WALTER E. SA'ITLER, 031" NEW YORK, N. Y.
Application filed Au ust 2, 1922.
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that l, amra it. Sarrann, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Casting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dental casting machines in which inlay fillings, crowns, bridges, plates and like parts are formed by casting in molds made of plastic material when set or in a rigid condition, by pouring molten metal and subjecting the same to air under pressure.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a selfcontained apparatus, partaking of the nature of a hand operated press, and in which the air pressure is automatically utilized at the proper moment and the air cut off upon release of the main actuating lever.
A further purpose is to provide an apparatus, simple in construction, effective in operation. not readily liable to become deranged and which can be produced at a moderate expense.
These and other similar objects, aims and purposes are attained by the novel construc tion, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a side clevational view of a casting machine made in accordance with the invention, illustrating its application and showing by broken lines the movable parts in their lowered position.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken through the base of the same showing the automatic valve arrangement.
In the embodiment of the machine shown, the numeral 10 designates the platform or sub-base, on an extension of which may be mounted an air reservoir, pump and gauge as usual, these parts being of common type, and being no part of the invention are not shown.
Supported by spacers 11 from the platform is a level base plate 12 from which rises a rigid standard 13 having forwardly extending arms 1 1 and 15 bored to slidably receive a plunger rod 16 having a knob 17 at its upper end and being connected at its lower'end with a head 18.
Pivoted to the side of the standard 18 is Serial No. 578,142.
a link 19 in turn pivoted to the arm 20 of a bell-crank lever having an upstanding manually operable handle or arm this lever being pivoted at 23 to the rod 16, the position of the several pivots and proportion of the link and lever being such that the handle 22 will hold the plunger when raised to contact with the stop pin 21 and also ailord a powerful action when operated.
The plunger head 18 contains an annular recess 24 and at the center thereof is an opening 25 into which the inlet 26 leads. this inlet being fixed in the hub of the head 18.
In axial alinement with the plunger is a disc 27 having a raised marginal band 28 and provided with a hub 29 on its lower side, said CllSc having a plurality of perforations 30 as hereafter described.
The hub 29 contains an annular recess 31 movably fitting the extension 32 of a plug screw;threaded into the plate 12, against its shouldered portion Said plug contains a bored opening above the chamber 36, a valve seat 37 and av recess 38 inmiediatcly above the valve seat, into which leads a transverse passage 39.
A conical valve 10 is fitted to the seat 37, the valve having a stem 11 fitting the bore and is secured in the disc 27 by its screwthreaded end 4-2.
The lower end of: the chamber 36 is internally threaded to receive the corresponding threaded end 13 of a cap at covering the chamber 36 and contains a seat for the lower end of a coiled compression spring 415, the upper end. of which abuts the bottom of the valve 10, maintaining it against its seat and holding the disc 27 in a raised position, the hub 29 of the disc making contact with the plate 12, acting as a limit stop, when the disc is fully depressed.
Fixed in the wall of the chamber 86 is an air inlet 46 and in vertical register thereabove is a similar fitting 4L7 communicating with the passage 39 leading to the recess above the valve.
Attached to the inlet 46 is a flexible tube 18 leading to a supply of compressed air, and engaged with the fitting 17 is another flexible tube a9 attached at its other end to the inlet fitting 26.
It will now be understood that when a flask 50 containing a mold, be placed on the disc 27 and the lever handle 22 be drawn down, the plunger head will enter the flask and when sufficient pressure has been exerted, the disc will be forced down, opening the valve 40, allowing the compressed air entering the chamber 36 to pass into the recess 38, out of the fitting 4L7, through the tube 49 into the head 18 andthcnce into the mold.
It will be equally apparent that when the pressure is relaxed the spring 4E5 will raise the disc and close the valve, shutting off the air automatically, avoiding waste of air, time and attention on part of the operator and materially facilitating the casting operation.
Although I have described my improvements with considerable detail and with respect to certain particular forms of my invention, I do not desire to be limited to such details since many changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention in its broadest aspect.
Having thus described my invention, what- I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A casting apparatus comprising abase,
a platform spaced thereabove, a column .fixed on said bottom, a plug fixed in said platform to extend downward into said base and having an extending upper end, a plate having a hub slidable on the extending end of said plug, said plate being receptive ot a flask, a plunger carried by said column, a bell-crank lever pivoted thereto engaging said plunger, and a single link combined with said lever for holding the plunger when in a raised position. v
2. A casting apparatus comprising a platform, a column fixed thereon, a plate rcceptive of a flask, said plate being vertically movable with reference to said platform, a
spring normally holding 7 said plate in a raised position, a plunger operable vertically in alinement with said plate, and means for automati ally conducting. compressed air from below said plate directly to the plunger when the latter is depressed. V
3. A casting apparatus comprising a platform, a plate spaced above said platform, a
disc vertically slidable over said plate, a
chamber below said plate, a valve in said. chamber, an inlet to said chamber, an outlet above said valve, a plunger, a single tubular connection from said outlet to said plunger and means for automatically opening said valve upon the depression of said plunger.
4-. A casting apparatus comprising in combination with a flask and a source of air under compression, of means for resiliently supporting the flask, a plunger operative with respect to the flask, a chamber below said flask support, said chamber being in an outlet above said valve, a manually op".
orable plung 'cr fitted to said flask, and single flexible air connections from said outlet to said plunger.
in testimony whereof I have signed my name to this application.
