IMPROVEMENT IN BRBED FENCES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. lll'j, dated February 24, 18?(4 application filed January 7, 1874.

To all whom t may concer/n:

Be it known that I, IsAAc L. ELLwoon, of De Kalb, county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Barbed Fence, of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates particularly to a barbed fence; and the object thereof is to prevent animals from rubbing against the fence, and thereby breaking down or otherwise injuring the same. The nature of my invention consists in brads or prickers cut or stamped out of a single piece of metal, each having four points, so that when attached to a dat rail on the fence and bent as hereinafter described, itwill present a sharp point both toward the front and rear of the felice, as well as upward `and downward.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, Iwill now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fencepanel embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the line w x, Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 shows various forms of brads or prickers before they are bentand inserted in place. Y

A A represent fence-posts of any desired form and dimensions, connected by means of wires or rails B B, in any suitable manner to form panels between them. At a suitable height from the ground is attached a horizontal metal strip or rail, C, to the fence-posts A A. This strip is cut at suitable intervals with slits, two and two parallel with each other,

or through each of these loops is inserted a brad or pricker,7 D. Each of these brads or prickers is cut or stamped out of a single piece of sheet metal, and has two parallel sides, d d, and in each end is cut or stamped a V-shaped notch, e, so as to leave four sharp points, a' tv, two at each end. lIhe notches c e may be cut in various forms, three of which I have shown in Fig. 3 5 but I do not confine myself to these, as they may be changed or varied in many ways without departing from thc spirit of my invention.

The brad or pricker D thus forlned is passed through the loop a in `the 'strip C, and one point at each end bent outward at right angles, one forward and one toward the rear, leaving one point pointing upward and one downward.

The points of the pricker which :are bent may pass around the edge of the strip, or extend from near the center of the strip. In either case they are bent so that they cannot drop out.

Animals coming up to the fence will run against some of the points m, and naturally go away from the fence, thus preserving it from being broken down or injured by them; it also prevents animals froln crawling through the fence. l

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination in a barbed felice, of the rail C, provided with the loops a a, with the brads or prickers D D, each made of a single piece of metal with four points, se mar, inserted in the loops, and bent to present a sharp point above and below and on each side of the rail, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
