Description
rUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. BOWMAN, OF MORROW, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,815, dated February 24, 1874; application tiled December 26, 187,3.
To all whom it tmay concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BOWMAN, of Morrow,VVarren county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Drying Apparatus, of which the following is a specification:
My invention is an improvement in the class of hot closets or ovens formed with suitable racks for holding fruit and other edible substances to be dried, and t-raversed by fines from a stove or other heating device located beneath or to one side of the chamber; and my improvements comprise devices for insuringan equable and proper distribution of heat.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal section of a drying-house embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section ofthe same at the lineX X. Fig. 3 is a transverse section at the line Y' Y; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the flue at Z Z, Fig. 1.
A represents a drying closet or chamber; B, open slatted door of same, furnished with a register, B', to regulate the induction of air in the normal operation ofthe apparatus; O, partition inclosin g chimney D E, intermediate partition; F, cleats for the support of sliding racks or trays G, having customary open slatted bottoms. improvement is the horizontal flue H, which traverses the closet from end to end, and has the represented lattened section, so as to occupy but little vertical room, and yet extend horizontally almost entirelyT across the closet. A neck, I, on the under side of said iue, near one extremity, admits a pipe, J, from any suitable stove or heater, and another neck, l ,rises from the remote end, supports and communicates with a chimney, D, which is liattened, so as to occupy less. room longitudinally than transversely of the chamber, as shown. At-
. tached to the under surface of the upper side of the horizontal ueH, directly over the lue J, is stay and deilecting plate, M, of the bel- A characteristic feature of my lying form shown in Figs. l and 4. This plate serves the purpose of detlectin g the heat from striking the top of the flue as it enters, a-nd thus warping or stiening it. This latter action is still further aided by one or more V- .formed deflectors, N N N, which are ixed to the under surface ofthe Ene-top, and by shiftable dampers or detlectors O O, whose handles o o extend outside of the liuc. P are valves, by which communication may be closed between theue and chimney, when desired. Q are doors for giving access, and occasionally air, to the interior of the closet. R lt are openings in the top of the closet, which, when the entire heat is desired to be retained, may be closed by flaps or shutters placed over said openings but when the ventilation, or moderation of heat, is desired, said openings may be partially or wholly-uncovered by turning either or both ot' said aps or shutters upon their hinges, so as to `allow a greater or less area for the escape of heated air. These ventilatingllaps or shutters can be hinged to the extreme top board S of the apparatus, and suitable racks or other devices may be applied for retaining said shutters in any desired position.
I claim herein as new and of my inventionl. In a drying apparatus, the horizontallyattened horizontal liuc H, having the stay and deiiecting plate M, arranged as herein set forth, for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of slat bottom B, register B', flat horizontal ue H, induction-pipe I J, discharge-due D, trays F F, and doors Q Q, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the horizontal tlat ue H, stay and deliecting plate M, and regulator O o, for the purpose specified.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand. A
Attest: GEORGE W. BOWMAN.
