then the rocker members are secured to the frame members 16 by the bolts 23 and to the frame members 15 or 38 by the bolts 32 or 39.
In the constructions shown in Figs. 5 and 6 asthe partsI of the rocker members are already 'secured together by the hinges, the rocker members are securedv to the frame members 15 and 16 by the bolts 23 and 32.
In either case the platform is then mounted upon the rocker frame and secured thereto by the bolts- 13 and nuts 21 though the horse may be removed from the rocker frame at any time and moved about on the wheels 12.-
As the rocker members are divided in two lengthwise of each part Vof the rocker member and thusprevent liability to breakage in shipment or'in use. Y
With this construction with the Vparts assembled the child can sit astride of the horse and rock back and forth on theplatform; or the horse may be removed from the rocker frame and the child sitting a'stri'de the horse may move around with the aid of the wheeled platform. Y n 1 Vhat I claim as my inventionnis:

A rocking horse comprising, in 'combination, a toy horse, a platform uponwhich s'a-id horse is mounted, rocker members, spacing Vblocks for maintainingy the rocker members in,V spaced relation, means for detachably securing saidv rocker members to said spacing blocks and means for detachably'securing said platform to said spacing blocks.
.6i A rocking horsecomprising, in -com' bination, a toy horse, a platformupon which said horse i's'mounted, rocker members each composed of' separable parts, means for detachably securing the parte of each rocker member together, detachable means for maintaining the rocker members in spaced relation and means for detachably securing said platform to such spacing means.
7. A rocking horse comprising, in combination, rockermembers each composed of separable parts, means for detachably joining the parts of each rocker member together, combined spacing and connecting means abutting the joined parts and detachably 'connected thereto, whereby the rocker member parts are rigidly connected together and the rocker members maintained in spaced relation, a toy horse and means for mounting said horse on said rocker members.
8. A rocking horse comprising, in combination, rocker members each composed of separable parts, means for detachably joining the parts of each rocker member together, a combined spacing and connecting lock lapping the joined parts and detachably connected thereto whereby the rocker member parts are rigidly connected together and the rocker members maintained in spaced relation, end spacing blocks detachably connected to said rocker members, a toy horse, a platform upon which said horse is mounted and means for detachably securing said platform to said end spacing blocks.
