To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AnNo TAUsoHEn, a citizen of Germany, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, Kings County, city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Washing Machines, 'of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to machines for washing vegetables and the like and aims to provide a machine which shall be simple in construction, little liable to require replacement and repairs, which shall have long life, and shall carry out the washing opera, 'tion efiiciently and economically.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a device of the general character referred to above which, in one of its forms, may embody measuring and discharging means for automatically receiv-v ing a measured quantity of the washed vegetables, or the like, and thereafter discharge the same onto any suitable drainage means, from which the washed vegetables may in turn be discharged into any suitable container. It is a further object of the present invention to provide suitable drainage means which may be used in connection with the washing device referred to above, and which may, in addition, be provided with a hopper for loading the washed vegetables int-o suitable containers, such as bags, together with means for supporting the bags during the loading operation.
By way of example I shall, in the accompanying specification describe, and in the annexed drawings show, apreferred embodiment of the present invention. It is, however to be clearly understood that my invention is not limited to the particular form thereof herein shown and described for purposes of illustration only.
Referring to the drawings wherein I'have illustrated the aforesaid illustrative embodiment of the present invention,

Referring to the machine described above. 10 comprises a suitable base or platform on which are supported beams 11 acting as a suitable base or foundation for the machine as a whole.
Suitably supported on the beams 11 carried by the platform 10 is an open tank 12 preferably of semi-cylindrical form open at the top.
The tank 12 at its ends 13 and 14 carries the bearings 15 and 16, respectively. Suitably supported within the bearings 15 and 16 so as to be capable of rotation therein is a. shaft 17 driven by means of a gearwheel 18, which is in. turn driven by and meshes with a pinion 19 carried by a counter shaft 20. The counter shaft 20 is suitably borne in the bearings 21 and 22, and is driven in any suitable manner, as by means of the pulley 23 and the belt 24 driven from any suitablesource of power, not here deemed necessary to be shown. The bcarings 21 and 22 are carried by a standard 25 supported on the beams 11, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing.
The open tank 12 is preferably provided with a drain 12 which may be operated by means of a key 12 carried in any convenient position on the tank, as by means of being suspended on the hook 12 The tank 12 is also provided with a man-hole 12 having a cover 12 provided with suitable locking means, such as the hooks 12 and the crossbar 12 so that the man-hole may be sealed against the escape of liquid from the tank 12. The man-hole may be used for scraping out sediment or other deposits collecting within the tank 12 during the continued use of the same.
Carried by the shaft 17, so as to rotate therewith so that the lower half of the same will always rotate within the semi-cylindrical open tank 12 is a cage 26. The cage 26 is preferably substantially cylindrical in form and has the closed ends 27 and 26 which are preferably free from perforations or other openings. The cylindrical wall 29 of the cage 26 is, however, provided with a large number of perforations 30 for a purpose subsequently to be described.
The cage 26 is provided with the hinged cover 31 which may be locked in place by means of the hasps 32 cooperating with the staples and the hooks 234 retained in locking position by means of the springs 35, The cover 31, like the rest of the cylindrical wall 29 of the cage 2-6, is perforated, as by being provided with the perforations or other openings 30".
lVithin the cylindrical cage 26 there is provided suitable measuring and discharging means adapted to be automatically operated by the rotation of the cage 26 to fill the measuring means with a measured quantity of washed vegetables, or the like. and thereafter to discharge the same, as onto any suitable drainage means. For this purpose I provide the inside of the cage 26, as more clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing, with a partition or diaphragm which is preferably perforated, as by being provided with the perforations 86. The partition 36 extends diagonally across one of the ends of the cage 26, from a central point near the shaft to a point along the cylindrical end 29 of the cage 26. The partition 36 is adjacent an opening 37 substantially in the form of a quadrant through which the washed vegetables or the like are discharged. The opening 37 is preferably provided with a suitable removable cover-plate 38 having a handle 39 and provided with suitable locking means such as the catch 10 for maintaining the cover-plate 38 in position during the rotation of the cage 26.
There is thus provided a measuring device, generally indicated by reference char actor 41, which is open at the top and is closed at the bottom, so that during the rotation of the cage 26, said measuring device automatically receives a measured quantity of the washed vegetables, or the like, and upon the removal of the coverplate 38, due to the inclined or diagonal position of the partition 36, the washed vegetables are discharged or dumped onto any suitable support, such as the drainage means generally character 42.
In order to properly receive the washed vegetables automatically discharged from the cage 26 by means of the measuring and discharging means 41, I provide a support generally indicated by reference character 42, in the form of an inclined drain consisting of spaced bars 43 suitably supported in a frame 44:, the whole being slightly inclined, as more clearly shown in Figure 4 of the drawing. The drain 42 is supported on the standards 4-5 and reinforced bv means of the struts a6. V
Suitably associated with the machine, as by being located adjacent the drain 42, is a loadingdevice which may be in the form of a hopper 47 of generally conical indicated by reference form provided at its bottom with an opening 48 controlled by a gate valve 49 operated by a handle 50. This gate valve is so arranged with respect to the hopper 47 that it may readily and quickly be removed to render possible the prompt loading of the washed a d drained vegetables into any suitable coi 'ainer, such as a bag 51, and may be just as readily replaced to permit the accumulation of a further quantity of washed and drained vegetables for the next loading operation.

The operation of the machine and the advantages of the same in use are substantially as follows: When it is desired to wash ve t 1 es, orthe like, in the machine, tak in potatoes as an example. the tank 12 is titled with water up to the point indiited in Figure 1 of the drawing, and the door 31 is opened to permit charging the vegetables such as the aotatoes into the cage 26. The power is then turned on, causing the rotation of the cage 26 so that the vegetables are brought into thorough contact with the water 12 in the tank 12, and are thoroughly agitated so as to thoroughly clean the same.

Once the vegetables have been discharged onto the drain 42, they maybe pushed into the hopper t7 and thence loaded into the bag or other suitable container 51 by re moving the gate-valve 49. This series of operations maybe repeated as often as de sired.

The measuring and discharging operation is made automatic in a simple and very in genious 11'l&l1I16l,-&I1Cl the loading of the washed and drained vegetables into the suitable containers is rendered very convenient and expeditious.
What I claim is:
1. In a machine for washing vegetables and the like, a foraminous cage, means for rotating the same, and measuring and discharging means comprising a single receptacle, within said cage and rendered operative once during each rotation of the latter for receiving and retaining a quantity of the articles being washed in the machine during the rotation thereof and thereafter discharging the same.
2. In a machine for washing vegetables and the like, an open tank, a foraminous cage rotatable within the same, and measuring and discharging means comprising a single receptacle within said cage and rendered operative once during each rotation of the latter for receiving and retaining a quantity of the articles being washed in the machine during the rotation thereof and thereafter discharging the same.
3. In a machine for washing vegetables and the like, a foraminous cage having a removable cover-plate in one of its ends, means for rotating the same, and a partition within said cage obliquely disposed with respect to one of the ends of said foraminous cage near said cover-plate and cooperating with the same to form an open-ended receptacle comprising measuring and discharging means rendered operative by the rotation of the cage for receiving a quantity of the an ticles being washed in the machine and thereafter discharging the same.
4;. In a machine for washing vegetables and the like, an open tank, a foraminous cage having a removable cover-plate in one of its ends and being rotatable within the same, and a partition within said cage obliquely disposed with respect to one of the ends of said cage adjacent said cover-plate and cooperating with the same to form an open-ended receptacle comprising measuring means rendered operative once during each rotation of the cage for receiving a quantit-y of the articles being washed in the ma chine and thereafter discharging the same.
5. In a machine for washing vegetables and the like, an open tank, a foraminous cage having a removable cover-plate in one of its ends and being rotatable within the same, and a partition within said cage obliquely disposed with respect to one of the ends of said cage adjacent said cover-plate and cooperating with the same to form an open-ended receptacle comprising measuring and discharging means rendered operative once during each rotation of the latter for receiving and retaining a quantity of the articles being washed in the machine during the rotation thereof and thereafter discharging the same.
