METAL WHEEL.
Application filed May 15, 1920.
To all whom t may'concem:
Be it known that I, MAURICE LAoHMaN, a citizen of the `United States. and a residentof New York, in the county of New York and State of New, York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovementsin Metal Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
My-present invention relates to wheels made from a sheet metal blank cut from a plate of sheet metal and adapted to con stitute the felly, spoke and hub-parts of the complete wheel, all of said parts being integral.
The object of the invention is to provide a sheet metal wheel which shall be capable of being cheaply manufactured and of a strong and rigid construction and which will also be of uniform, symmetrical appearance.
The invention consists of a sheetl metal wheel having integral spokes, felly and hub part, the spokes being staggered and secured to a hub member in such manner that the wheel presents a uniform appearance.
The invention further consists inthe details of construction of a metal wheel as hereinafter more particularlv described and then specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings. Fig. l is an edge elevation of a sheet metal plate from which a wheel in accordance with this invention may be obtained.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the plate after being blanked out to form the essential parts of the sheet metal portions of the wheel.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the completed wheel.
Fig. 4 is a transverse crosssection of the same. taken on the line Ll-Ll Fig. 3.
l indicates the felly part, 2 the hub part of the sheet metal blank and 3. 3 the spoke parts thereof. The said parts may be cut or stamped out of a plane sheet or plate of metal in any desired manner. The spoke parts 3 form continuations of the rim and4 center or hub part 2 while the spokes 3', at their inner ends are divided or separated from the inner portion of the blank at .it to permit them. to be staggered with relation to the spokes 3. so that at the hub ends they may be secured to the opposite end of the hub from that with which the center 2 of the blank is connected as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
Serial No. 381,782.
6 indicates a hub member consisting of a hub box in the form of an annular cylinder provided with. integral, inwardly projecting annular flanges T and 8 at each end thereof. The inner ends of the flanges bear on the hub barrel 9 which may be of any standard make and style.
The center portion or hub part 2 of the sheet metal blank tits around the hub barrel ,9 and bears by its flat vertical surface against the vertical outer surface of the flange 7 against which itmay be secured by any desired means. The free ends of the spokes 3 bear against the flat vertical surface of the flange 8 and are secured thereto preferably by bolts 10 which pass through the hub member consisting of the hub box 6 within the same and engaged by their heads or nuts directly or indirectly with the flanges 7, 8.
In the form of my invention shown the heads at one end of the bolts indicated at l() engage directly with the flange T, the spaces between the spokes 3 which are integral with the hub part 2 of the sheet of metal constituting the spoke portion of the wheel being enlarged radially inward and as indicated in Fig. 3. The bolt heads or nuts at the opposite end of said bolts engage the outer surface of the inner ends of spokes 3 and clamp the flatl inner face of said spoke ends against the vertical face of theflange 8.
By this arrangement the staggering of the'spokes is symmetrical, that is both sets, Il and 3 diverge from the center plane at the saine angle. and any blow on the rim of the wheel is transmitted to the hub barrel directlylor through a flange of the hub box. To secure the flat face of the hub part 2 of the sheet metal blank against the outer vertical face of the flange 'I a nut 11 threaded on the hub barrel and engaging said center may be employed. `When the center 2 fits upon the hub barrel itl is preferable to provide it with a flange 2 extending from'said center parallel to the general axls of the hub and giving to said center a widened bearing against the outer surface of the hub barrel.
By this arrangement of hub construction a clear, open space is provided between the spokes at the hub which gives better access tothe outer surface of the cylindrical hub box, facilitates cleaning and adds to the beauty of the wheel.
What l claim as my invention is 1 In a sheet metal v`wheel, the combination with a plate of sheet metal divided into spokes bent outwardly in opposite direcl tions, one set of spokes terminating at one hub end in free ends and the other set of spokes terminating in an undivided center -of the plate of sheet metal provided with a flange parallel to the axis of the wheel, a hub barrel or center upon which the said latter flange is seated, a hollow cylindrical metal hub box having inwardly directed flanges at its opposite ends seated upon the said hub barrel, means for securing the flat inner surface of the free ends of'one set of spokes against the flat outer surface of the flange at one end of' said hub box and means for securing the flat inner surface of the undivided center aga-inst the flat surface of the flange at the other end of said box.
2. A metal wheel comprising a hub barmusea rel, a hub member encircling said barrel, said member comprising a body and inwardly extending flanges at the-edges of said body, a sheet of material formed with openings providing hub, spoke and felly portions, said hub portion lying adjacent the outer face of one of' the flanges of" said hub member and having a flange forming a part of said hub portion, and means engaging the outer edge of said last named flange to force said hub portion into contact with said hub member. v
3. A metal wheel comprising a hub'barrel, a hub member mounted upon said barrel, a sheet of' material formed'with o enings providing hub, spoke and felly portions,
said spoke portions being bent alternately in opposite directions from the rim portion to forni two series of spokes, one of said series being integral with the hub portion, means for attaching the inner ends of the other series to a vertical flange of said hub member at one end thereof and means for securing said hub portion directly to an inwardly extending vertical flange of said member at the' other end thereof.
y Signed at New York inthe county of New York and State of New York this 12th day .of May A. 11.1920.
MAURICE LACHMAN.
