UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE,
AUSTIN P. SPEED, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN MUD-FENDER FOR EQUESTRIANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent 'No. 1 37,70 dated February 17, 1874; application filed January 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUSTIN P. SPEED, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mud-Fender for Equestrians, of which the following is a specification:
The figure is a perspective view of my improved fender, parts being broken away to show the construction.
My invention has for its object to furnish a simple and convenient device for protecting the boot-s and legs of those riding upon horseback from being spattered with mud. The invention consists in an improved mud-fender for equestrians formed of the steel frame, the leather cover, and the boot or pocket, constructed and applied to a stirrup and stirrupstrap, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents an ordinary stirrup, and B the stirrup-strap. O is a frame made of strips of thin or sheet steel, the side strips of which are straight and parallel with each other, and the end strips are curved to fit around the leg of the rider. One of the side strips of the frame 0 is secured to the stiirup strap B just above the stirrup A. The frame G is covered with leather D, and is designed to keep the said leather cover D in place. To the lower edge of the frame and cover 0 D is attached a pocket or boot, E, of such a size as to receive the foot of the rider, and within which the stirrup A hangs free. The boot E consists of a sole having an upwardly-projecting flange attached to it, except at one side, which is left open, and the upper edge of its closed side is attached to the covered frame 0 D.
The device thus constructed protects the feet and legs of those riding upon horseback from being spattered with mud, and at the same time allows the feet to be readily put into and removed from the stirrups.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-t An improved mud-fender for equestrians formed of the steel frame 0, the leather cover D, and the boot or pocket E, constructed and applied to a stirrup and stirrup-strap, substantially as herein shown and described.
