To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN F. AILBRICHT, a citizen of the United States residing at' Wollaston, in the county of 'orfolk and State of AMassachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Concrete Construction, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts. Y.
The invention to be hereinafter described relates to. concrete construction, and 1 more particularly to continuous flat slabs such as Patent No. 1,307,031, -granted'J une 17, 1919. The fiat slab of said patent comprises solid panels restin on columns and projecting Substantial distances beyond said columns with cantilever effect, 'the bays between the solid panels being provided with 'transversely extending /ribs depending therefrom with domes or recesses .between said ribs. To support the slab, columns of concrete are providedhaving flaring capitals beneath and supporting the solid panels.
This is agood, efficient form of construction for many purposes, but in some constructions it is desirable to eliminate the` Haring capitals of the columns, and it is desirable to use columns of smaller transverse section than where concrete columns are employed. yFor example, in oiice buildings Where a floor is divided into a number of rooms by partitions, it may be desirable to have the columns located within the parti-' will not be visible in the'rooms.
One ofthe purposes of the present invention, therefore, is to provide a metal column and a cap therefor appropriate to support a iat Slab of the type described above, in
which the metal cap may be enclosed within and concealed by the solid panel of the slab, but yet serve Vetliciently to support thev which. may be latera 1y presented to and'secured to the column at any desired point along the length thereof..
.With the aforesaid and other objiects in view, the character of the invention will be best understood byyreference to the followking description .of one good form thereof shown in the wherein;

Referring to the drawing, the concrete construction Shown therein as embodying the invention, comprises a flat slab 1 having solid panels 3 and bays 5 .between the Solid panels having series of transversely extending ribs 7 depending therefrom with domes or recesses 9 between said ribs distributed Athroughout the bays tothe margins of the solid panels. To reinforce the slab, any suitable system of reinforcing rods or members may' be employed. In the present instance, crossin series of rods or members 11 .are provide in the ribs 7 adj acentthe lower faces thereof, and crossing Series of tension reinforcing rods or members 13 may be provided in the solid panels adjacent the upper surface thereof. The system of reinforcing rods or accompanying drawing,
members may be similar to the system shown in my copending application Serial No. 314,347,` filed July `30, 1919, and therefore, further showing and description thereof herein are unnecessary.
As stated, in certain forms of construction it is desirable to provide columns and caps for supporting the solid panels without employing flaring capitals such as are shown in my patent referred to. These colfr umns and their caps may be similar in construction, and therefore, a description of one will suliicefor all. In'the present instance of the invention, a metal column 15 is shown, H-shaped in transverse section, -and having flanges 17 connected byva web 19. The c olumn may be enclosed in concrete 21,' whichi Amay lill the spaces between the web and flanges of the column and may be square or circular in transverse section as desired. In the present instance, the cap comprises a pair of opposed side sections 25 adapted to engage the outer faces of the fianges 17 of the column and a pair of opposed end sections 20 27 having inner portions adapted vto project in toward the web and into engagement with the inner faces ofthe flanges of the column. In the present exempliication of the invention, the base plate v23 is of 25 octagoal form, but obviously it may be of circular or other Aform as desired.

The brackets at the juncture of the base plate sections may be extendedinward along the inner faces of the flanges of the column otherwise secured thereto..
The angle bars 33 at the lower edges vof the brackets may be riveted or otherwise late, and the end angle bars 37 of the brac ets may be rivetedor otherwise secured to the column. To protect, render fireproof and `conceal the under face of the base plate, a layer of concrete 43 or other suitable material may be applied thereto.v The'base plate Vmay have a multiplicity of apertures 45 therein to contribute to the lightness thereof and to assist in holding the under concrete layer 43 thereof. lf a metal lathing is employed at the under face of the base plate, attaching vdevices therefor may be connected to the `base plate through said aperatures.

so that the perimeter thereof will extend a substantial distance beyond the column and furnish adequate support for the solid panel. 1 By the construction described, a strong and simple capis provided for thecolumn the sections of which may be readily formed and assembled with the column, and when the concrete is poured the cap will be enclosedl in the solid panel.` The term enclosed is to be understood in the claims as suiciently comprehensive. to cover a cap` lower faceof the 'plate protected 'by other suitable means.

What is claimed is f 1. In concrete construction, the combination with a metal column of H-shaped cross section and a cap for said column comprising a base platevhaving side sections the inner edges of which fit against the paneled rmembers of the column and end sections the inner edges of which enter between the parallel' members-bf the column for lateral presentation to the flanges and web of the column respectively, means for Securing said sections together, and brackets for securing said sections to the column.'
2. 1n concrete construction, the combina tion with a metal column, of a ca therefor tion with a column, of a cap formed in sec- 35 adapted for enclosurein a soli concrete panel and comprising-,a base lplate having a plurality of sections each of which is formed as a-lat plate adapted for lateral presentation to a portion of said column intermediate the ends thereof and separate brackets for connecting the plate sections to the column.
3. In concrete construction, the combination with a column, of a cap surrounding the column and formed in sections for lateral presentation to the column and attachable thereto intermediate the ends of the column, said cap comprising a base plate and brackets connected to the base plate and to the column. v
4. In concrete construction, the combination with a column, of a cap formed in sections for lateral presentation to the column and attachable tothe column intermediate its ends, said cap comprising a base plate and brackets connected to the column and havingstrengthening marginal flanges connected to the-base plate.
5. In concrete construction, the combination with a column, of a cap surrounding the column and attachable thereto intermediate its ends, said cap comprising a base plate, Webs disposed transversely to the base plate at spaced intervals, means to secure the Webs to the column, and means to secure the webs t0 the base plate.
6. In concrete construction, the combinations' for lateral presentation to the column and attachable to the column intermediate it ends, said cap com rising a base plate yand brackets.u connecte to the column and to the base plate, and under brackets secured to said base plate and column.
7. In concrete construction, the combination with a column, ofra cap surrounding the column and formed in sections for lateral presentation to the column and attachable thereto intermediate the ends of the column, said cap provided with a base plate vhaving apertures therein to facilitate holding a layer of concrete or other surface material to the under side of the base plate and brackets connecting the ybase plate and column.
8. In concrete construction, the combination with a column of suicient length to roject from one floor throu h another oor, a cap for supporting a so id concrete panel of a recessed floor comprising sections adapted for llateral presentation toa portion of the column intermediate the ends thereof, said sections projecting a substantial distance from the column to furnish extended support `for the solid panel, and triangular brackets secured to the sections and to the columnl intermediate the ends of thecolumn.
