- BUILDING emit;
Application filed April. 25, 1922. Serial .Nof. 556,.491.
To all whom it may concern:-
Be it known that I, RICHARD MURRAY, a
citizen of the United States, and: residing at New York, flIl the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful'Improvements in Build- This invention relates .to building blocks, and particularly to blocks of this class composed of concrete and used in the construction of the walls of buildings and principally the outside walls of bulldings, and the object of the invention is to provide acombination .of blocks of this class. by
ing wall as well as the inner and outer faces of such wall maybe constructed by the use of my improved building blocks to .produce the strongest possible xwall and foundation construction at azminimum ex pense as well as to produce a wall' construc- 1 tion which will have the required features of constructions of this class; and with these 1 and other objects in view'the-inventionconsists in building blocks of the classiand for the purpose SPSCIfiGdLWhlCh are simple in construction; efficientjin'use and which are constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a part of a building wall with part of the construction broken away and in section;
Fig. 2 a perspective detail view of one of my improved blocks;
Fig. 3 a perspective detail view of another of the blocks which I employ;
Fig. 4 a perspective detail view of another form of block which I employ; and,
Fig. 5 a partial section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
In the practice of my invention and in the construction of a building wall, includ-' ing the foundation thereof, I employ three distinct forms of building blocks 10, 11 and 12 shown in perspective detail in Figs. 2, 3 and 4 of the drawing. The block is [oblong and rectangular in form and is of,
ably the bottom face {13..fof :the'jblock, is
formed a number of compartments 145, and
a thickness, approximately one-half, gthe depth; of the block; and in one face,prefer-,
three of. which are shown. and these'com- Q partrnents extend to within. 7 a .pr.edeter-' mined distance of the top face of theblock and, open outwardly throughfthe bottom face thereof, and this block is preferably used as a foundation formingblock and-in, Fig.1 of the drawing, I have shown a Humber of the blocks l0 mountedi one -'u'pon another and side by sidewith the compartments 14L directed downwardlyfas; shownat the lower left hanjd Icorner of'Fi'g. 1' of;
the drawing and, in-practice, cement,"conmeans of which the foundation of a buildcrete or the like is used,betweenlthe adjacent faces of the bloclrfllO, and thi's .,con-
I crete will extend upwardly a predetermined distance into the compartments H as, shown at 15in 1 ;of the drawing-to anchor and retain the blocks 10 1 in predetermined position. i f
The blocks .11 aIid LZareadapted to be used in. forming the wall construction f of a; building and aremounted upon'the founda tion blocks 10, as clearly .shown in Figl of the drawing. The blocksfll are oblong jand rectangular in formand are-provided with bores 16 extending" longitudinally therethrough and opening outwardly through both ends of the block, and said blocks are adapted to be mounted upon the foundation blocks 10 in the manner shown in Fig. 1 with the narrow side faces 17 off said blocks directed upwardly and downwardly and the wide faces 18 thereof di rected inwardly and outwardly, and these blocks are preferably mounted on theinner face of the building wall, the outer face of said wall being formed by the blocks 12.
The blocks 12 are of the same general form as the blocks 10 and 11 but are made hollow in form or provided with enclosed chambers 19, which are formed in the blocks by suitable core-pieces 20, which will form a permanent part of the blocks, and these core-pieces will be composed of inexpensive material and the blocks 12 will be mounted in the same manner as the mounting of the blocks 11 upon the foundation blocks 10 to 1 said blocks will be of considerably less weight than if made solid, and will also be strong and durable and will form pockets or chambers which will aid in keeping the Walls of a building in proper-condition, and
mountedjone upon another and side by side with the wide faces thereof directed up- Wardly and downwardly instead of the narrow faces thereof, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing,and various changes in and modifications of the construction and method of using the building'blocks herein shown and described may be made, within thescope' of I from the spirit of my invention or sacrificthe appended claims, without departing ing its advantages. II I I I Having fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to sec'ur'e by Letters Patent, isz- I 11A building wall and foundation construction of the class described comprising foundation blocks of predetermined form and having-chambers opening through one face thereof, said blocks being placed one upon another and side by side with the chambers thereofdirecte'd downwardly, and wall blocks mounted upon said foundation "blocks, and the wall blocks at the inner side of the wall having inter-communicating air spaces.
2. A building wall and foundation con struction of the class described comprising foundation blocks of predetermined form and having chambers opening through one face thereoflsaid blocks being placed one upon another and side by side with the ohambersthereof directed downwardly, and wall blocks mounted upon said foundation .b'locks, thewall blocks at the inner side of the wall having inter-commun1cat1ng air spaces, and the outer side being provided with dead air spaces.
3. A building wall and foundation construction of the class described comprising foundation and wall building blocks, said foundation blocks being oblong and rectangular in form and provided in one face thereof with chambers, said foundation; blocksvbeing adapted to be placed one upon another and side by side with the chambers thereof directed downwardly, one of said wall blocks formingone I face of the wall. construction being provided with dead air spaces. I
4:. A building wall and foundationcon v struction of the class described comprising foundation and wall building blocksjs'aid foundation blocks being oblong and rectangular in form and provided in one face thereof with chambers, said foundation blocks being adapted to be placed one upon another and side by side'w-ith the chambers thereof directed downwardly, one of said Well blocks forming one face of the wall construction I being provided 'withdead air spaces, and the other of saidwall blocks belng provided with inter-communicating bores.
'Intestimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name this v 22nd day of April, 1922. RICHARD MURRAY. I
