JACOB E'NEAI-IR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MATCH SAFE.
Application filed May 10, 1919. Serial No. 296,082.
In said patent is illustrated a safe to hold a small number of matches; a coil, consisting of windings ot match-igniting strip, surrounding the safe. @ne of the objects of the present invention is to make it convenient Ato supply the safewith matches; and to this end I mount the match-safe upon a b'aseA which comprises a magazine Jtor the matches. This isdone in such a manner that the matches in the magazine are safeguarded, while access may be readily had thereto for the purpose of securing a supply wherewith to replenish the match-safe. The weight of the magazine enables it to do service as a l base o r support for the match-safe at the match-striking operation.
The magazine is illustrated in the form of a boX provided with a lid; and the matchsate is mounted upon the lid, to be taken ott therewith. v
The magazine is of such form and capacity that there may be conveniently deposited or litted therein a pasteboard tray, in which the matches are usually packed for the market. Such boxes are usually in the form of oblong trays, which are slidden into casings open at their ends, in which condition they are iilled with matches and marketed. In using the novel magazine, such tray with its'niatches will be slidden out from the casing, and dropped into the magazine; and then the cover will be replaced, with its attached match-sate. Upon merely removing the cover, the matches in the magazine become accessible. v
One ot' the objects of the invention is to prevent spurious matches from being supplied to the magazine, and to this end the magazine is provided with a special support for the tray, and the tray is formed with a .special contour to fit the support, so that spurious boxes cannot be successfully employed; the magazine being unprovlded with A a bottom, so that matches A cannot be loosely dumped therein, but must be within their trays o r containers as they are placed in the magazine.
Preferably the lid or cover of the magazine is made double, comprising both a top and a floor portion, to form a box or receptacle into which matches and ashes may be dropped through openings in the cover.
rovision is made to facilitate the dumping of the contents `from the tray when required.
In the preferred form of the invention, the bottom of the ash-receiver is made slop- 'ing from the ends to the middle, so that matches deposited in the openings in the lid will not accumulate beneath said openings and thereby choke the same, but will slide or settle towards the bottom portion ot the Hoor, and hence away from the openings, leaving the latter clear.
Other features andadvantages will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a matchsafe, striker, ash box and magazine, illustrating the `present improvements in one form; the parts being broken away to disclose the interior.
Figure 2 is a part-sectional side elevation of the structure.
Figure 3 is aperspective of the novel match tray in its open-ended casing.
Figure l illustrates the manner of using a pasteboard match tray of ordinary construction.
Figure 5 is a perspective view and Figure 6 a sectional elevation of the preferred form of the invention, showing the ash-receiver provided with a bottom which slopes from the ends to the middle.
As set forth in said patent, the matches 10 stand in a safe 11, having a tloor 12, and having threads 13 rolled into its lower end, to screw into a threaded neck 14 rising from a cover 15 provided upon a match magazine 16, which constitutes the base for the matchsafe and striker. Surrounding the lower t part of said match-safe and said neck is a tubular pedestal or shell 17, which is held down upon the cover by means of a flange or rim 18 provided upon the top ot the Vmatch-safe 11; and upon this shell are arranged the windings of match-striking material 19.
Within said tray is placed a pasteboard tray 20 comprising ends 21, sides 22 and bottom 23, and filled with matches 24. This box may be supplied in a. rectangular pasteboard casing 25 having open ends, andbf. the usual dimensions 1n which matches are suiiicient ydimensions to support the` match tray. The'latter has its lower corners beveled at 27 as shown, so as to correspond with the inclination of the supporting tongues, so that the tray may sink to the bottom ofthe magazine. 'The loorl of the tray supports Since the magazine has not` Hoor, it is, of course, imp'racticable to dump' matches loosely into the magazine, wherebyV the matches.
a protection is afforded against they use of inferior matches; and 'if it were attempted to use trays of ordinary make, which do not have the provision of the beveledend corners for resting upon the supporting tongues, said trays wouldtnot be found to sink to the proper depth, and would stand so high that the cover couldV not be successfully placed upon the magazine. vThe magazine may have a bead 28 rolled into its lower edge i'ory resting upon a table, andif'orstiii'ness. i
In the iront of the 'magazine `may be formed a window 29 through which may be read an advertisement or'legend() print` ed upon the side of the pasteboard match tray, thus increasing the usefulness of the latter, since ithas notbeenl the practice to print upon the sides of these matchtrays heretofore, because said sides fwerefalways" covered up in 'the casings.
The cover may be double, or bottom 31, which may constitute the floor of' an ash receptacle, and may have end and side walls 32, 33 soldered or otherwise con-Y nectedto thefcover; said ash receptacle eX- tending within the magazine, and the cover having a flange 34 extending down over the top edge of the magazine all the way around the same. In said cover may be formed openings 35, through which burned matches and ashes may be dropped into the ash receptacle, and at the end of the lattermay be formed a discharge opening 36, said opening being normally cioniinedrwithin the maga# zine, as at Figure 2, so that ashes cannot be spilled from' the receptacle, but being use# ful to discharge'the` contents of the receplV tacle when the latter is lifted out from' the magazine; f A' Y Atl Figure 6 the floor of the ash receiver slopes inwardly at 37 from theopposite sides or ends.' suiiiciently topermit'matche's and ashes dropped thereon 'to' gravitate away from the-openings'38.l These'open'f ings are narrow slits, and havev enlarged 'i have a false A ends 89. The matches must-therefore be scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements .mayA be"usedwithou`t' others,
