WITNESSES L. EXT]:I'REEC AIQD OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANEA.
rais n HEATER- FOR INTERNAIr-fiOMBUSTIGN Application filed September as, 1821. seriai its. sot-me.
To ail? whom it may concern:
be it known. that l, EDWIN L. lVIEcANn,
residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny antl State of Pcnl'isylvanis, a citizen of the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful linprovernents in Heaters for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which improvements the -tollowing is a specification.
lin an application filecl July 2, 1920 Serial Number shown an electrically operated heater for vaporizing combustible fiuicls just prior to their entrance into the engines of automobiles or other internal combustion engines. The invention described herein relates to the ma nner of mounting such type of heater tion plane i u scale illustrating the manner of constructing and. arranging the terminal of the heater anti Fig.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on a inclicatecl h the line III-HI Fi 2;
e is a sectional view on an enlargecl is a (let-shed view on a large scale showing the heating coil and the eyes "forming the terminals thereof.
'1 hile the invention (lQSCIll)G(l and claimed herein is not limited to the use of any particular construction of heater, itis shown in connection with the form of heater shown and describeci in the application above re- D or to and consists of a narrow strip of metal coiled; to form a conical helix. end. of the st larger encl eye or loop The ip of metal at the lease or he helix is bent to form an The other end of the strip extends down through the helix anti is bent to term. a radial ance beyond the base of the ll6l1X and ortion extendin a short the portion extending beyond the helix is bent to' form a loop or eye in a plane Suhantl the 1 2 itially parallel wit e of the conon is arranged longilly of the conceit, through the I l,
huh or reduced port-ion neat; or which is notched at for the reception of have described and.
tubular extension i portion of the strip of metal. is nut is provided beyond this reduced. pc ..on with a tubular extension 9 on which. is placed a sleeve 10 formed of insulating material to preferably intimated fibre. Washer 11 formed of insulating material preferably mica. is slipped. on. the sleeve and against the terminal eye As the sleeve has an ex ternal diameter equal to that of the portion 3 or" the nut the mice Washer will, when sub ected to pressure as hereinafter clescribecl he forced against the eye 5 and the latter against the head of the nut thereby ensuring goocl electrical. contact between i the nut and eye. The eye 2 is next placed on the sleeve 10 anal agaii'ist the mica washer, which will prevent any short circuit between the eyes 2 and 5 while the insulating sleeve 10 will insulate the eye 2 from the A metal washer 12 is next placed on the sleeve 10 and in contact with the eye 2 and in order that this Washer may form a goocl connection between the eye 2 and the conduit; to which is connected one terminal of the generator employed for heating the heliis the underside of the washer is curt-eel to corresponil with the curvature of coniluit. After the shove mentioned parts have been assembled. es descriheeu the outer curl of the tubular eX- tension is flare-cl out thereby enlarging the owl of the sleeve 10 curl securing the several parts in proper position on, the t, and the latter to the initials of "h The helix I i cone iit sncl the outer portions of t. e tubular extension 9' and the sleeve 10 insertm in any ogenin ti o the wall of the cone iii then passe conduit and scr comparatively l r-eferahly forine slippecl onto the against this wa diameter than we iiole i l 't, will eiitectually -iculete from. the concluit. SCI fthe tightly against washer 1.2 will he pre. the inner wall of the co: lui cral iiieinhers comic-(l by pressed tightl fie insulsi between the eno izeo washer ced the sleeve into the opening in the conduit as is necessary to ensure contact of the several partscarried by the nut '4'.
When the Wall of the conduit is thick or the opening for the reception of the parts carried by the nut is forced through the flange on the end of the conduit, the space intermediate the end of the sleeve 10 and the Washer 14 may be filled With Washers of insulating material as shown in Fig.
It is characteristic of the construction described and shown herein that all of the parts which are to be placed within the conduit are tied together, and that the nut 7 and parts carried thereby project only a small distance beyond the largest coil of the helix and hence only a slight i'lexure of the axial terminal of the helix will be required in placing the device in position.
ll claim herein as my invention 1. The combination of a nut having a tubular extension, a heating coil having one of its terminals mechanically and electrically connected to the nut, an insulating sleeve secured upon the extension, aneye forming the other terminal of the coil secured on said sleeve.
2. The combination of a nut having a reremain duced portion and a tubular extension, a heating coil having eyes as its terminals, one of said eyes enclosmg the reduced portion of the nut, a sleeve of insulating material surrounding the tubular extension and surrounded by the other terminal eye, a Washer of insulating material interposed between the two eyes, a metal Washer fitting on the sleeve and hearing against the terminal carriedthereby, the end of the tubular extension being flared to hold the several parts in position on the nut.
3. The combination of a conduit having an opening in its well, a nut, a heating coil having one terminal electrically connected to the nut and its other terminal mechanically secured to the nut but electrically insulated therefrom and adapted to be electrically connected to the inner surface of the conduit and a threaded stem passing through the opening in the conduit, but out ot contact with the Wall or" the opening, and engaging the nut, a nut screwing onto the stem and an insulated Washer interposed between the exterior nut and pipe.
In testimony whereof, it have hereunto set m hand.
y EDlVllil W'IEGAND.
