To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, HJALMAR Swanson, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State 6 of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand Perforators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hand perforators, and has for its general object to provide a simply constructed though highly eiiicient device of this chaarcter, which may be carried around on the person of the operator, and which embodies, among other features, provision for punching changeable-data 16 preferably in combination with the punching of non-changeable-data. By the invention, a salesman, for example, or other op erator, may punch on successive slips of paper, such as sales tickets, different data,
10 as successive numbers indicating successive sales, combined with the punching of fixed data on each sales ticket, the fixed data indicatincr the particular salesman making the sale. When utilized in the manner above set forth, the invention provides perforating equipment that is especially suitable for large sales organizations such as department stores, in that the use of the improved hand perforator will furnish a practically 80 unalterable record of the sales made by each individual salesman.
In addition to the general objects recited above, the invention has for further objects such other improvements and advantages in construction and operation as may be found to obtain in the structures and devices here inafter described or claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification and showing, for purposes of exemplification, a preferred form and manner in which the invention may be embodied and practiced, but without limiting the claimed invention specifically to such illustrative instance or instances:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a hand perforator constructed in accordance with the improvements of the present invention;

The same characters of reference indicate the same parts in each of the several views of the drawings. i
In the illustrated embodiment of the inventlon, the hand perforator is especiallv des1gned for being used in the manner above specified and, for convenience, the present description will be confined to this use of the invention. Features of construction of the hand perforator are, however, capable of other applications; hence, the scope of the invention is not confined to the specific use and specific embodiment herein described as an illustrative example.
Referring to the drawings: The hand perforator embodies in its construction a pair of movable jaw members 11 and 121es pectively provided, at one end, with handle grips l3 and 14;, and pivoted together, at the opposite end at 15. A spring 16, the opposite ends of which seat in sockets l7 and 18 provided in the members 11 and 12 maintains said members normally apart from each other, a position in which the punches are retracted from the dies. The sheet or sheets of paper to be punched are nserted in an open ended slot 19, extendmg longitudinally in the jaw member 12. Seated in said member 12 at the bottom of the slot 19 is the die plate 20, the dies of which communicate with an opening 21 be low the die plate for discharge of the punched particles of paper.
In the present instance, the die plate 20 is rovided with two series of dies A. and B, the former cooperating with a series'of punches for perforating the fixeddata and the latter co-operating with a series of punches for perforating the changeable-data.

The changeable-data dies are also sub-divided into two groups I) and h, each group cooperating with a corresponding group of the changeable-data punches to perforate a char acter.
The punches 22 are divided into two series A and B and the series A, B are respectively sub-divided into groups of punches a and a and b and b the groups a and a (to-operating respectively with the groups of dies at and a and the groups 5 and b co-operating respectively with the groups of dies Z2 and b, in-the manner above stated. Both series of punches A and B extend into a chamber 23 provided in the jaw member 12, and the lower ends of said punches, when in advanced position with respect to their corresponding dies extend throu h the perforate guide plate 24 located below the chamber 23 and forming the top of the paper-receiving slot 19. When in the retracted position, the upper ends of the punches extend through a top guide plate 25, which forms the top of the chamber 23. The punches 22 are further guided in their advancing or retracting movement, by a soft metal filling 26 located above the lower guide plate 24.
The punches A of the fixed-data series are operated by a fixed or non-adjustable matrix 2 7, which preferably consists of plate fixed to" the lower face 28 of the jaw member 11 and movable to advance the fixed-data punches A into their corresponding dies A, during the operation of squeezing together the handle grips 13 and 14L of the two jaw members 11 and 12. In the form shown the matrix 27 is reversely socketed for each group of punches a and a so that it will not operate those punches of the groups which are not required for perforating the particular characters desired. During the operative movement of the matrix 27, the punches not required pass idly through the reverse sockets in the fixed matrix and only those punches which are required for punching the characters desired are engaged by the face of the matrix and acvanced into co-operation with their spective dies.
The changeable-data punches B are operated by adjustable or revoluble matrices 9,, there being one matrix for each group b and of said punches B. The adjustable matrices 29 are preferably constituted of rings which revolve upon a fixed arbor 30 secured in the bifurcated portion of the jaw member 11. Each matrix ring'29 is preferably provided with a series of matrix faces 31, preferably ten in number, one for each of the'nine digits and one for zero, the matrix faces 3lbeing also reversely soolc cted, so that they will not operate those ring. When the positioning members 32 are seated within sockets 3& of their respective matrix rings, a matrix face 31 of each ring is in proper position for operating its corresponding group of changeable-data punches.
Pivotally secured to the opposite side faces of the jaw member 11 are spring arms 35, respectively provided with lugs 36 and with finger knobs 37. As snown in Figs. 2 and 8, slots 38 are provided in the opposite side walls of the member 11, said slots exposing seriatum two adjacent sockets of a. series of ten sockets 39 provided respectively in the opposite outside faces of the matrix rings 29. With this construction, the spring arm 35 corresponding to either matrix rings 29 may be operated to insert the lug S6,, in one or the other of the exposed sockets 39 and, by a short pivotal movement of the arm 35 the matrix ring may be moved in either direction to move one matrix face out of operative position and to position another for a succeeding operation of the perforator. Preferably each slot 38 is. dimensioned to restrict the movement of the arm 35 to a degree just sufficient to substitute an adjacent matrix face for a matrix face previously operated. However, in any event the spring pressed positioning members '32 will operate to prevent overthrow, during the operation of changing a matrix face.
The positioned matrix faces 31 of the rings 29 are advanced to push forward the selected punches of the two groups 6 and of the series B, when the handles 13' and 14: of the jaw members 11 and 12 are squeezed together, the punching operation effected by the adjustable matrix taking place concurrently with the punching operation effected by the fixed matrix face 27. is the positioned matrix faces 31 advance the selected punches into their corresponding dies, those'punches of thegroups b and b which are not required to effect the perforation of the particular character remain stationary, the reverse sockets in the positioned matrix faces 31 moving to position the upper ends of the inoperative punches in said sockets, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
When pressure is released from the handles 13 and 1d of the jaw members 11 and 12 the spring 16 restores said jaw members to their retracted position. The movement of the members'll and 12 to such retracted position is accompanied by a concurrent restoration of the previously operated punches of both series A and B to their. normal position. F or this purpose, each punch 22 is provided with a fixed collar 40, adapted to be engaged by the upper face of a perforate plate 4C1 through which the several punches 22 extend. The plate 41 is supported by side members 42 carried by the jaw member 11, and as the latter moves away from the other jaw' member 12 the upper face of the plate engages the collars 4:1 of the several previously operated punches and restores them to their normal retracted position.
The invention as hereinaboveset forth is embodied in a particular form of construction but may be variously embodied within the scope of the claims hereinafter made.
I claim:
1. In a hand perforator, in combination:-
fixed matrix and a matrix face of said revo-' luble member being operated to effect the concurrent operation of both series of punches, during the movement of said jaw members toward each other;, a pin for enga ement with said revoluble matrix member for positioning said matrix faces; and means for yieldably maintaining said pin in operativeposition; substantially as specified.
2. In a hand perforator, a pair of manually-operable members pivotally connected together for operative movement toward each other combined with dies carried by one of said members, a plurality of selectively operable punches adapted to co-operate with said dies, selective matrix means carried by the other member for operating said punches during the manual operation of said members; and a handle pivotally mounted on one of said members for imparting a stepped movement to said matrix means; substantially as specified.
3. In a hand perforator, in combination: a pair of manually-operable members pivotally connected together; dies carried by one of said members; a series of punches respectively co-operable with said dies, an adjustable matrix element carried by the other member and provided with a plurality of matrix faces each of which may operate said punches; a matrix face of said adjustable matrix element being operated to effect the operation of said punches, during manual movement of said members toward each other; a manually-controlled arm pivotally mounted on said other member for adjusting said matrix elements to change the positions of said matrix faces; and means for moving said manually-operable members to retract the previously operated punches from their dies, substantially as specified.
4. In a hand perforator, in combination: a pair of manually-operable members pivotally connected together; dies carried by one of said members; a series of punches respectively co-operable with said dies, an adjustable matrix element carried by the other member and provided with a plurality of matrix faces each of which may operate said punches; a matrix face of said adjustable member being operated to eflect the operation of said punches, during manual movement of said members toward each other; manuallycontrolled means pivotally mounted on said other member for adjusting said matrix members to change the positions of said matrix faces; and means for moving said manually-operable members to retract the previously operated punches from their dies; substantially as specified.
5. In a hand perforator, in combination: a pair of manually-operable members pivotally connected together; dies carried by one of said members; a series of punches respectively co-operable with said dies; an adjustable matrix element carried by the other member and provided with a plurality of matrix faces each of which may operate said punches; a matrix face of said adjustable element being operated to effect the operation of said punches, during manual movement of said members toward each other; means for moving said manuallyoperable members to retract the previously operated punches from their dies; and means pivoted to said other member and engageable with said adjustable matrix element for positionin said matrix faces; substantially as specified.
6. In a hand perforator, in combination: a pair of manually-operable members pivotally connected together; dies carried by one of said members; a series of punches respectively co-operable with said dies; an adjustable matrix element carried bythe other member, and provided with a plurality of matrix faces a matrix face of said adjustable element being operated to effect the operation of said punches, during manual movement of said members toward each other; and means carried by said other memher and engageable with said adjustable matrix element for positioning said matrix faces; substantially as specified.
