LAUNDRY STAND.
Application filed January 18, 1922-. Serial No. 530,098.
laundry stands and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly efficient in use.
A further object ofthe invention is the provision of an all metal stand which will be light in structure and durable in use, one consisting of extensible supporting elements.
Other objects'will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a laundry stand embodying the invention showing the supporting elements in their extended position; 1
Fig. 2 is a sectional detail view of the same, taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side elevational View, of the same, showing the supporting elements in their retracted position;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a wringe-r support embodied in the invention;
of one of the corners or" the stand to more fully illustrate the extensible parts embodied in the invention;
Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional detail view taken substantially on line 6-6 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 7 is a sectional detail view taken substantially on line 77 of Fig. 5; and
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary sectional detail view taken substantially on line 88 of Fig. 2.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises extensible supporting elements A and B arranged to receive a wash tub l0 and a wash basket 11, when in use. The supporting element A comprises a frame 12' formed from a continuous angular member bent in the shape of a rectangle, as shown, the opposite ends of said member being spot-welded or fixedly secured together by any suitable securing means. The frame 12 is reenforced by angular reenforcing members 13, extending parallel with the sides of the frame and fixedly secured to the ends thereof by spot welding or the like. The reenforcing members 13 are reenforced by U-sh'aped braces 14 which are fixedly secured to the sides of the frame 12 and the reenforcing 1nem-' bers13. The frame supportinglegs 15 are each formed from a single piece of wire,
bent centrally upon itself and twisted as lustrated in the drawings. The upper opposite end portions 16 of the wires are bent so as to diverge from each other, and the outer ends of said portions are bent to form a loop 17 through which a nut receiving bolt by transversely extending metal strips 22 which are secured thereto bybending the opposite ends back upon the strips so as to embrace the wire members 19, the bent ends being fixedly secured to the said strips by spot-welding or suitable rivets. TThe frame 12 carried oppositely disposed channel shaped guide members 28 which extend parallel with respect to the sides of the frame and are supported in position by hangers 24.
Associated with the supporting element A and mounted on one end thereof is a rec tangular support-C, said support comprising vertically extending socket members 25 provided with lateral cars 26 to facilitate securing the socket members to the frame 12 in spaced relation with respect to each other. The socket members 25 are braced by wire members 26 which are secured to lateral ears 26, formed on the socket mem- I wardly inclined drain portions 29 is carried by leg portions 30 which are secured to the drain guide 28 by any suitable means, said drain guide being formed of sheet metal and provided with upwardlyturned sides 31 as best shown in Fig. 4. A wringer receiving I bar 32 is mounted to centrally transverse formed of sheet metal or be cast.
the drain guide 28 and is secured to upwardly extending portions 33 formed integral with the upwardly turned ends 31, said portions 83 being provided with lateral flanges 3 1 which are bent to embrace the sides of the wringer bar 32. At the point where the wringer clamps 35 engage the bar 32, I provide metal reenforcing plates 36 to prevent the clamps from cutting into the bar 32, which in this instance is formed of wood. If desired the bar 32 may be When such is the case the plates 36 are not needed. The leg portions 30 are adapted to pass into the socket members 25 and may be adjusted in any desired position, said legs being held in their adjusted position byhand bolts 37 which are carried by the socket members 25 as shown. To support the socket members more rigidly, I provide a wire member 38 which is arranged between the socket members and secured to lateral ears 89 formed thereon.
The extensible supporting element B comprises an angular fraineaO formed from a single piece of material bent in substantially the same manner as the angular frame member 12 of the supporting element A. The opposite sides ofthe frame 40 are mounted to slidably engage the channel shaped guide members 23. The frame 40 is also reenforced by angular reenforcing members ll which are secured thereto by spot-welding or the like. The outer end of the said frame carries supporting legs 12 which are formed and connected to the said frame substantially in the same manner as the supporting legs 15. The supporting legs 12 are braced by wire members 13 and M, the wire members 43 being secured to bracket members 45 carried by each of the legs 4L2. The other wire members 4 1 are secured to the bracket members 45 and the end 45 of the frame 40. The outward movement of the support ing element B is governed by stop plates 46 carried on the end 15 of the frame &0 opposite the corners thereon, said stops be ing adapted to engage depending Ushaped stop members 47 which are carried by the frame 12, as best shown in Fig. 5.
From the construction as herein set forth, I provide extensible supporting elements, the operation of which is obvious from the description herein stated. Vhen the supa porting elements are in their extended position they are adapted to support a wash tub on one side of the wringers support C and a. wash basket on the opposite. side, or support a wash tub on both sides of the said wringer support, as will best meet the requirements of the user.
To facilitate the extension of the supporting elements A and B, I provide a handle 18 arranged between the reenforcing members 13, and a handle 4.9 fixedly secured to the end, of the frame 40between the members 41, as shown. By grasping. the handles 18 and 49 the supporting elements can be easily extended and retracted. As stated herein the wire members 26 serve to brace the socket members-25, however, they also serve another purpose. As best shown in Fig. 2. wire members 26, which prevents the tub 10 from being pushed off the extensible supporting element A, especially when pressure is applied to the tub when the user of the laundry stand is in the act of rubbing the clothes onv a wash board. 7
l/Vhen the extensible parts are in their retracted position the same are locked in said position by means of a hook 50 which is swingingly carried by one of the wire members 19, said hook being adapted. to
engage the wire member &3 when in look;-
ing position.
The laundry stand herein set forth beingformed of alight metal enables the userto conveniently move the stand from one place to another. The cost of manufacturing improved stand is small and the stand will be serviceable to the house-wife.
\Vhile I have'illustrated and described,
the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited the sides of the tub 10 engage the to the precise details of the construction set forth, but desire to; avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims. I Having described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patents is elements slidably connected together and comprising tops having rim portions angularly-shaped in cross section, oppositely disposed channel members arranged in parallel relation beneath the. top of one of said supporting elements. and adapted to slidably receive the top of the other supporting element, means carrying said channel mem bers in position beneath thetop of the adjacent supporting element, and substantially U-shaped members carried at one end of JOSEPH. S. FI'ALA.
