and resi in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Nindow Shades andv Awnings, of which the following is a specification, such as. will enable those skilled in the art to which it apper tains to make and use the same.

This inventionrelates to window shades and awnings, and the'object thereof is to provide a window shade construction whereby the shade may be used not only for the usual purposes but for an awning; and with this and other objects in viewthe invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, vention is reduced to tive form. v

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of an ordinary window construction provided with my improvement and showing a shade used as an awning;

In the drawing forming part of this specificatioml have shown a window frame comprising top and bottom members 0. and a and side members a and mounted in said frame are the usual top and bottom sashes b and b and it will be understood that these sashes may be counter-bdanced in the usual manner and raised or lowered into any desired position.

In the practice of my invention 1 provide an ordinary shade roller 0 on which the usual shade c is wound, and saidshade is narrower than the inner transverse dimensions of the window frame to permit said shade to be swung inwardly and outwardly, or used on the inner side of said frame or on the outer side thereof as may be desired.

The awning arms 6 are provided at their inner endswith hooks 0 adapted to engage the eye bolts (Z, (Z and d and at their outer ends said arms are provided with eye de vices 6* adapted toengage the hooks c at the free end of the shade.

The operation or use of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following statement.

The shade 0 may be supported by or suspended from the roller 0 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 in which position it will serve as an ordinary shade, and when it is desired to use said shade an awning as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the upper sash b is lowered and the shade passed outwardly thereover through the space above said sash as shown at 7 and at this time the awning arms 0 are brought into use, and one end thereof connected with the eye bolts or other devices (Z while the other ends thereof are connected with the opposite ends of the .rod 0 in the free 'end of the shade as shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2.

The awning arms any desired length inwardly toward or outwardly from, the window frame as may be desired awning arms may be adjusted to such length that the free ends thereof will swingto or into the top of the window'frame, or downwardly and inwardly to the bottom of the window frame, and said awning arms may be connected with the eye'bolts or other devices d and d as will be readily understood, and in this way the position and operation of the shade as an awning may be adjusted and regulated to any desired extent.

1' also provide a stay cert adapted to be connected with the free end of the window shade c centrally thereof as shown at g and which isalso adapted to be connected with the central bottom portion of the window sill as shown at g, and this will hold the shade when used as an awning in proper position at all times prevent its being swung about, or moved upwardly and downwardly by the wind.

By means of the construction herein ,described it will be seenthat I provide a simale and effective means whereb an ordinar v y window shade may be usedat any time for the purpose for whiohit is intendedand also used when so clesii ed as a Simple ,and eflicient window awning, and although I have shown one form of construction for carrying my invention into effect or for reducing itto practical form, it must be understood that the said invention is not limited to the details ofconstruetion herein shown and described, and changes therein and modifi ations thereof may ,be made within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from thespirit ofmy invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention. what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1.
