BELT BUCKLE.
Application filed August 19, 1922. Serial No. 582,931.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOWELL W. SHIELDS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt Buckles, of which the following is a specification. v
The present invention relates to buckles and more particularly to the type in which there is provided a buckle frame with a clamping surface thereon, and a clamping member pivotally mounted on said frame and having means to cooperate with said clamping surface and also a strap end anchoring means connected thereto, an object of this invention being to provide a clamping member which may be readily stamped or pressed from sheet metal to provide a plurality of gripping edges preferably situated at diiferent distances from the turning of the axis of the clamping member.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described: the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: a
Fig. 1 is a face view of a buckle constructed in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the buckle showing the clamping member in clamping position;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clamping member and the anchoring means;
ig. 4 is a longitudinal section showing the buckle shifted to release the strap end;
Fi 5 is a perspective view of the transversely extending gripping piece;
Fig. 6 and Fig. 7 are respectively a plan view and a transverse section of another embodiment of the clamping member, showing the gripping piece formed with two gripping edges and a pivot pin held between the gripping piece and the laterally turned portion of the body of the clamping member;
Fig. 8 and Fig. 9 are similar views showing the gripping piece formed with two gripping edges and also with the pivoting means;
Fig. 10 and Fig. 11 are similar views showing the gripping piece formed with two gripping edges and secured to the body of the clamping member in a slightly different manner from that illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9; and
Fig. 12 and Fig. 13 are similar views of still another embodiment of the invention with the gripping piece in channel form and receiving in its channel an additional gripping piece.
eferring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the front plate of the buckle frame having a clamping surface 2 on its rear face and provided with rearwardly extending side flanges 3 which form the supporting means for the clamping means.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 to 1, the clamping means embodies a main or body portion 4 which carries anchoring means, in this instance, in the form of a loop 5 for one end of a strap. or belt 6. This main or body portion may be pressed or stamped from sheet metal and has a laterally extending portion 7 which, in this instance, is formed with a gripping edge 8. Abutting one face of this gripping edge is a gripping piece 9 formed with a gripping edge 10 and held in abutment with the piece 8 by headed projections 11 on such gripping piece extending through openings in the body portion 4 and upset at 12 to secure said gripping piece in position. The pivoting means, in this embodiment, is in the form of pintles 13 extending from opposite ends of the gripping piece and turning in openings in the side flanges 3 of the buckle frame.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 the parts are the same except that the gripping piece 9 is provided with two pressed up gripping edges 10 and instead of providing the pivoting means on the gripping piece, a pivot pin 13 is provided which rests on the body portion l at the j unction of the main portion thereof with the laterally turned portion 7, the gripping piece being bent to conform to said pivot pin to confine said pivot pin in position. The gripping piece has laterally extending projections 11 extending therefrom through openings in the laterally turned portion 7 and upset at their free ends to secure the gripping piece in place.
The embodiment illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9 is the same as that illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5 except that the gripping piece 9 has two the corner formed thereof andpassing through openings in The embodiment shown in Figs. 12 and 13 has the body portion 4 formed with a short laterally turned portion 7f? which does not have'a clamping edge. The gripping piece Ql is bent into U form with gripping edges 10 on the free ends of its two arms, a channel 14 being provided between these arms to receivea gripping piece 15, Both gripping pieces 9 and 15 are securedinplace by projections 11- on the gripping piece 15 passed throughopenings in the gripping piece 9 and; the body portion 4 and having their free ends upset to securesaid projections in the epenin-gs. H The pivotal mounting is secured by providing a pivot pin 13 which lies in between the laterally turned portion 7 and the body portion a, the gripping member 9 being pressed to provide agroove 16 to conform to said pivot pm: i 1
[In all embodiments of the invention, the main body portion of the clamping means may be formed from stamped or pressed material and has separategripping pieces also adapted to be formed of stamped or pressed material and secured to such body a latera'll-y turned portion which portion. The main body portionalso has forms an abutment for the gripping piece. This, laterally turnedportion may or may not have a gripping edge and, if provided, this edge should preferably lie nearer to the axis of turningofthe clamping means than the gripping edge on the transversely extending gripping piece. The'transverse'ly extending grippingpiece may have one or two gripping edges and in one instance the two gripping edges are provided by making the gripping piece of, vU shape preferably with a channel betw'eenthe arms in which an additional gripping piece may be arranged. The pivot means may be formed of parts of the clamping member as by providing lateral projections thereon, or, a separate pivot pin may be held between the parts of theclamping member.
What I claim as my nvention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1. The combination with a buckle frame having a clamping surface, of a clamping member pivotedto said frame and having a main body portion formed of sheet material provided with a laterally turned portion and a separately. formed elongated gripping piece secured to the main body portion parallel with the axis of turning of said member, abutting said laterally turned portion, and provided with a clamping edge, the main body portion having opening formed therein on the side of the'separ'ately formed gripping piece opposite the side abutting the laterally turned portion to provide a strap anchoring loop.
2. The combination with a buckle frame having a clamping surface, of a clamping member pivoted to said frame and having a mainbody portion formed of sheet material provided with a laterally turned portion, a separately formed gripping piece secured to the main body portion parallel to the axis of turning of said grippinginember, abutting said laterally turned portion and provided with two parts of the clamping member being provided with pintles, the main body portion having an opening formed therein on the side of the separately formed gripping pieces opposite the side abutting the later-- ally turned portion to provide a strap anchoring loop. v V V 3. The combination with a buckle frame having a clamping surface, of a clamping member pivoted to said frame and having a main body portion formed of sheet inaterial provided with a laterally turned portion and a separately formed gripping piece secured to the main body portion parallel with the axis of turning of said gripping member, abutting said laterally turning portion and provided with two gripping edges located at difl'erent distances from the axis of turning of the clamping member, the main body portion having an opening formed therein on the side of the separately formed gripping piece opposite the side abutting the laterally turned portion to provide a strap anchoring loop.
4. The combination with a having a clamping surface, of a clamping member pivoted to said frame and having a main body portion formed from sheet material and a separately formed gripping piece secured to the main body portion parallel with the axis of turning of said clamping member and having a U shape in cross section, the edges of both arms being provided with gripping edges located at different distances from the axis of turning of the clamping member, the main body portion having an opening formed therein on the side of the separately iormedfgripping piece oppositethe side abutting the laterally turned portion to provide a strap anchoring loop.
5. The combination with a buckle frame having a clamping surface, of a clamping member pivoted to said frame and having 1,477,ooo 3 a main body portion, an elongated gripping vided with a gripping edge located at a piece of channel form secured to the body difi'erent distance from the axis of turnin portion and provided with gripping edges of the clamping member than either of the 39 on opposite sides of the channel at different gripping edges of the channeled gripping 5 distances from the axis of turning of the piece, and strap anchoring means'secured to clamping member, and an additional gripsaid clamping member.
