To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, SUNKER ABAJI BIsEY, a subject of theKin of Great Britain, and a resident of New of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Assembly Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to the assembling of cast type, leads, quads and rules and the objects of the invention are to provide practical mechanism for quickly assembling the cast elements in rows of predetermined length and for transferring said rows into a galley.
The invention involves certain novel features of construction, combinations and relations of parts, as will be clear from the following specification which is to be read in conjunction with the drawings accompanyin the same.

The device as illustrated involves a drum T rotatably supported on suitable shafting 8 and having longitudinal channels 9 about its periphery to receive the rows 10 of cast type or the like. 1
These rows of castings are fed into the roove or channel at the upper side of the drum from a packing channel 11 which ordinarily receives the type directly from the casting mechanism, the castings being advanced along this packing channel by a suitable feeding device such. as:a reciprocating pusher.
The number of castings inserted inthe groove of the-drum depends uponthe setting of an adjustable end guide 12 which, as shown in Figure 2, normally stands in the groove and is adjusted by means of the screw'13. Thisscrew turns in a screw seat provided inthe bearing member 14 which is pivoted at 15 to the upper end of an escapement lever 16, the latter being pivoted at 17 on the supporting shaft 8 (Figure 2).
Y -The escapement lever is constructed after the manner of'typewriter escapement mechork, county and State anism having one tooth 1 8' engaging with the teeth of ratchet 19 for holding the drum in its type-receiving. position, and/a second tooth 2O offset laterally from thefi'rst and disposed in rear thereof so that on'the forward or outward rockingfmotion 'of the lever the first holding tooth 18 will be released from the'ratchet and the second tooth 20 will be interposed in front of thenext tooth of the ratchet, the return movement of the lever under the impulse of spring 21 serving to restore the first tooth 18 into holding engagement with this last mentioned tooth of the ratchet. From this it will be understood that when the channel at the top of the drum is packed full, the escapement lever will be rocked outwardly so as to permit the drum to rotate in a left handed direction, in Figure 1, der the weight of the previously filled channels, the escapement teeth cooperating with the ratchet to catch and hold the drum after it is rotated far enoughto bring the next groove into position for filling,

is provided with inclines or cam shoulders 22-which, in the rotation of the drum, ride beneath a roller 23 on the shank of the gage 12 o as to rock this element about its pivotal support 15 and thereby lift the gage clear of the groove and enable it to drop smoothly into the next groove. v K
t In the course of rotation of the drum the type are held in place in the channel by an overstanding curvilinear guard 24 and by .a curved gage 25 at one end and a similar gage 26 at the opposite end of, the drum.
The galley structure is indicated generally at27 and comprises a suitable supporting table provided with a fixed wall 28 at one end and an adjustable wall 29 st the opposite end, the adjustable wall being shifted and secured as by means ofthe slot {and screw construction 30 to accord with the positioning of the trip gage 12 (Figure 3).
The adjustable end 29 of the galley carries the end gage 25 as best shown in Figure 1, so that said end gage will be automatically adjusted when, the galley adjustment .is
made. The other end-gage 26 may be cared at 32- and have their upper ends standing in position to engage the pins 38 on the ends of the retractable slides 34 forming the forward sides of the channels 9. These slides are shown as having lugs 35 detachably keyed thereto as by means of a dovetail connection 36 (Figure l) which lugs have a bead 0r beads to fit the nick or nicks formed in the sides of the type.
' The trip levers are shown as operated by means of suitable cams 37 on the drive shaft 38, connection being made with the trip levers by means of slides 39 having rolls 4O bearing on the cams, said slides operating in guides 41 and having yoke's 42 engaging the lower ends of the levers, expansion springs 43 operating on the levers and serving to hold the rollers on the slide's properly engaged with the cams. \Vhe'n the support for therow of type is thus retracted by the mechanism'described the said row of type will drop as a unit into a. channel 44 in front of reciprocating packer which is actuated from a second cam 46 through the medium of a rock lever. 47 carrying a roll 48 hearing on the cam, said lever being pivoted at its lower end at 49 and having a head at its upper end at 50 engaged between a shoulden 5'1 and an adjustable abutment screw 52 carriedby the packing slide. This packing slide is retracted by a spring 53 which serves also to hold the cam roll 48 engaged with the actuating cam 46.
The adjustable end wall 29' of the galley carries a gage extension projecting into the channel 44 and the packing slide 45 is shown provided with a slot or groove 55 in its foi ward face to receive said end gage irrespective of the adjustment of the end wall 29.
The row of type dropped into the channel 44 is packed closely therein by means of an end feeder 56 (Figure 2) attached to the upper end of a lever 57 which is pivoted at its lower end 58 and is actuated by a cam 59 on shaft 38, a spring 60 being interposed between the head of the feeder and the lever 57 to compensate for variations in the length of the row of type. Lever 57 is shown as pressed against the face cam 59 by a spring 62. p
The cam shaft may be suitably driven, as by means of a chain engaged with the sprocket wheel on said shaft.
The packer slide 45 may cooperate with the fixed galley wall 28, as indicated in Figure 4, to form a cutter for severing the excess of a strip or rule, such as shown at 10".
What I claim is 2- 1. In apparatus of the character described, a rotating drum having longitudinally extending channels to each receive a row of type or the like, means for feeding the type lengthwise of the drum into said channel's, means for automatically releasing said drum as each channel is filled to permit rotation of the drum under the weight of the type and means for automatically discharging a row of the type when each channel reaches a predetermined position.
2. In apparatus of the character described, a rotating drum having longitudinally extending channels to each receive a row of type or the like, means for feeding the type lengthwise of the drum into said channels, means'for automatically releasing said drum as each channel is filled, to permitrotation of-the drum under the weight of the type, means for automatically discharging a row of the type when each cha n'- nel reaches a predetermined positiori, a galley and means for packing the discharged rows of type in said galley. 3. In apparatus of the character described, a rotating drum having longitudinally extending channels to each receive a row of type or the like, means for feeding the type lengthwise of the drum into said channels, means for automatically releasing said drum as each channel is'filled, to permit rotation of the drum under the weight of the type, means for automatically dis-- charging a row of the type when each chan- 1 F nel reaches a predetermined position, a galley and means for packing the discharged rows of type in said galley, said means including a reciprocating packer.
4. In apparatus of the character described, a rotating drum havin channels to receive a row of type or the llke, means for automatically effecting step by step rotation of said drum as the channels are filled, means for automatically discharging a row of the type when each channel reaches a predetermined position, a galley, means for packing the discharged rows of type in said galley, said means including a reciprocating'pa'cker and a feeder for packing the discharged rows of ty e into position in front of said packer.
5. Inapparatus of the-character described,
a rotating drum having channels to receive a row of type or the like, means for auto matically eflecting step by steprotation '0: said drum as the channels are filled, means for automatically discharging a row ofthe type when each channel reaches a predetermined position and including trip mechanism and retractable walls for the type channels adapted to be actuated by I said trip mechanism. 1

In apparatus of the character described, a rotating drum provided with'channels hav ing retractable 'w'alls, means for feeding rows of type or the like intosaid channels,-'means for effecting intermittent rotation of said drum and means for automatically retract ing the retractable walls when the channels stand in a predetermined position;
7. In apparatus of the character described,
a rotating drum provided with channels having retractable Walls, means for feeding roWs of type or the like into said channels, means for effecting intermittent rotation of said drum, means for automatically retracting the retractable walls when the channels stand in a predetermined position and detachable lugs carried by the retractable walls for engagement with nicks in the sides of the cast t e.

In apparatus of the character disclosed, a rotatable drum provided with channels extending substantially longitudinally of the axis thereof and adapted each to'receive a row of type packed longitudinally thereinto and a device for controlling rotation of the drum positioned to be engaged by the heads of the inserted rows of type.
9. In apparatus of the character described, a carrier for rows of type, a galley positioned to receive the rows of type from said carrier and a packer for. placing the rows of type in the galley, said packer and galley having cooperating elements for cutting a length of cast material.
10. In apparatus of the character described, a carrier for rows of type, a galley positioned to receive the rows of type from said carrier and a packer for placing the rows of type in the galley, said packer having a groove in the face thereof and the galley having an end gage to fit in said groove.
11. In apparatus of the character de scribed, a carrier for roWs of type, a galley positioned to receive the rows of type from said carrier, a packer for placing the rows of type in the galley, said galley having an adjustable wall and a gage or gages carried by said wall and adjustable therewith.
12. In apparatus of the character described, a carrier for rows of type, a galley positioned to receive thevrows of type from said carrier, a packer for placing the rows of type in the galley and a feeder for engagement with the end of a row of type positioned in front of the packer.
13. The structure of claim 8 in which said control device is adjustable to determine the lengths of the inserted rows of type.
1 1. The structure of claim 8 in which the type are packed into the channels when said channels are positioned in the upper arc of revolution of the drum, whereby the weight of the insertedtype will assist in rotating the drum.
15. The structure of claim 14 in which the channels are open and when filled are covered by a relatively stationary guard.
16. The structure of claim 8 in which the channels have retractable walls and in which means are provided for automatically retracting such walls at a predetermined point in the revolution of the drum.
17. Thestructure of claim 16 in which a packer is provided for bodily shifting the rows of type as they are discharged from the channels.
18. The structure of claim 17 in which said packer constitutes one member of a pair of cutter elements.
