VERNON W. RUSSELL AND JESSE 'I. 'KYL E, OF BREA, .AND JULIAN A. CAMPBELL, F LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA.
OIL BURNER.
Application filed March 15, 1921. Serial No. 452,517.
1/ 0 all whom it may concern: I p Be it known that we, VERNON W. RUSS LL and Jnssn T. KYLE, citizens of the United States, and residents of Brea, county of Orange, and State of California, and JULIAN A. CABIPBELL, a citizen of the United-States, residing at Long Beach, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in :0 Oil Burners, of which the following is a specification.
It is the Object of this invention to, pr-l lar narrow elongated port so as to obtain the desired pressure. I
The invention will be readily understood from the following description of the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a burner constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sections on the lines 3 3 and 44e of Fig. 1.
The fuel chamber of the burner is shown at 1 as of relatively large diameter at its rear end, as shown at 2, and tapering to a relatively small diameter atits forward end as shown at 3. An end plate 4 is retained against the open rear end of the burner chamber as by a closure plate 5 threaded onto the end of the burner. chamber and provided With the shoulder 6 engaging a shoulder 7 upon plate 4: for retaining the latter in position. The closure plate 5 is provided with an axial opening and is connected to a conduit 8 as by a suit-able threaded connection. A second conduit 9 extends through conduit 8 and through an axial opening 10 in plate 4 so that the inner conduit discharges into the fuel chamber The mixed fuel and mixed fuel, steam and air escapes, is a simi- I beyond the plate 1. The conduit 9 be held in position with relation to plate 4 by means of a nut 11.
A T-joint 12 is preferably arranged upon conduit 8 with conduit}; extending rearwardly beyond the same as through a pipe 18 provided in the end of the T-joint. A pipe let'isconnected to the angularly disposed nipple of the T-joint, said pipe being provided with a suitable valve 15, and a Valve 16 is arranged in the rearwardly extending portion of conduit 9. The conduit 9 ISCOIIIlQCtGCi to a suitable fuel supply,
while the pipe 1 1 is connected to a steam' supply in order that steam may be dis charged through conduit 8 into a space 17 between plate 4 and the closure cap 5.
A. concave baffle plate 18 is arranged in fuel chamber 1 over the discharge end of conduit 9, said baffle plate being preferably held in position by screws 19 received through the same and into plate 4. The axial, portion of the baflie plate is spaced somewhat beyond the end of conduit 9,, and the radially extending arms 20 of thebaflie plate curve toward plate 41- with the ends of said. arms forming restricted discharge passages 21 between the baflie plateand plate 4 adjacent the wall of chamber 1. The
arms 20- are so arrangedthat the discharge.
ports 21 extend in opposite directions and are adaptedto discharge fuel from the same circumferentially of fuel chamber 1. By this arrangement it willbe seen that the fuelasv discharged to the fuel chamber is provided with a whirling motion as it travels axially of the fuel chamber. 7
- The plate a is provided with discharge ports 22 communicating with the space 17 I and tapering to restricted discharge ends 23 opening into the fuel chamber 1 adjacent the discharge port 21 provided by baffle 18. The ports 22 are inclined, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, with the discharge ends 23 thereof extending circumferentially of plate 1 and in the direction of discharge through the respective ports 21, so that the steam discharged through ports 22 will also be provided with a whirling motion within the fuel chamber. By this arrangement it will be seen that the fuel and steam will be thoroughly mixed during their passage through the fuel chamber.
A burner head 25 is connected to discharge end 3 of the fuel chamber by coupling 26,
and said burner head tapers outwardly somewhat towards its discharge end 27. The discharge end of the burner head is arranged as a relatively narrow elongated port, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. An air conduit 28 surrounds the burner head and the discharge end 3 of the fuel chamber in spaced relation therefrom and is preferably supported by a" spider 30. The ends of conduit 28 are open so as to form an annular air passageway 31 surrounding the burner head, and the respective ends of the'air conduit flare outwardiy with the front end extending beyond the discharge port 27 of the burner head and forming a discharge port 32 for the mixed fuel, steam and air. This discharge port is also arranged as a relatively narrow elon-- I gated opening, as clearly shown in Fig. i.
' duits and arranged to cause whirling dis-' The device as thus described provides for the efficient mixture of steam and fuel in the fuelchamber of a. burner, by setting up a whirling motion of the mixed fuel and steam, and the restricted discharge ports provided forthe burner head and'for the air conduit, form means whereby the'mixed fuel and steam after mixture with air in order to form a combustible product, will be discharged at high velocity through the burner.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is: c
1. A burner comprising a fuel chamber, a fuel supply conduit, a separate supply conduit for another fluid, and a fixed baifle in said chamber over said supply conduits, said baffle having a concave lower surface and being spaced beyond the ends of said concharge of saidfu'el to said chamber.
2. A burner comprising a fuel chamber, a fuel supply conduit, a separate supply con duit for another fluid, a fixed bafiie in'said chamber over said supply conduits, said loaf fie having a concavelower'surface and belng spaced beyond the ends of SZtId'COHdlll'tS and arran ed to cause whirling discharge of said fuel to said chamber, and means for mixing a fluid with said fuel as it is discharged to said chamber.
3. A burner comprislng a fuel chamber, a
' fuel supply conduit, a separate supply conduit foranother fluid, a fluid supply'conduit,
a fixed baflie in said chamberover said fuel 7 supply conduits, said baflle having a concave lower surface and being spacedbeyond the ends of said conduits and arranged to cause whirling discharge of said fuel'to saidcham- Iber, and a discharge for said fluid supply to said chamberat the discharge edge of said baflie;
4. In a burner, a mixing chamber, a partition arranged in one end thereof, which partition is provided with an inclined steam jet, opening means for supplying'steam to the chamber behind-said partition, a fixed bafiie plate arranged in front of said partition and provided'with a nozzle that is arranged to discharge circumferentially relative to the walls ofthe fuel chamber, the open end of said nozzle terminating adjacent to the steam jet opening through the partition, and
means for supplying liquid. hydrocarbon to steam jet opening through the partition,
means for supplying liquid'hydrocarbon to the chamber'between said partition and said bafiie, said fuel chamber being provided with a fuel outlet and an air tube surrounding said fuel outlet.
6. A burner comprising a fuel chamber, a fuel supply conduit, a fluid supply conduit, a fixed concave baflie in said chamber over said fuel supply conduit and arranged to cause whirling-discharge of said fuel to said chamber, and a discharge for said fluid supply" to said chamber at the discharge edge of said 'bafiie andarranged to cause whirling discharge of said fluid.
In testimony whereof wehave signed our names to this specification.
