' ELECTRIC CANDLE LAMP.
Application filed December 2a, 3920, serial Ho. eeavea. Renewed Sane e,
To all whom it may concem,
Be it known that l, MORDUCH L. KAPLAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brookl n, in the county of Kings and State of ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Candle Lamps, specification.
The invention pertains to the; class candle lamps possessing a battery and an electric light bulb andadapted to stand on a table or the. like, said lamps being provided with a switch for making and breaking the cirthe battery and lamp, and the invention as for its purpose to simplify and cheapen the cost of electric candle lamps and to provide an-electric candle lamp comprising onl two units, to-wit: a battery and a detachab e cap or top member to be applied thereto and carrying the lamp bulb and switch. When the batte exhausted, the cap is removed t erefrom and placed upon a new battery, thus restorin the candle lamp forfurther use. In accor ance with my invention I dispense with the expensive metallic casings which usually receive the battery of electric candle lamps and provide a candle lamp consisting essentially and only of the battery and the detachable cap or dome-like top member, the
cap being e nipped with a socket to receive the lamp-bu band with a switch for making and breaking the circuit. My invention may be carried into effect in several modified forms, and said invention and referred means embodying the same will he fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which: p

Fig. 14 is a corresponding view of a further modified embodiment of my invention.
In the drawings, referring to Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, illustrating my invention, 20, 21 designate the cells of the. battery, which for convenience, I will indicate as a whole by the numeral 22. The cells 20, 21 are arranged as'usual, with the negative or zinc ole 23 of the upper battery cell engaged with the carbon pole 24 of the battery cell below it, and said cells 20, 21 in the com letion of the battery'are-enolosed in a pasteard cylinder or the like 25 which insulates and keeps the cells together and permits them to be handled as a single battery. 26' denotes the carbon pole of the upper batter cell 21, and it will preferably be of the s ape shown, to-wit, having a lower neck portion and an upper head portion. The carton 25 enclosing the battery plural cell battery before being applied one embodiment of 7 wra ping 27 an 22 may be wrapped with an ornamental character ofpaper or the like 27 as afimsh for the candle lamp, which is broad enough at its lower end to stand securely upon a table and does not require the presence of the usual expensive metallic holderswith which electric table lamps are customarily rovided. I secure to the zinc of the lower battery cell 20 a conducting strip 28 which extends upwardl between the carton 25 and d? is bent over the upper end of t e battery cell 21 to form a convenient terminal 29, the carton 25 at the lower end of the strip 28 being cut away, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to admit of the lower end of said strip being soldered to the zinc of the cell 20.
Upon the upper end of the battery 22 is attached aca or dome 30 which supports the features 0? my invention and which may be removed from one battery and placed 'upon another'batter'y whenever occasion may so require.
The capor dome 30 may be of cast or sheet metal or of other suitable material, and at its lower edge is preferably flanged, as shown in Fig. 1, to rest upon the upper edges of the carton 25and covering material 27. In the present instance the dome or cap 30 is shown as formed of cast metal and resting upon the terminal 29 of the conducting strip 28, said cap or dome being thus in electrical connection with the zinc of the battery cell 20. The cap or dome 30 is preferably of truncated cone-shape so as to resemble approximately the upper end of the conventional form of a candle, the sides oftheycap or dome converging on graceful linesupwardly and terminating in a sleeve portion 31. Within the cap or dome 30 I provide a vertical sleeve or cylinder 32 of insulating material, said sleeve being firmly gripped at its upper end within the contracted sleeve portion 31 of the cap or dome 30, while at its lower portion said sleeve 32 extends downwardly into approximately near relation to the upper end of the battery cell 21. Within the upper end of the sleeve 32 I provide a metallamp socket 33, said socket being of cylindrical outline and threaded and tightly held within the upper end of the sleeve 32 in position to-recelve the terminal 34 of the lamp bulb 35. Within the lower portion of a the sleeve 32 is provided an inverted sheet metal cap-like clutch 36 whose sides are slit to form spring members 37 which norsulating material 40 is interposed between the bottom of thesocket 33 and top of the clutch member 36, and upon the lower end I of the screw 38 is provided a nut 41 for securing the parts together. The screw 38 passes through a large opening in the bottom of the socket 33, and by not engaging said socket but engaging the fiber washer 39 becomes insulated from said socket. The fiber washer 40 insulates the socket 33 from the metalclutch member 36. The head of the screw 38 forms an electric contact point for the lower terminal 420i the lamp 35, while the other terminal of said lamp is in electrical engagement with the socket 33. The ea or dome 30 carries the fiber sleeve 32 and al of the parts connected therewith and, with said sleeve and its connections, may be handled as a unit and applied to and removed from the battery 22 at will.
In applying thecap or dome 30 and its parts to the battery 22 it is only necessary to shove the socket member 36 downwardly upon the head of the carbon pole 26 of the battery, this action serving to properly locate the lower edge of the cap or dome around the upper edge of the battery and efiect the electrical connection of the cap or dome with the terminal 29 of the conducting strip-2.8. When the clutch member 36 is forced downwardly on the carbon pole 26 the head 43 on said pole 26 becomes wedged within the clutch member 36 and forces the spring members 37 outwardly against, the inner walls of the tube or cylinder, 32, or to the position in which said spring members 37 are shown in Fig. 1. The action of the spring members 37 against the head 43 serves to detachably lock the cap or dome 30 and its parts upon the battery. The lamp bulb 35 will be screwed into the socket 33, as usual, and said lamp bulb may be replaced as often as may be required without removin the cap or dome 30 from the battery.
pon the side of the cap or dome 30 I provide a slidable thumb-piece 44 connected with a slidingswitch 45, whose upper end is disposed within the slot 46 cut in the side of the fiber sleeve 32. When the thumb-piece 44 is pushed upwardly, the upper end of the switch 45 will engage the side of the lamp socket 33 and afford an electrical connection from the zinc of the battery cell 20 through the conducting: strip 28, cap or dome 30,
switch 45 and socket 33 to the terminal 34 of the lamp bulb, whence the circuit will be from the terminal 42 of the lamp through the screw 38 to the carbon pole 26 of the battery, this completing the circuit through the lamp and causing the latter to light. The circuit may be broken and the light extinguished by sliding the thumbpiece 44 downwardly to remove the switch 45 from electrical contact with the lamp socket 33.
narrate The candle lamp shown in, Figs. 1 to 6 imelusive comprises two unitary parts, one being the battery 22 and the other the cap or dome and features carried by 1t. When the battery becomes exhausted the cap or dome 30 maybe removed from it and laced upon a fresh battery. The candleam isv inexpensive of manufacture and easi y cared for and manipulated, and said candle lamp may be set upon a table or can ried about with the hand grasped upon the battery 22. I have also found thatthe cap or dome 30 so tightly olin s to the battery that the entire article may e lifted by tak: ing hold of the cap or dome 30. The head 43 on the positive pole 26 of the battery should be of such size so asto be firmly en- ,L'aged by the clutch member 36, and said head 43 may consist simply of a metal cap driven upon the upper end of the pole mem-. ber 26, sufficiently indicated in Fig. 13.
In my construction of candle lamp I employ as aforesaid two essential features, to-
Wit, the battery and the dome or cap 30, with its parts, and it is to be observed that the cap or dome 30 is detachably connected with the battery, and that in accordance with my invention I do nbt employ the expensive metal parts at resent required in electric candle lamps. he covering material 27 on the battery will be made sufiiciently attractive to cause the candle lamp to have an ornamental appearance, and said covering material may be of paper,- linen or other convenient material.
In Figs. 7, 8 and 9 I illustrate a modified construction of my invention, and in these figures 46 denotes-the battery, 47 the dome or cap therefor and 48 the lamp bulb, which is held in a metallic threaded lamp socket 49 soldered within the upper contracted end portion 50 of the cap or dome 47. The cap or dome 47 has secured to its lower flan d edge, where it rests on the battery 46, a h re ring51 and a1 fibre disk 52 which has an open center, as at 53, and i'scut out at one side, as
at 54, to expose the free end of a switch spring 55 secured by rivets to the upper face of the fibre washer 52, said free end of the switch spring 55 being directly over and flanged downwardly to permanently engage a terminal 56 formed by bending inwardly over the battery the upper end of a conducting strip 57, which corresponds with the conducting strip 28 of Fig. land at its lower end will be connected with the zinc or negative pole of the battery correspondingly with the construction shown in Fig. 1. socket 49 has secured to its lower portion a fibre or other insulating tube 58 and within the lower end of this tube 58 is secured the invert-clutch member 59 which corresponds with the clutch-member 36 of Figs; 1 to 6 of sheet-metal and having to be forced uponthe;
inclusive, being spring members 60 lamp, 69
The lamp the battery. The clutch-member 59 is connected with the lamp-socket 49 by means of a screw 61 whose head is engaged by the lower terminal of the lamp-bulb and whosev 43 of the posilowerend engages the head tive pole element 26 of the battery, an insu lating washer 62 being provided below the head of the screw and an insulating washer 63 bein provided between the lamp socket 49 and c utch-member 59, said screw and insulating washers corresponding with, the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 5. Upon the side of the cap or dome 47 is rovideda turn-button or head 64 mounts on a pin 65 which has a bearing in the side of the cap or dome 47 and at its inner end carries an arm 66 which, when turned downwardly will engage the switch-spring 55 which is against the terminal 56 to complete the circuit through the batter and lamp and which, when turned from said spring 55, will break the circuit. The circuit pole of the 57, switch-spring 55, arm 66, cap or dome 47 and lam -.socket 49 to one terminal of the lamp an from the other terminal of the lamp throu h the screw 61 to the positive pole of the attery.
is from the ne ative The cap or dome 47 with all of its own features may be detached from and applied to the battery in the same manner that the battery through the con uctor Y cap or dome carrying the features to be a plied to the battery for producing a cand e the lamp bulb and 70 a fibre or other insulating tube held at'its upper end by the lampsocket set within the contracted neck portion 71 of the cap or dome 68, said I tube 70 corresponding exactly with the tube 58 shown in Fig. 7; The fibretube 70 contains the lamp socket 49, clutch-member 59, screw 61 and fibre washers 62, 63 exactly as shown in Fig. 7 and therefore not fully'illustrated in Figs. 10 and 11. The clutchmember in Figs. 10 and 11 isshown at 72 and engages the positive pole element 73 of the battery 67. The screw of Fig. 11 corresponding with the screw 61 of Fig. 7, ll
number 74;
' Upon the lower flanged edge of the cap or dome 68 is secured a fibre ring or washer 75, and to this ring or washer is secured a slitted conductingdisk-like plate 76 having a series of inwardly and downwardly extendllllii in main spring-sections 7': some one or w ich will, when the cap or dome 68 is applied upon the battery, engage the upper] spring contact sections 77 .will engage the terminal 78. Th purpose: of havin the ring of contact sections 77 is to make 1t unnecessary to use any special care in applying the cap or dome 68 upon the battery. The circuit is made from the .slitted ring or plate 76 .up through the cap or dome 68 to the lamp socket by means of a push-button or slide 80 whose stem. passes through a slot' 81in the cap or dome 68 and carries on its inner end a conducting arm 82 adapted, when the slide 80 is moved downwardly to the lpo-- sition shown in Fig. 10, toenter into e e trical engagement with the ring or plate 76,
thereby to make the circuit from the conductingstrip 79 to the lamp socket. When the slide 80 ispushed upwardly on the side of the dome or cap 68, the arm 82 will be carried from the plate or ring 76 and the circuit will be thereby broken.
Fig. 13 presents an embodiment of my mvention in which the circuit is made and broken by a rotary movement of the cap or pole element, and 91. a screw connecting the lamp-socket 88 with the cap 90 and which is in circuit with the lower terminal of the lamp and said cap, a fibre washer 92 being being provided within the socket 88 below the head of the screw 91 and a fibre washer 93 being interposed between the lower end of said socket 88 and a nut 94 provided on the screw 91 and firmly engaging said washer 93. 'The lower threaded end of the screw 91 enters a threaded hole in the cap 90. When the ,cap or dome 86 is rotated to work the screw 91 downwardly throu h the cap 90, the lower flanged edge of t e dome will be pressed against the upper bent end of the conducting strip 84 and at that time the circuit will be from the strip 84 through the dome 8'6 and lamp socket 88 to one terminal of the lamp 87 and thence through the lower terminal of said lamp, screw 91 and cap 90 to the positive pole or element 89 of the battery. When the dome the positive lower flang is moved against the up r end portion of fitting upon and preferably not detachable from said positive 86 is reversely rotated, the cap or dome will be elevated by reason of the enga ment of the screw 91 with the cap 90 an this will result in the lower flanged edge of the cap or dome leaving the conducting strip 84 and in the breaking of the circuit.
In Fig. 14 I illustrate a further embodiment of my invention in which the circuit is made and broken by a rotary movement of the cap or dome, and therein 95 designates the battery, 96 the usual conducting strip thereof, 97 the u r terminal of said strip extending inwar y over the battery, 98 the metallic cap, or dome, 99'the lamp, 100 the threaded lamp socket secured within the upper contracted end of said dome, 101 a threaded positive pole element or screw at the upper end of the batte 102 amp or the like mounted upon an engaging the thread of said screw, and 103 the screw connecting the lamp socket 100 with the cap 102, a fiber washer 104 being interposed below the head of said screw and a fiber washer 106 being interposed between the lower end of the'lamp socket 100 and the upper end of the cap 102. In the construction shown in Fig. 14, when the cap or dome 98 is retated' to work the cap 102 downwardly on Io element or screw 101, the edge of the cap or dome 98 the strip 96 and the circult will then be completed through the battery and lamp. When the cap 01. ome 98 is, reversely rotated it will, by reason of the engagement of the cap 102 with the screw 101, become elevated from the conductin strip 96, and thereby the circuit through t e lamp .will be broken.
' In Fig. 13 the screw 91, on the rotation of the cap or dome 86, effects the movement of said cap or dome 86 to make or break the circuit, and in Fig. 14 the rotation of the cap or dome 98 efi'ects the making or breaking oi the circuit due to its depression or elevation by the action of the screw 101.
It will be understood from the foregoing description that several forms of make-andof Fig. 13 is allowed to remain in its lower position against the terminal 85, the circuit may be broken by turning the lamp 87 to move upwardly and carry its lower terminal from the screw 91, thus extinguishing the li ht, and said circuit ma. be again esta lished whenever desired y screwing the lamp 87 downwardly until its lower terminal again engages the screw 91. -I may therefore use the lamp-bulb as a make-and-break switch. In the construction shown in Fig.
j 14, the lamp bulb may v tion, and
neonate also, h employed for makin and breaking the circuit.
