To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. REDRUP,
a citizen of ,the United States, and a resident oi: Huntington, in' the county of Huntington and State of Indiana, have'made an invention appertaining to a Collapsible Register; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the' art to which Vitappertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings and tov the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of thisspecitication.
This invention relates to registers of the type disclosed in U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,152,864 issued September' 7, 1915, to M. Triggs .andV adapted for use at the same time both as a hot air inlet and a cold air outlet fora room. Thev primary object of the invention is the provision of a collapsible register of the character described, which is capable of having its parts separated and compactly packed for shipment and iof being easily and quickly set up and assembled by the person to whom shipped, thereby effecting a material saving in freight rates. Other objects and advantages of the invention will be ap 30 parent from the' following detailed description thereof.
While the invention in its broader aspect is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,- j
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a register embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a bottom view thereof; Figs. 4 and 5 are central vertical, longitudinal and cross sectional views, re-. spec'tively, of the register. Fig. 6 is an e'nlarged section of the front side of the register taken on the line 6 6 in Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is an enlarged fragmentary section on the line 7+7 in 1, with the top member or cover plate of the register removed. Fig. 8 is an enlarged fragmentary section of the lower central rear side portion of the register showing the manner of securing the lower end of the hot air deflector to the rear side. Fig. 9 is a fragmentary rear elevation thereof. Fig. 10 is a fragmentary perspective view of one of the top channel strips of 'the front', or an end, oi?` the register.
Fig. 11 is an enlarged fragmentary inner side elevation thereotl with a grate bar secured thereto, and Fig. 12 is an enlarged inner side view of an end portion of a grate bar showing an opening therein for receiving a securing tongue.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the front, 2 the ends and 3 the back of a register embodying the invention, said parts being each of rectangular sheet metal construction, in the present instance, and detachably connected together at the corners.
The front 1 comprises a Z-base or foot strip 4, a top channel strip 5, end or corner upi'ights 6 of channel form, and intermediate channelled uprights 7, one of which is disposed adjacent to, but spaced from the respective corner upright 6. The space between each corner upright 6 and the adjacent intermediate upright 7 is completely closed by a panel 8; and the opening 9 between the upright 7, which Opening is the hot air Outlet opening of the register, is provided with a plurality of vertical grate bars 10 connected at bottom and top to the respective bottom and top strips 4 and 5. Each panel plate 8 has its side, top and bottom edges formed with inwardly turned ianges 11 so that the panel is substantially of pan form, and these inwardly turned edge flanges lit tightly within the adjacent side flanges of the uprights 6 and 7 and bottom and top strips 4 and 5. The inward movement of the panel is'limited by the side anges 11 coacting at their Jree edges with stop lianges 12 which are turned outward from the terminal edges of the adjacent sides of the uprights 6 and 7 as best shown in Fig. 6. The panels 8 are lretained in such assembled relation by the provision of bendable ears 13 on the top and bottom flanges thereof, which ears are bent around the adjacent side anges of the top and bottom strips 4 and 5.
. Each end 2 comprises a bottom Z-strip 2O and a top channel strip 21 of similar form to the respective bottom and top strips 4 and 5 or" the front, and these strips are connected at their rear ends by a rear cerner upright 22 of channel form. The opposite or front ends of the strips 2O and 21 lap the outer side of the adjacent front corner upright 6, and each is connected thereto by a bolt 23 or other releasable connecting means of suitable form. The strips 4 and 5 of the Jfront side and the'strips 2O and 21 of each end are notched or have their flanges eut away at their end portions so that the body, cross or flange connecting portions ott' the respective strips at the ends thereof alone lap'the corner uprights 6 and 22 and are secured thereto. The top and bottom strips of the front side are rigidly secured to the front corner uprights 6 preferably by spot welding so that such corner uprights are permanently attached thereto, and the top and bottom strips of Vthe ends are preferably secured in asimilar manner to the respective rear corner uprights22. The ends 2 are intended to be of open construction eX- cept for the provision oi. grate bars 24 therein, which bars are verticallyV disposed in transversely yspaced relation and are connected to the bottom and top strips 2O and 21 in the same manner that the bars 10 are connected to the front bottom and top strips. The terminal edge portionsof the sides of the corner uprights 6 and 22, to which the end strips20 and 21 are attached, are turned inward, asshown at 25 in Fig. 3, to prevent'sharp edges at the outer exposed sides of the ends 2 and to givethe end constructions a iinished appearance.
` It is preferable both for the purpose of ornamentation and for strength to secure a mould strip or shoe 26 to the outer side of the front and end bottom strips 4 and 20, as best shown in Figs. 4 and 5, such mould strips being secured to the base strips by screws 27, by spot welding, or in any other suitable manner. The front and end strips 26 are provided with a miter joint at the meeting corners.
The baelr 3 of the register comprises a plate of sheet metal or other suitable material, which is preferably impertorate and is eoeXtensive with the back area et the register. rIhe top edge et the baci-z plate 3 is provided with an inwardly or itorwardly turned flange 30, which is in substantially the plane of the upper edges ol rthe t ront and end top strips 5 and 21, and the lower edge of the back plate terminates flush with the bottom plate of the base shoe 26 and is finished to prevent a sharp edge by 'folding a portion back upon itself, as shown in Fig. 5. Each end of the haelt plate 3 is Vtermed with a hook flange 31 which extends throughout the depth of the plate and is doubled back upon the outer side of the hack plate in slightly spaced parallel relation thereto to adapt it to have hooked sliding engagement with a cooperating hooked or inwardly turned edge flange 32 provided on the rear or outer free edge of each rear corner upright 22, as best shown in Fig. 3. To facilitate such hooked interengagcment of the flanges 31 and 32 the rear sides of the uprights 22 are oi greater width than the inner sides of such uprights to adapt them to lap the adjacent inner end portions ot the back plate. The back plate 3 is slid into 0r out of engagement with the nprights 22 longitudinally thereof and from the bottom. It is thus evident that the sliding interloek ing ot the ends of the back plate with the uprights 22 causes the back plate to act as a means for tying the rear edge portions ot the ends 2 together.
The register is divided longitudinally in the present instance into a center hot air compartment 35 and opposite end cold air compartments 36 by intermediate cross partitions 37, which preferably comprise iinperforate sheet metal plates that extend vertically from the bottom to the top ot the register and crosswise from the rcspe-tive front intermediate uprights 7 to the haelt plate 3. The front edges of the cross pl atea 37 have hooked Sliding interengagement with the inner side flanges of the nprights 7, as shown at 38, such engagement being the same as the sliding interengagement of the ends ot the back plate 3 with the uprights 22. A similar interlocking sliding engagement is provided at 39 between the rear edges of the cross plates 37 and the itorwardlyT projecting flange of an L or angle strip 40 (ligs. 3, 4 and 5), one of which strips has one flange thereof [lat against the back plate and secured thereto by electric welding, riveting, or any other suitable manner tor each cross plate. The cross plates 37 lare slid intoproper position within the register and in interlocking engagement at their respective frent and rear edges with lll() llll the uprights 7 and angle l'strips 40 from the bottom of the register, the cross plates when in proper position abutting at their upper ends against the top flange of the front top strip 5 and the top flange 30 of the back plate 3. lt is evident that the front of the center or hot air compartment 35 is open at its front through the front opening 9, which V is provided with the grate bars l and is closed at its ends and back by the partition plates 37 and back plate 3, respectively. It isalso evident that each end or cold air compartment 36 is closed at front and back by the respective panel plate 8 and back plate 3 and at its inner side by the respective partition plate 37 and is open at its outer side through the end openings 41 (Fig. 2) of the register which openings are provided with the grate bars 24.
The register is intended to be placed over a floor register or opening providing` communication both with the hot air and cold air pipes of a furnace with the open bottom of the center compartment 35 of my register in communication with a hot air distributing portion of the floor register or opening and with the open bottom `of each end compartment 36 in register with a respective cold air portion of the floor register or opening'. lf only one cold air inlet is provided to the furnace, one of the end compartments 36 of the register may be eliminated.
In order that the hot air which enters the center compartment A36 of the register through the bottom thereof may be deflected forward through the front opening 9 a curved deflector plate 42 is provided within said compartment and extends from the lower rear edge upwardly and forwardly in curved form to the upper front edge of the compartment. The curve `of the deflector plate 42 terminates at its upper forward edge adjacent to the lower edge of the top front strip and the deflector then extends upward at the inner side ofthe top strip and terminates at its upper edge in forwardly projecting vflange 43, which enters the channel of said strip and bears upward against the top flange thereof, as shown in 5. rlhe lower rear edge portion of the deflector plate 42 bears against the baclr plate near its lower edge and is provided at .such point at its side edges with lbendable ears 44, which 'are projected rearwardly through registering openings 45 in the back iilate 3 8 and 9), and is then bent laterally 'against the outer side of the back plate to prevent withdrawal from the opening. In mounting and securing the deflector plate in the register it is inserted in the compartment from the vbottom thereof with its upper flange end 43 projected into the channel of the top front strips 5 and with its lower rear 'portion 'bearing against the back plate 3, with its ears 44 projecting through the registering openings 45 in such plate, after which the ears are bent over to prevent withdrawal from the openings.
A heat insulating member 46 of hollow rectangular sheet metal construction of a size corresponding to the top horizontal area of the compartment 35 is fitted in the upper part of such compartment over the curved portion of the defiector plate 42 between the upwardly extending top portion thereof and the back plate 3 at front and back, and between the upper ends of the partition )lates 37 at its sides or ends, as shown in ligs. 4 and 5. The member 46 is supported in suspended position within the upper end of the compartment 35 by flanges 47 at its ends, being bent to hook over the upper edges of the partition plates 37, as shown in Fig. 4. The insulating member is secured in assembled relation to the partition plates 37 by bendable hook fingers 48 projectingupward from the outer side portions of the plates 37 and being bent at their upper or free ends over the respective supporting flanges 47 of the insulating member.
A cover plate 49 is mounted over the entire top of the register and is provided entirely around its edge with a downwardly projecting flange 50, which is disposed without the upper edge of the register body so that the top portion of the cover 49 may rest freely on the top edge of the body. The cover 49 is held centered with respect to the register body by lugsl 5l projecting downward from the bottom or inner side thereof within the rear corner portions of the body frame in coaction with the rear plate 3 and top end strips 2l.
In setting up or assembling the parts of a register embodying my invention, the ends 2 are first secured to the corner uprights 6 of the front l by top and bottom bolts 23, after which the back plate 3 is slid into locking'engagement at its ends with the rear sides 'of the rear corner uprights 22 from the bottom of the register toward the top thereof. The partition plates 37 are then slid into interlocking engagement with the respective front uprights 7 and rear strips 40 through the bottom of the register, after which the def-lector plate 42 is inserted into the center compartment 35 through the bottom thereof with its upper flanged end 43 disposed within the channel of the upper front strip 5 in engagement with the top flange thereof. The ears44 adjacent to the lower rear end of the deflector plate are then inserted through the back openings 45 and bent laterally against the back to prevent withdrawal from the openings. This having been done the register is invertedso that the'top of the same is disposed uppermost, and the heat insulating member 46 is then placed in the upper lit edge ianges a7 in hooked engagement over Vthe top edges of the partition plates 37.
This having been done the register is inverted so that the top of the Vsame is disposed uppermost, and the heat insulating member t6 is then placed in the upper portion ofthe compartment with its end edge flanges i7 in hooked engagement over the top edges of the partition plates 37. This having been done the fingers 48 are bent over the top of the flanges I7 to retain them in engagement with the partition plates. The top or cover t9 is then placed over the top ofthe register and it is ready for use. While in the present instance the panel plates' 8 are removably secured within the openings provided therefor in the front side 1 of the register, they may, so far as a knocking-down of the register for shipment is concerned, be permanently secured to the front side.
It is evident that I have provided a simple, strong and durable register of the class described, which is capable of having the parts thereof easily and quickly separated for shipment in compact collapsed form and also of having such parts easily and quickly assembled in setup position by the person receiving the same, thus materially saving in space required for either storing or shipping of the registers, and also effecting a very Vmaterial saving in freight rates in connection-with the shipping of such registers.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts as it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms f5 without departing from the spirit of the claims. l
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
l. A register ofthe class described, having detachably Yconnected front, end and back members, partition members disposed within the register and Vdividing it into hot air outlet and cold air inlet compartments,
said partition members having detachable sliding interlocking engagement at their front and rear edges with the front and rear side members of the register, said compartments each having an open bottom and an open side, a cover member detachably mountwithin the register anddividing it into hot air outlet and cold air inlet compartments, said partition members having detachable sliding interlocking engagement at their front and rear edges with the front :1nd rear side members of the register, said compartments each having` an open bottom and an open side, n cover member detachably mounted over the top edges of all of said members andiclosing the tops of the compartments, a heat insulating member detachably n'iounted in the upper portion of the hot air outlet compartment below the cover member and a detlecting member detachably mounted in the hot air outlet compartment.
3. A register of the class described having detachably connected front.y end.` back and partition men'ibcrs cooperating t() form a register body having a hot air inlet compartment and a cold air outlet Compartment.. each having an opening in its bottom and an opening in a side thereof, a cover removably mounted. 0n the top of the register body and closingthe tops of said compartments, and a deflector member detachably mounted in the hot air outlet compartment and extending from the upper front edge portion of suoli compartment above the side opening thereof rearwardly and downwardly in curved form to the lower rear portion of the compartment.
4. A register of the class described having detachably connected front, end, back and partition members cooperating to form a register body having a hot air inlet compartment and a cold air outlet compartment, each having an opening in its bottom and an opening in a side thereof, a cover removably mounted on the top of the register body and closing the tops of said compartments, a deflector member detachably mounted in lthe hot air outlet compartment and extending from the upper front edge portion ofsuch compartment above the side opening thereof rearwardly and downwardly in curved form to the lower rear portion of the compartment, the detlector member having tongues projecting from its lower rear portion through the back member and bendable to coact with the back member to prevent withdrawal therefrom.
5. A register of the class described having a side with an opening therein and having longitudinally extending top and bottom frame strips, which strips have flanges projecting inward therefrom and provided with notches having tongues projecting from their bases, and grate bars extending across the opening, connecting the strips and mounted in the notches thereof, the tongues projecting through the bars and bent to prevent removal of the bars from the notches.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
