To aZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, SUNKER ABAJI BisEin a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nozzle Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to type casting machines and particularly to the nozzle construction thereof.
vide simple and effective mechanism for conducting the molten metal in a direct line from the metal pot to the mold chamber, practically without'obstructing the flow and in su'cli a way as to insure complete charging of the mold chamber under iiow pressure.
Another important object is to prevent chilling of tlie metal in the end of the nozzle by contact with the relatively cooler mold.
A further object is to make the nozzle construction adaptable to the various adjust ments of the type casting mold.
These objects I have accomplished by novel construction and arrangement of parts, certain embodiments of which are disclosed in the accompanying drawing, in connection with which I wish it understood that the same is illustrative in character, inasmuch as various other changes and modifications may be 'made without depar-` ture from the true spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined and claimed.

Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of. an improved type mold equipped with my improvements, the parts being shown in the casting or mold charging position.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view of the same parts shown in the position they assume after the cast is made.
Figures 3 and 4 are fragmentary sectional views of slightly modified forms of the invention.
The invention of the present application is, for the most part, a division from my application Serial No. 164,199 in which the mold structure is particularly disclosed and broadly claimed. Forthat reason, it is only necessary in the present application to state that the mold shown consists-of upper and lower mold blocks 5 and 6 spaced to pro- .vide a mold chamber and each carrying a side wall member projecting from one mold `members carried thereby.

This adjustable nozzle support is provided with a'bore or guide passage 19 eX- tending toward the mold and slidingly receiving theY nozzle 20. This nozzle has a metal passage 21 to register with the throatv 16 and a longitudinal passage 22 in which soL the choker or cut-off valve 23` reciprocates i in such a way as to open or close the metal outlet at the end of the nozzle.
At the endl of the nozzle and interposed between the same and the back of the mold chamber is a nipple plate 24 having a rounded or concave seat 25 receiving the similarly rounded ends of the nozzle and choker. This nipple plate further has a flaring metal outlet 26 to register with the mold gate 10.
The nipple plate may besupported various ways. In Figures 1 and 2 I have shown the same as yieldingly and rockably guided and supported at the end of the V nozzle by guide studs 27 and springs 28, the nipple plate having guide openings 29 loosely receiving said studs and the springs being interposed between the nipple vplate and the back 'of' the mold so as to normally force the nipple plate away from the mold surfaces. This outward movement of the nipple plate is limited'in the present disclosure by the nuts 30 adjustably engaged" on the outer threaded endsof the studs.
In the operation of the parts thus far described, when a cast is to be made, the `nozzle and choker in the relation indicated in Figure 2, are advanced to press the nipple plate firmly against the back or gate wall of iool themold chamber. Just Abefore the piston of the metal pot forces the metal up through the throat, the choker is withdrawn suiciently to clear the mouth of the nozzle, as shown in Figure 1, and the metal is thereupon forced directly into the mold. Immediately the cast is made,lthe choker is advanced to close the port in the nozzle so as to cut off the metal and prevent any metal remaining in the nozzle end. The nozzle with the choker in this position is then retracted, enabling the springs 28 to react and separate the nipple plate from the' mold surface.
This prevents the nipple plate and nozzle from cooling by continued contact with the mold surface and enables the port 26 in the nipple plate to clear the jet on the end of the casting, as indicated in Figure 2. The described movements of the nozzle and choker may be effected by suitable cams operating on the levers 31 and 32 which are shown as adjustably connected with the nozzle and choker respectivel by the pin and slot connections, indicatedy at 33 and 34.
A spring 35 is also indicated as operatin on the choker to hold the same normally a vanced in position, closing'the inc'ined passage in the nozzle and the port inthe nipple plate. The nipple plate is shown as having a beveled or conical forward portion 36 seating loosely in a corerspondingly shaped recess 37 at the back wall of the mold.
The construction shown in Figure l3 is similar to the one described, except for the Yfact that'l the nozzle which is here designated 38 is not retracted, but remains at all times'in engagement with the nipple plate 39, which'latter also remains in contact with the Inold`wall. Inthis construction it is simply necessary to reciprocate the choker, the lever 32 which performs 4this function bei'hg shown in this instance as extending within the upper part of the metal pot, as does also the choker', which enables any metal in the choker into the pot..
In the construction illustrated in Figure 4, the choker or cut-off valve is in the form of a sliding plate 40 which reciprocates vertically in between the back wall of the mold and the nipple plate y 41. This sliding choker has a port 42 to register with the mold gate and with the ports in the nipple plate and in the end of the nozzle 43. After a cast is made with this form of the invention, the choker plate 40 is lowered into the dotted line position indi-cated to carry the port 42 therein down into register with a knock-out plunger 44 which is actuated by a reciprocating lever 45 to eject the slug 46 from the port 42.` This construction possesses certain of the advantages of the other forms described, and has certain additional passage draining backA advantages fas will -be apparent to those skilled in the art.
What. I claim is:
1. The combination with a type casting mold provided with a mold chamber having agate opening in one wall thereof,of a metal charging nozzle, a nipple pate movably interposed between said nozzle and the gate Wall of the mold chamber, and means for reciprocating the nozzle with respect to the nipple plate.
2. The combination with a type casting mold provided with a mold chamber having a gate opening in one wall thereof, of a metal charging nozzle, and a nipple plate movably interposed between said nozzle and the gate wall of the mold chamber, said nipple` plate having a beveled projection and the mold having a correspondingly shaped seat .receiving the same.
3. Ina machine of the character described, a mold having a gate opening in one Wall thereof, a metal 'charging' nozzle having a bore in line with the gate opening and inc-lined throat leading to said bore, a choker reciprocating in'said bore, and a nipple plate interposed between the nozzle and gate wall 0f the mold and provided with a port in line with the gate opening.
4. In a machine ofthe character described, a mold having a gate opening in one wall thereof, a metal charging nozzle having a bore in line with the gate opening and inclined throat leading to said bore, a choker reciprocating in said bore, a nipple plate interposed between the nozzle and gate Wall of the mold and provided with a port in line with the gate opening, and means for advancing the nozzle and choker to press the nipple plate in engagement with the mold wall and for then retracting said parts to free the nipple plate from contact with the mold wall.
5. In a machine of the character described, a mold having a gate opening in one wall thereof, a metal charging nozzle having a bore in line with the gate opening and inclined throat leading to said bore, a choker reciprocating in said bore, a nipple plate interposed between the nozzle and gate wall of the mold and provided with a port in line with the gate opening, and means for advancing the nozzle and choker to press the nipple plate in engagement with the mold wall and for then retracting said parts to free the nipple plate from contact with the mold wall, and to clear the port in the nipple plate from the jet of the cast-ing.
6. In a machine of the character described, a mold having a gate opening in one wall thereof, an adjustably mounted metal charging nozzle, and a universally adjustable nipple plate interposed between the nozzle and the gate wall of the mold.
7. In a machine of the character described,
a mold having a gate opening in one wall i thereof, a metal charging nozzle reciproeable toward and away from the gate wall, a nipple plate interposed between the end of Said nozzle and said gate wall, said nipple plate being yieldably supported to advance toward the gate Wall when engaged by the nozzle, a choker reciprocating in the nozzle, means for bodily adjusting the nozzle and choker with respect to the rmold, and actuating means for the nozzle and choker operative irrespective of the adjustments of said parts.
8. In a machine of the character described, a mold having a gate opening in one Wall thereof, a nozzle reciprocable toward and away from said gate opening, a choker reciprocating in said nozzle, means for bodily adjusting the nozzle and choker, and actuating means for the nozzle and choker operative irrespective of the adjustments thereof.
9. In a machine of the character described, a mold having a gate opening in one Wall thereof, a nozzle reciproc-able toward and away from said gate opening, a choker reciprocating in said nozzle, means for bodily adjusting the nozzle and choker, actuating means for the nozzle and choker operative irrespective of the adjustments thereof, a nipple plate interposed between the end of the nozzle and the gate wall of the mold, and
supporting means enablingadjustment of said nipple plate tothe nozzle and choker.
10. In a machine of the character described, a reciprocating metal charging Vnozzle provided with a metal passage, a choker reciprocating in said nozzle and controlling said passage, means for operating said nozzle and choker, and an adjustable support for the nozzle and choker, the operating means aforesaid being operative irrespective of the adjustments of said support.
11. In a machine of the character described, a moldl having a gate opening in one wall thereof, a metal charging nozzle, a nipple plate interposed between the end of said nozzle and the gate wall, studs loosely supporting the nipple plate in this position, and spring means for yieldingly holding the nipple plate engaged with the nozzle.
12. In a machine of the character described, a mold having a gate opening in one Wall thereof, a metal charging nozzle, a. nip- Aple plate interposed bet-Ween the end of said nozzle and the gate Wall, studs loosely supporting the nipple plate in this position, spring means for yieldingly holding thc nipple plate engaged With the nozzle, and adjustable stop means'limiting the motion of the nipple plate.
13. In a machine of the character described, in combination, a nozzle, a cooperating nipple plate, a choker sliding in t-he nozzle, and operating lneans for forcing the nozzle, choker and nipple plate toward the mold preliminary to casting and for retracting the lchoker during the casting operation and for advancing the choker when the cast is completed and for then retr'acting the nozzle, choker and nipple plate to disengage the nipple plate from contact with the mold surface.
14. In a machine of the character described, a mold, a nozzle having a metal passage, a choker sliding in the nozzle and controlling the metal passage, means for retracting the choker to open the metal passage during mold charging operations, and means for bodily adjusting the nozzle with respect to the mold.
