ontrein stares LE ROY HICKS, OF LYON MGUNTAIN, NEV YORK.
PIN-PULLING DEVICE FOR DRILL SHARPENERS.
Application filed April 12, 1921. Serial No. 460,653.
T aZZ whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, LE ROY Hicks, a citi-- zen of the United States, residing at Lyon Mountain, in the county of Clinton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pin-Pulling Devices for Drill Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to apparatus for removing pins from rock drill sharpening machines, and consists in the combinations and arrangements of elements hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the accompanying claim.
The invention has for its purpose to provide a device which will eiectively remove the pin from a rock drill sharpening machine in a way which will cause no injury to the pin or machine in a quiet and easily performed manner.
A further purpose of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will enable the operator of the machine to withdraw the pin' that has been inserted for keeping open the hole in the shank while the lugs are being formed, and thereby enable the operator to increase his output.
The invention has for its further purpose to provide a machine capable of performing these functions which will take the place of the old hand and foot power pin pullers and which will not require any high degree of skill on the part of the operator.
The invention is disclosed by way of illustration in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the machine complete; and
Figure 2 is a similar view of a modied construction.
Referring to the construction in further detail and wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the diierent views shown, 3 designates a suitable support or frame having anchor lugs 4 for rendering the machine stable; and the portions 5 and 6' of said frame provide suitable guideways for the carrier or bar 7 that is slidably mounted therein. A pair of lbolts 8 or the like pass through slots formed in the carrier 7 and serve to guide the same in its movements. lt will be understood, of course, that the frame 3 may be itself supported by another frame or structure of any suitable form. The drill shank 9 here shown is of the type used on the Leynor machine and 10 designates the pin thereof that is to be removed.
The device per se for removing the pin consists of a cam or clamp 11 that is pivotally mounted, as at 12, to the carrier 7 and a pendant weight 13, connected to said cam, operates to hold the same in such position that movement of the carrier in one direction will cause the pin 10 to be extracted from the drill shank, while movement in the other direction will allow the clamp or cam to move without a gripping action.
con
The means for operating the carrier or Y pulling bar 7 consists of a rocker shaft 14 having an arm 15 carrying a link or reach rod 16 that connects with the arm 17 of the carrier, and by the arm 18 and link 19 the rocker shaft is connected to be operated from the power source. Said source consists of a cylinder 20 having a piston .21 therein, whose piston rod 22 connects with the link 19 as shown. The reciprocations of the piston are controlled by a suitable manually-actuated valve 23, whose controlling handle (not shown) is located within convenient reach of the operator.
The construction shown in Figure 2 is in all essentials the same as that illustrated in Figure 1V and differs only in that the pin gripping cam 24C is mounted on the upper side of the carrier or pull bar 25 as distinct from on the under side, as in Figure 1; and in place of the form of rocker shaft 14 a rocker shaft 26 has two upright arms 27 and 28 connecting respectively with links 29 and 30 that couple with the cam carrying bar and the piston rod 31.
The illustration shows a particular embodiment of the invention, though it is understood, of course, that the invention may be carried out in other ways, and that therefore the present disclosure is to be considered incan illustrative sense only and not as a limiting one.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a supporting structure, a guideway mounted on said structure, a carrier bar slidably mounted on the guide-Way, a rocker arm having a fixed fulcruin mounted on said structure, a link connecting said'rocker arm with the carrier bar,
and a. cam element mounted on the carrier bar provided with a pendant Weight operable to cause the com to positively funetion When the carrier bar is moved in one direction and to be released when the carrier 1U bar moves in the opposite direction.
In testimony whereof I aiix `my signature.
LE RoY HICKS.
