To all whom it'may concern:
' Be it lrnown that 1, Jenna S. Boonwanrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Connecting-Rod -Straightening and Testing Devices; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescri tion of the invention, such as will enab e others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an im roved connecting rod straightening and testin device and one object ofthe invention is to provide a structure of the character described so constructed that the connecting rod may be mounted above a base or platform with its bearing extending at substantially right angles to the base and to provide a gauge which rests upon but is unconnected with the base so that. it may be brought into engagement with a wrist pin passed through the smaller bearing otthe connecting rod and by being brought into engagement with the wrist pin above and below the smaller bearing, the angle of the wrist pin and bearing with respect to the horizontal base readily ascertained.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this device that the connecting rod may be mounted to extend substantially horizontal to the base with its bearings extending substantially in a vertical plane and the connecting rod securely held so that if it is found that the wrist pin passed through the smaller bearing does not extend at right angles'to the horizontally disposed base, the connecting rod may be properly bent to position the wrist pin at right angles to the base.

The base or platform 1 will be formed of cast metal or any other suitable material and will be provided with a flat upper face extending in a horizontal plane when this base is support.

A sleeve or cylinder 6 which may be termed a pivot post fits loosely upon the stem 3 so that it can turn thereon and will be held in place by a washer 7 and securing nut 8 which fits upon the threaded upper end portion of this stem 3 above the pivot post or cylinder 6. As previously explained, more than one of these cylinders 6 will be provided so that the proper cylinder may be put in place according to the size of the large bearing 9 which formspart ill tit)
placed upon a work bench or other ltl of the connecting rod 10 and is to be clamped about this cylinder. This connecting rod is of a conventional structure and has one end provided with the relatively large bearin 9 and its other end provided with the rehitively small bearing 11 through which is 'tobe passed the wrist pin 12. The wrist pin 12 when inplace as shown in Fig. 1 should extend parallel to the cylinder 6 about which the large bearing '9 is clamped and since this cylinder 6 extends at right angles to the base 1, it will be readily seen that if the wrist in when in place is found to extend at right angles to the base no adjustment nor straightening of the connecting rod is necessary, whereas if it is found that the wrist pin does not extend at right angles to the base when in place, then the connecting rod must be bent a sufiicient amount to position the wrist pin at right angles to the base;

The upstanding arm 14 is not as wide as the lower base-forming arm 13 and the.
end portion of the lower arm 13 is reduced in thickness to one side of the upstanding arm as shown at 16-so that the pointer 17 which extends longitudinally of the upstanding arm 14 and is pivotally mounted adja cent its lower end as shown at 18 may have swingin movement without the heel portion 19 striking the lower arm. The 'feeler '1 is vertically disposed and pivotally connected with the upstanding arm 14 in front of the pointer 17 and-isprovided with forwardly extending arms 21 for engaging the wrist pin above and below the relatively small bearin 11 at the free end of the connecting rod. he spring 22 which is carried by the upstanding arm 14 and engages the pointer 17 above the pivot pin 18 holds the heel 19 in engagement with the feeler 'and it will thus be seen that when the feeler is positioned to engage the wrist pin above and below the bearing 11, the angle of the wrist pin will be assumed by the feeler and the pointer will indicate upon the scale 15 the angular relation of the wrist pin and bearin 11 to the horizontally disposed upper face i the wrist pin and bearing 11 are positioned at a right angle with respect to the base the pointer will be at the center of the scale as shown in Fig. 1, whereas if the wrist pin is not at a right angle but slightly out of a perpendicular position, the pointer will indicate thisby moving to one side or the other of the center of this scale marking. Swinging movement of the feeler is limited naraeee' it'll s uare as it may be termed, will then be' p aced upon the base 1 and moved upon the base so that the arms 21 of the feeler 21) y will engage the wrist pin above and below the bearing 11.. If itis found that. thepointer 17 is positioned at'the center of the scale markings 15, then no adjustment is necessary but if it is found that the pointer extends to one side or the other of the center served and if necessary proper adjustment made." Itwill thus beseen that with this device, the connecting rod can be very easily and quickly tested to see if the bearings 9 and 11 are in proper relation to each other.
After the connecting rod has been testedand straightened if necesasry, it will be removed and another put in place" or the deyice. put away until again to be used. 1. In a connecting rod straightening and testing device, a base having a plane horizontal surface, a, pivot post projecting therefrom at a right angle, said post being. ada ted to hold the connecting rod by one ofits earings, and a gauge resting on the surface of said base and including a horizontalarm and a vertical arm, the vertical arm being provided with a, scale, a pointer pivoted to said vertical arm and co-operating with said scale, and an upright pivoted beam pivotally connected with the vertical arm and contacting with said pointer.
2. In a'connecting rod straightening and testing device, a horizontal base with a plane horizontal surface,v a cylinderprojecting from said base at right angles to saidsurface, and a gauge resting on the surface of said base and including a horizontal arm J and a vertical arm, the vertical arm being r size substituted for the for resting upon the plane surface of said base and including an upright arm, an indicator movabl connected with said upright arm, and a eeler movably connected with 15 the upright arm for operative engagement with said indicator and operative engagement with a pin fitted in the other bearing of the connectng rod.
