IMPROVEMENT IN MITERBQXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147, 7611, dated February 24, 1874; application filed d June 30, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. GAUSE, of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Miter-Boxes, of which the following is a speciiioation:
My invention relates to an improvement in miter-boXes, in such manner as to be adjustable for the purpose of cutting both ruiters and bevels at any required angle, as hereinafter described.
Figure l is a perspective view, showing the dial-plates K and E, saw-guides O, and adjustable back B. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section. Fig. 3 is a backY View, showing the mannerof adjusting the same.
A is the board upon which the lumber to be cutis placed. B is the adjustable back, (sllOWIl in Fig. 3 5) C O C O, saw-guides; M, the bas@- board, upon which the whole is mounted. V is aroclring beam, whieh carries the saw-guides O. The rear end of this beam is pivoted at G. The front end carries the pointer R, to indicate the degree on the dial-plate K. The outer end of thepin or pointer carries the vertical pointer P, to indicate the degree, of bevel it is desired to cut 011 the dial-plate E, the rocking beam being held in any'required position by tightening the tl1umbnut O.
When it is desired to move the rocking beam V to the right or left to cut anyrequired miter, the thumb-nut N is loosened, which releases the clamp L, and allows the dial-plate E to slide around on the projection D on the outer edge of the arc to which it is attached.
The back boards B are adjustable, by means of the slots T and thumb-nuts H, to allow either board to slide out of the way of the sawguides, as it may be necessary toturn the rocking `beam to the right or left in cutting bevels.
One of the features of my ruiter-box is the construction of the saw-guides O, the same being of rubber tubing, with brass or other metal tubes Uinserted, through which thepins S pass. The holes in the ends of the rocking beam through which these pins pass are slightly elongated, to allow of adjustment of the sawguides through means of the nuts Y.
I do not wish to confine myself to rubber tubing, as any soft or yielding material-may be used; orthe saw-guides maybe made of wood, either With or without the tubes U inserted.
Having thus fullydescribed my invention, Y
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The rocking lever V, 4carrying the sawguides O, in combination with the dial-platesK and E, all combined and operating as set forth, for the purpose specified.
JOHN L. GAUSE.
