OWEN THOMAS, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE HYDRAULIC PRESSED STEEL COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
BARREL OHIME.
Application filed November 29, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OWEN THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Barrel Chimes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates generally to chimes for barrels and more particularly to a sheet metal chime intended to be affixed to a sheet metal barrel, and also to the method of connecting said chime to said barrel. The object of the invention is to provide a sheet metal chime in the form of a channel ring which can be cheaply and easily manufactured and readily connected to the corner of the barrel providing an ample reenforcement at that point and also providing a sufficiently sharp edge to facilitate in the heading up of the bilged barrel, it being understood that this form of chime is intended for use in connection with bilged barrels, al-
though the broad principle thereof can be utilized in connection with casks and drums without departing from the broad principle of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction and also in the novel steps of application, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Fig, 1 is a view one half in section and the other half in elevation of a sheet metal barrel embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional View of one corner of the barrel and the angled sheet metal chime applied thereto preparatory to brazing; and Fig. 3 is a view showing the various component parts disconnected but arranged in their proper relative positions.
Referring to the drawing, A indicates a corner of a sheet metal barrel, B the side portion thereof adjacent to said corner and C the head portion thereof adjacent to said corner. The sheet metal chime comprises a tapering ring portion D which is bent back upon itself as shown at E and then carried inwardly fOr a short distance as indicated at]? and finally formed into an an- Serial No. 341,378.
gled edge G which is adapted to rest firmly upon the head of the barrel, while the outer ring portion D is sized and forced into contact with the side B of the barrel. The angled chime is so shaped that an interior angle H is formed between the side D and the portion F and in this interior angle is placed a load of brazing material I which may be in the form of a wire or it may be in the form of a paste applied to the said angle.
The sheet metal chime containing the load of brazing material is then forced upon the corner of the barrel and the ring portion D is initially connected to the barrel by slightly indenting the ring D at definite points as indicated at K, the indentation being sufiicient to cause an interlocking indentation L in the side of the barrel as most clearly shown in Fig. 2 and thereby sewing the chime to the corner of the barrel. The chime is then subjected to a sufiicient heat to cause the brazing material to fall so as to permanently unite the angled chime to both the head and sides of the barrel.
The chime constructed as herein shown and described possesses great strength 0wing to its peculiar contour and yet is comparatively li ht and therefore adds very little additional weight to the barrel proper.
The return bend E can be made sufliciently sharp to provide a suitable edge which will facilitate the heading up of the barrel. It will thus be seen that I provide a simple and eiiic-ient sheet metal chime capable of carrying out the objects hereinbefore referred to.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The combination with an integral head and side of barrel, of a sheet metal chime ring fitted thereto at the'junction of the head and side, said chime ring having a portion contacting with the side of barrel, a
portion contacting with the head of barrel, the intermediate portions being bent together to provide a double chime portion, the angle between the head and side portions containing brazing material by means of which the ring is brazed to the barrel.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto afiix my signature.
OWEN THOMAS.
